Jacquelyn “Jackie” Louise Parks Dekle

Jesup—Jacquelyn “Jackie” Louise Parks Dekle, 82, of Jesup died Sept. 24, 2021.

The Wayne County native was a member of First United Methodist Church and a retired teacher’s aide. She was an avid and active member of the Joy Sunday School Class, UDC, DAR, Circle No. 4, Wayne County Historical Society and Jesup High School Class of 1957.

Her leisure time was spent participating in the many committees she was a member of and loving her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends and  three cats.

Her husband of 63 years, Thomas Ervin Dekle Jr., preceded her in death a few days before she passed.

Survivors include three daughters, Kathy (Cliff) Harden of Canton, Connie (Danny) Millard of Newnan and Angie (Charlie) Parker of Shellman Bluff; five grandchildren, Camille Nichols, Jay Harden, Brooke Vinson, and Parks and Dayton Millard; eight great-grandchildren; and extended relatives.

Graveside funeral services were held Sept. 27 in Jesup City Cemetery with the Rev. Rebecca Duke-Barton officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jesup First United Methodist Church, 205 E. Cherry Street, Jesup, GA 31546.

Joanne Halligan Joyner

Jesup—Joanne Halligan Joyner, 75, of Jesup died Sept. 22, 2021.

The Appling County native had lived in Wayne County for most of her life and was a founding member of Unity Church of God and active in all aspects of her church, including chairman of the “Food Pantry.” Her love for people and helping them to appreciate themselves awarded her to become director of sales for Mary Kay Industries, thus earning many awards and automobiles.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leroy Halligan and Grace Bullard, and a brother, James Everett Halligan.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Van Joyner of Jesup; a daughter, Angie (David) Fitzgerald of Brunswick; a son, Tim (Kimberly) Joyner of Savannah; two sisters, Bobbie Jean Gill of Pinckney, Michigan, and Connie (Phil) Fletcher of Brunswick; two brothers, Larry (Ranee) Bullard of Perry and Ronnie (Lucy) Bullard of Bullhead, Arizona; five grandchildren, Dustin (Erica) Cathey, Alex (Morgan) Doke, Brannen Joyner, Lexie Doke and Faith Joyner; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Celebration-of-life services were held Sept. 25 at Unity Church of God with Pastor Calvin Anderson and Evangelist George Moxley officiating. Interment followed in Sunset Oaks Cemetery adjacent to the church. Active pallbearers were family.

Memorials are requested to Unity Church of God Food Pantry, 1580 Sunset Blvd, Jesup.

Lynda Garlow Burrage

Jesup—Lynda Garlow Burrage, 73, of Jesup died Sept. 18, 2021.

The New York native had lived in Wayne County most of her life and was of the Baptist faith. She was a licensed practical nurse at Wayne Memorial Hospital and loved to fish, garden and barter as a “Yard Sale Maniac” in local venues.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jennifer Marie Burrage; her parents, Jesse and Minnie Garlow; and a brother, Lloyd Brown.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Vick Burrage of Jesup; three sons, Jesse, James (Penny) and Crane Burrage; two grandchildren, Ainsley and Caleb; a sister, Martha Banks; and a brother, Russell (Janice) Garlow.

Memorial services will be held later.

Vernon Spradley

Jesup—Vernon Spradley, 90, of Jesup died Sept. 22, 2021.

A resident of Manningtown for his entire life, he was born on Sept. 13, 1931. He was a longtime member of Manningtown Presbyterian Church and worked for L.R. Manning Pulp Wood Company in Brunswick and Pulp Land Company and Waynline.

In his free time, he was always hunting, fishing and farming. His smiling face never met a stranger, his family said, and he was always willing to lend a helping hand. Because of his love and dedication to his community, Stetson Bennett Jr. coined him with the title “Mayor of Manningtown.” Mr. Spradley called Mr. Bennett “Chief.”

However, his family was first and foremost in his life, and he cherished the time he spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be forever remembered mostly for “living life to the fullest.” His departing words were always, “I love you in the Lord.”

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50-plus years, Virginia Manning Spradley; his parents, Hurbert and Anniebelle Spradley; his sisters, Lucille Manning, Fannie Clark and Edis Romero; his sons, Wyman Spradley and Joseph “Bo” Spradley; and a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Ted Teringer.

Survivors include his sons, Orman (Deborah) Spradley and Jeremiah (Sharon) Spradley; a daughter-in-law, Debbra Spradley; grandchildren, Chasity (Joel) Secora, Windy (Bob) Zipf, Wendall Spradley, Teddy Teringer, Joey (Miranda) Spradley, Shannon Spradley, Creighton Teringer, Wyman (Courtney) Spradley, Elizabeth (Brandon) Bennett, Madison (Lee) Brant and Randa Spradley; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sept. 25 at Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne “Rooster” Manning Jr., the Rev. Joe Manning and the Rev. Tim Fulmer officiating. Interment followed in Manningtown Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Wendall, Wyman and Shannon Spradley, Joel Secora, Creighton and Teddy Teringer, Brandon Bennett and Lee Brant.

Timmy Arvin Nordberg

Jesup—Timmy Arvin Nordberg, 56, of Jesup  died Sept. 19, 2021.

The Wayne County native was an automotive mechanic and enjoyed fishing and the Altamaha River life.

He was predeceased by his father, James Arvin Nordberg, and a brother, James Robert Nordberg.

Survivors include his mother, Minnie Jo Morris Nordberg of Jesup; a sister, Barbara Landon of Jesup; several nieces, Sandy (Andy) Landon, Julie (Justin) Purcell and Rebecca (Travis) Brantley, all of Jesup; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Graveside celebration- of-life services will be held Sept. 24 in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Devin Mixon officiating. Active pallbearers were Mike Woods, Tyler Grantham, Andy Jones, Terry, Gene and Wayne Morris.

Joey Spradley

Jesup—Joey Spradley, 42, of Jesup died Sept. 25, 2021.

The Wayne County native attended Crossroads Church of God and was a truck driver with G&S Griffis Farms. The family man was his wife’s best friend and loved to dote on his children.  In his spare time, he enjoyed “flipping boats” by buying, repairing and selling them.  Fishing was also a favorite pastime.

His father, Joseph “Bo” Spradley, preceded him in death, along with his grandparents, Vernon and Virginia Spradley, and several aunts and uncles.

Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Miranda Spradley of Jesup; two daughters, Belle and Abbi Spradley of Jesup; a son, Beau Spradley of Jesup; his mother, Cheryl (Jack) Ashley of Jesup; a brother, Shannon Spradley of Jesup; grandparents, Carlton “Bud” Carter and Laverne (Jack) Williams; two uncles, Jeremiah (Sharon) Spradley of Jesup and Orman (Deborah) Spradley of Jesup; six nieces, Bailee and Emma Spradley, McKenzie Knight, Bryleigh Crosby, Callie Brown and Gracie Winder; four nephews, Carter Spradley, Keegan (Kristin) Varnedoe, and Will and Dylan Rich; a father-in-law and mother-in-law, Berry (Carol) Crosby of Vidalia; two sisters-in-law, Cindy (Tommy) Knight of Brunswick and Michelle (Jerry) Rich of Vidalia; and a brother-in-law, Micah (Samantha) Crosby of Summerville.

Funeral services were held Sept. 29 at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with Pastor Brandon Stone and the Rev. Wayne “Rooster” Manning Jr. officiating. Interment followed in the Manningtown Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Wendall and Wyman Spradley, Lee Brant, Joel Secora, Brandon Bennett, Bob Zipf, Ryan Kagee, David McKinzie, Kevin Spell, Teddy and Creighton Teringer. Honorary pallbearers were Steven Griffis and the drivers of G&S Griffis Farms.

Melissa “Missie” Jackson

Screven—Melissa “Missie” Jackson, 54, of Screven died Sept. 25, 2021.

The Wayne County native was a member of Ephesus Church of God and a homemaker. She loved to decorate her house for each season. The family-oriented wife, mother and grandmother would cater to everyone, especially her extended family, and make sure that pictures recorded the memories.

She was preceded in death by her father, Aubrey Wiggins, and her grandparents, Kathleen (Wid) Delk and Vera Smith.

Survivors include her husband of 37 years, Phil Jackson of Screven; four daughters, Deanna (Len Crews) Johnson of Jesup, Brittany (Brandon) Smith of Screven, Felicia (Tom) Valenteen of Yulee, Florida, and Bridgette (Chip Craven) Jackson of Odum; her mother, Janice Hodges of Jesup; five grandchildren, Hagen, Logan, Paisley, Alaina and Kohen; three sisters, Charlotte (Carey) Carter of Jesup, Diedre Hodges of Brunswick and Kimberly (Laramie) Boatright of Surrency; a brother, Ken (Julie) Wiggins of Baxley; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Sept. 28 at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with pastors David Hubbs, Mark and Matt Griffis officiating. Interment followed in Screven City Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Lee Jackson, Logan Anderson, Hagen Johnson, Chris Roberson, Preston Schue, Travis Carter, Michael Thornton and Dillon Hewitt. Honorary pallbearers were the staffs of Appling Healthcare and Dr. Tonya Fordham.

Sabrina Jones Manning

Jesup—Sabrina Jones Manning, 65, of Jesup died Sept. 27, 2021.

The Florida native had spent much of her adult life in Wayne County and was a member of the Manningtown Presbyterian church. Her caring span of serving as a tax preparer for 12 years and working for eight years for Florida Department of Transportation and eight years with Amelia Island Plantation allowed her to be helpful to many friends and family in their business endeavors.

She was predeceased by her husband, Willie H. Manning Jr.; her parents, Roland and Ruthie Crews Jones.

Survivors include three daughters, Lisa Manning, Malissie Teringer and Kayleigh Dinsbeer all  of Jesup; three sons, Adam (Bobie) Sapp of Hortense, Henry Sapp and Blake Dinsbeer, both of Jesup; three sisters, Sherry (Bobby) Willis of Yulee, Florida, Selena Wilburn of Waynesville; half- sister, Laurie McDonald of St. Marys; three brothers, Don (Monica) Manning, John (Becky) Manning and Ray Jones all of Jesup; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. from Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with her brother, the Rev. Don Manning, officiating. Graveside services will follow in Manningtown Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be family.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to services at the funeral home.

Annie Faye Reddish Johnson

Jesup—Annie Faye Reddish Johnson, 78, died Sept. 24, 2021, at home under the care of Hospice of South Georgia and her loving family.

A native and lifelong resident of Wayne County, she was born on Feb. 16, 1943, to the late Joe Reddish and Estelle Herrin Reddish. She was a self-taught beautician who worked from home for many years, specializing in the old-fashioned “beehive” hair style. She was truly gifted as an artist, not only with styling hair, but she could also draw beautifully and could sing as well. Many days and nights were spent singing and praising the Lord during revivals and camp meetings all over the area. She was an active member of the Crossroads Church of God for nearly 50 years, where she loved singing in the choir and participating in nearly every activity.

As an actor, she played the part of Lulu Roman in the Wayne County Production’s version of the Hee Haw show and was Mrs. Claus for the Wayne County Christmas Parade and the Santa House for countless years. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leighton Revae Johnson Sr.; her son, Leighton Revae Johnson Jr.; her sisters, Wilera Aspinwall, Grace Crews, Ruth Reddish; and her brother, John Reddish.

Survivors include two children, Mike Carpenter and Kim Carpenter of Jesup; a daughter-in-law, Connie Carpenter of Jesup and Tiffany Costello; grandchildren, Serenity Carpenter, Brittany (Jon) Apler, Heather Vidal Carpenter, Danni-Lynn Carpenter, Abigail Pruin, Chad Wheeler, Megan Crawford and Michael Wheeler; great-grandchildren, Sky Carpenter, Dalton Shaw, Kazlynn Taylor, Wyatt Perkins, Joe Perkins, Cesc Vidal Carpenter, Wesson Vidal Carpenter and Kamil Merritt; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

Funeral services were held Sept. 27 at Crossroads Church of God with the Rev. Brandon Stone and Hulet Smith officiating. The family received friends one hour prior to the services at the church.

Interment followed in New Hope Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Chad Wheeler, Wyatt Perkins, Joe Perkins, Dalton Shaw, Cesc Vidal Carpenter and  Carl Aspinwall.

Tammy Suzette Tootle

Jesup—Tammy Suzette Tootle, 57, died Sept. 24, 2021, at Satilla Memorial Hospital from injuries sustained in an accident.

A native and lifelong resident of Southeast Georgia, she was born on Feb. 9, 1964 in Jesup. She was an expert seamstress by trade who loved to sing and dance.

She was a loving wife and mother who enjoyed getting dressed up and always kept her home in tip top shape. She was known to be the “life of the party,” in many situations and she loved her family more than anything, especially her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl Tootle and Mildred Dixon Tootle; and her first husband, Bill Brannen.

Survivors include her three children, Billy (Luz) Brannen of Savannah, Holly Brannen of Jesup and Robert Grover and fiancé, McKayla, of Blackshear; one stepson, Chad (Katrina) Brannen of Jesup; five grandchildren, Nora, Stella, Athens, Alive’a and Blakelyn; and a host of step-grandchildren and extended family members.

Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 3, at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup.

Dr. Anita Flowers-Childers

Jesup—Dr. Anita Flowers-Childers died Sept. 22, 2021, at her residence in Jesup following a lengthy illness.

She was born on Nov. 7, 1939, to the late Alberta Flowers in Jesup. She was educated in the Wayne County Training School. She continued her education at Clarke College, where she obtained her bachelor’s degree. She then received a master’s degree from Atlanta University and a doctorate degree from Ohio State University. She was passionate about education and specialized in reading and literacy.

She was joined in holy matrimony on June 10, 1961, to her sweetheart, Sherman O. Childers Sr.

She was a member of Mt. Mariah AME Church. She spent her free time tutoring children and shopping. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Alberta Flowers; her only son, Sherman O. Childers Jr.; her sisters, Willie Lee Doomes, Mary Lee Grooms, Bernice Hines and Elois Hardy; and one brother, Aaron Wilson Sr.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Sherman O. Childers Sr. of Jesup; a brother, Booker T. Wilson Sr. of Atlanta; three grandchildren, Megan Moore (David) of Savannah, Sherman O. Childers III of Atlanta and Tarrick Fuquay of Savannah; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A walk-through viewing was held Sept. 29 at Royal Funeral Home Chapel.

Graveside services will be held today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. at Jesup City Cemetery.

For those unable to attend, the service will be live-streamed at royalfuneralhomeinc.com.

Those planning to attend either the viewing or graveside services are expected to wear a mask and keep a safe social distance in reference to COVID-19 protocols.

Peggy Arline Purcell Ritchey

Peggy Arline Purcell Ritchey, 84, died Sept. 21, 2021, at 10:35 a.m.

She was born in Dade County, Florida, on Nov. 12, 1936 to Olen Sidney Purcell and Claudia Rachel Crummey Purcell.

She was a retired school teacher with 35-plus years of service. 

Survivors include a son, Scott Cameron Ritchey of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; a sister, Linda F. Purcell of Fort Smith, Arkansas; a brother, Larry K. Purcell of Fort Smith, Arkansas; and many Wayne County relatives.
