Wayne, Liberty renew rivalry in season opener

It’s been several years since the Wayne County High Yellow Jackets and Liberty County High Panthers last faced off on the gridiron. The two teams will renew the rivalry Friday at Jaycee Stadium, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.

Lady Jackets edge Coffee High, fall to South Effingham High

The Wayne County High Lady Jackets varsity softball team split a pair of games late last week, edging Coffee County High 4-3 before falling to South Effingham High 9-6.
There will be a home scrimmage game against Pierce County High on Aug 14 at 7 p.m.

The Wayne County High School football season is almost here, and the Wayne County Touchdown Club will kick it off with a banquet tonight (Thursday) at 6:30 p.m. in the commons area at Wayne County High.The public is invited, and tickets are $15.

Loaded Lady Jackets open season with championship expectations

With seven seniors returning, the Wayne County High Lady Jackets enter the 2026 softball season with high expectations after capturing last year’s Region 1-4A championship and finishing fourth in the Georgia High School Association Class 4A state tournament.

Struckhoff, 1976 women’s team inducted into Berry Hall of Fame

Wayne County’s Barbara Struckhoff, alongside the rest of the 1976 Berry College women’s basketball team, was recently inducted into the Berry College Athletics Hall of Fame. The team is part of the inaugural Hall of Fame class and is the first national championship team to receive the honor.

The Wayne County Recreation Department held the District 2 tennis tournament this past week at Wayne County High. Four are advancing to the Georgia Recreation and Park Association state tournament this week in Hazlehurst. Results were not available by press time.

Wayne County swimmers heading to GRPA state meet

The Wayne County Recreation Department’s swim team has 32 swimmers heading to the Georgia Recreation and Park Association state championships this weekend in Moultrie. Those swimmers earned berths in 46 individual events, while 16 relay teams also advanced to state competition.

Wayne Countian Gunner Long recently committed to play tennis at Covenant College.Covenant is a private Christian college, and its athletic programs compete in NCAA Division III and the Collegiate Conference of the South.

Jesup’s Antonio Juarbe named NAIA All-American

College of Coastal Georgia junior Antonio Juarbe has been named a first-team All-American by the NAIA. Juarbe, a native of Jesup, is one of just 15 student-athletes across the country to earn first-team recognition for the 2025-26 men’s golf season.
