Sylvia Tyre Harvey
Odum—Sylvia Tyre Harvey, 78, of Odum died Sept. 6, 2022.
The Wayne County native was a member of Jehovah’s Witness of Jesup. She was a retired Kmart manager and loved to garden in her spare time, maintaining a pristine yard.
She was preceded in death by her son, Mark Todd; her parents, Lloyd and Louise Tyre; and a sister, Verona Lee Cleland.
Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Charles “Mann” Harvey of Odum; daughter, Donna Todd of Jacksonville, Florida; son, Robbie Todd of Jesup; two brothers, Edwin Tyre and Phillip (Rhonda) Tyre, both of Screven; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; extended family and their children, Leisha (David) Martin, Michael (Terri) Harvey, Randy Harvey and Joey Harvey; and grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sept. 9 at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with Carroll Emerson officiating. Private family burial followed in Screven City Cemetery. Active pallbearers were her grandsons.
Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Hazel Bryant King
Jesup—Hazel Bryant King, 88, died at home on Sept. 9, 2022, under the care of her family and Hospice of South Georgia Inc. after an extended illness.
The Pierce County native had been a resident of Wayne County for the past 64 years. She was a homemaker until her children were older. She then worked alongside her husband in his Ford tractor dealership until their retirement in 1988. Before her illness, she enjoyed reading, traveling, going out to eat and being with her family and friends.
She was a longtime member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and was “the most kind-hearted, loving mother and Nanny ever,” her family said.
She was preceded in death by her father Ernest Carroll Bryant (who died when she was an infant); her mother, Aletha Lee Bryant Thomas; her stepfather, Elmer Thomas; her husband, C.L. King; her beloved children, Deborah Kay and Carroll L. King; a brother, Tracy Bryant; a half-sister, Wannell Thomas English; and an infant half-brother, Gordon Thomas.
Survivors include her two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Freddy Swenson and Ann and Dwight Bishop of Jesup; a daughter-in-law, Jackie King of Jesup; grandchildren and their spouses, Robert and Torrie Swenson, Chris and Jenny Swenson, Jeff and Caroline Bishop, Russell Bishop, Debbie King and Ashlee Smith; great-grandchildren, Dylan (Hailey) Swenson, Brianna Swenson, Katy Bishop, Hailey Bishop, Gianna Swenson and Woody Swenson; a step-great-grandson, Christopher Smith; two great-great-granddaughters, Ila Swenson and Raelyn F. Smith; a brother and sister-in-law, Lamar and Oletha Bryant of Patterson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.
Funeral services were held Sept. 12 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup with the Rev. Stanley Todd officiating.
Interment followed in Ramah Cemetery in Mershon.
Active pallbearers were Robert and Chris Swenson, Jeff and Russell Bishop, Dylan Swenson and Francisco Gomez. Honorary pallbearers were Sandra Gomez, Terry Bryant, David and Valerie Daniels and the staff of Hospice of South Georgia.

The family added that she will be deeply missed by her family and all who knew and loved her. “We do find comfort in knowing that she is finally at peace and has been reunited with her loved ones. We want to say a special thank-you to her devoted caregiver and friend, Sandra Gomez, for all of her assistance to us with her care the past four years. We couldn’t have done it without her,” the family said.

Charles Lamar “Sonny” Coe
San Mateo, Florida—Charles Lamar “Sonny” Coe, 89, died on Aug. 6, 2022.
He was born on Nov. 29, 1932 in Odum to Carlos Coe and Carrie Lane Coe.
His father was killed in a logging accident when he was just 3 years old, leaving his mom and two sisters—Addis and Laverne. His mother remarried to James (Mel) Reddish, who was a great provider and new father for the family. Before long, the new family had a new addition, James William Reddish.
He grew up near Jesup, working on the family farm, in timber and the family café. He learned to play the guitar when he was 14 and became a very accomplished musician.
After graduating from Jesup High School, he joined the Air Force, serving as a tail gunner in a B-29 in the Korean War. His crew successfully completed 25 missions before returning stateside. After completing his service with the Air Force, he returned to Jesup and met his first wife, Marian Strickland. They were married for 48 years before she passed in 2004. The couple had three children and their spouses (Carolyn (Nita) (David), Carlos (Trisha) and Charlotte (Chris); six grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Fortunately, he found the second love of his life, Helen Coe, to whom he was married for 17 years, until his passing. Their extended family included Gary (Renee), Terri (Don), and Alan (Robin) along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren.
He worked for more than 40 years in the construction industry primarily as a construction superintendent. His projects spanned over the entire Southeast region, including the King and Prince Hotel on St. Simons Island, as well as numerous Holiday Inns.
His family said he will always be remembered as a great husband and father, a true Southern gentlemen, and a gifted guitarist.
A memorial service will be held at San Mateo Presbyterian Church in San Mateo, Florida, on Sept. 30 at 11 a.m., followed by lunch in the fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to San Mateo Presbyterian Church.
Charles Edward Christian
Raleigh, North Carolina—Charles Edward Christian, 79, a former Jesup resident, died July 30, 2022, while visiting his second home in Panama, leaving his family and friends to mourn.
He was predeceased by his father, Wirt Ziney Christian; his mother, Hazel Christian Odum; and his stepfather, Robert Cecil Odum of Jesup.
Survivors include his wife, Irma Christian of Raleigh, North Carolina; a former wife, Shirley Christian of Jesup; children, David Charles Christian (Shannon Hammons Christian) of Folkston, and Deborah Christian Link of Atlanta; sisters, Carolyn Christian (Robert) Pully of Hope Mills, North Carolina, and Patsy Christian (Buck Woods) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; a brother, Larry (Phyllis) Christian of Jesup; grandchildren, David Ryan (Heather) Christian of Jesup, Samantha Hammons of Cookeville, Tennessee, Nick Knippenberg of Yulee, Florida, Allison Hammons of Dalton, Hailee Christian, Meagan Christian and Zane Christian, all of Folkston, Noelle Link of New York and Lauren Link of Nashville, Tennessee; great-grandchildren, Aiden and Mason Christian; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration-of-life service will be held Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. at the Church of God in Jesup, 444 Sunset Blvd.
