Wildfires spark burn bans

Firefighters from all over the area, including Jesup and Wayne County, work full-time to contain a 5,000-acre fire in Brantley County. Both the city of Jesup and Wayne County have enacted burn bans, and the Georgia Forestry Commission banned all burning in South Georgia Wednesday.

Property tax assessment notices will go out later than usual this year, according to Wayne County Chief Appraiser Kimberly Wilson.The notices normally go out in May.

Hospital pays off 20-year building bond

Final payment on the 20-year bond for the Wayne Memorial Hospital facility was made March 1, chief financial officer Greg Jones reported to the Hospital Authority in the March 20 meeting. The facility was built in 2007, replacing the original building, and the bond was issued May 2, 2006.

Altamaha Center approved for $3 million grant

A “Conserve Georgia” grant of nearly $3 million to develop the Altamaha Conservation Center at Jaycee Landing was approved for the final level of the grant application process, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced last week.

Jesup man arrested in shooting on Bamboo St.

A man accused of shooting into a house in Jesup and firing shots in the direction of officers who responded to calls about the shooting was arrested at the scene Sunday. Joshua Adam Crews, 31, was arrested after a brief struggle, Jesup Police Chief Chris Hamilton reported Monday.
