Jesup—Ignacio de Jesus Palacio, 64, of Jesup died at home under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

He was born in Havana, Cuba, to Ricardo and Fausta Palacio in 1957. His family moved to the United States in 1960 and lived in Florida, Ohio and Virginia. He met Debbie, his future wife, at Ohio State University, and they were married in 1989. After the honeymoon, he began the Officer Basic Course in the U.S. Army at Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma. He was stationed at Fort Stewart and then deployed during Operation Desert Shield. After the military, he began a law-enforcement career at FCI in Jesup and held several positions during his 21 years of service. At retirement, his title was drug treatment specialist counselor.

He enjoyed classical guitar, painting, woodworking, gardening and archery and devoted 20 years to the sport of archery. Enjoyment came by helping the children and adults succeed to the best of their abilities while having fun, his family said. He was an active member of First Baptist Church, where he played guitar, taught the Singles Sunday school class and served as a deacon. His favorite scripture was Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ, it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me, and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” This is the reason he was committed to serving others, his family said. He wanted everyone to understand “Jesus Christ in you, the hope of Glory.” Among his titles, his favorite was “Daddy”. He loved spending time with his three boys camping, fishing, playing games or “hanging together.” There was always laughter and love present, according to his family, who said that his handsome smile, warmth and tenderness live on in his three sons.

Survivors are his wife of 33 years, Debbie Palacio of Jesup; three sons, Andrew Palacio of Jesup and William Palacio and Anthony (Allyse) Palacio, both of Statesboro; and a brother, Gabriel (Evelyn) Palacio of Miami, Florida.
