Clinton Carver Hartmann

Orlando, Florida—Clinton Carver Hartmann, 72, died Aug. 26, 2021, at Kindred Hospital in Melbourne, Florida.

He was born on March 9, 1949, in Jesup to the late Clarence Clinton “Billy” Hartmann Jr. and Annie Stewart Carver Hartmann. He spent his early years in Jesup before moving with his family to Cocoa, Florida, where he was educated in the Brevard Public School System eventually graduating from Cocoa High School in 1967.

He pursued higher education and was the recipient of a bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Florida and later a master’s degree of business administration from Rollins College. 

After graduation, his first job was with Disney in Orlando, Florida. He relocated his family several times over the years as was necessary to advance his career, eventually getting into credit union management while living in Miami, Florida.

After his children were off to college, he moved to Houston, Texas, where he served as CEO of Houston, Texas Fire Fighters Federal Credit Union for more than 12 years before his retirement in 2016.

He loved children and always supported programs that helped children. He coached baseball teams and was president of the Little League Association in Orlando. When he was chairman of the board of Houston Chapter of Credit Unions, he spearheaded various fundraising events for the Children’s Charities Program, which benefited all of the Houston area campuses of the Texas Children’s Hospital.  He was a lifelong Methodist and a member of Spring of Life United Methodist Church in Orlando. In his later years, he enjoyed traveling and playing golf, and he had really enjoyed playing tennis in his younger years.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Anne Edrington Hartmann of Orlando; a daughter and son-in-law, Keri Jean and Thomas Garland of Orlando, and their children, Katherine, Elizabeth and Joshua; son and daughter-in-law, Kelly and Cynthia Hartmann of Pearland, Texas, and their children, Liam and Penelope; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Christopher and Susan Hartmann of Land O’ Lakes, Florida, and Craig and Anne Hartmann of Cocoa Beach, Florida; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3, at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup.

Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 4, at 11 a.m. at Middleton Memorial Cemetery in Long County.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in his honor to Texas Children’s Hospital, Office of Philanthropy, P.O. Box 300630, Houston, TX 77230-0630.

He had a big heart and a determined spirit and will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him, the family said.

Joseph Edward Thornton

Blackshear—Joseph Edward Thornton, 82, died Aug. 28, 2021, at Harborview Healthcare in Blackshear after a lengthy illness.

A native and lifelong resident of Pierce County, he was born on April 4, 1939, to the late Lawton and Mae Griffin Thornton. He worked in the logging business and was a true “jack of all trades.”  Whether it was mechanic work, building things or plumbing, it truly seemed as through there was nothing he couldn’t do. He loved children and always had a special relationship with his nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Barbara Mobley, Betty Guy and Margaret Roberts, and his brothers, Roy Thornton, Gilbert Thornton, Gustene Thornton and James Thornton.

Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, James “Jimmy” and Cynthia Thornton of Patterson, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

Graveside funeral services were held Aug. 30 in Offerman Cemetery with the Rev. Dale Bange officiating.

Ronald Aaron Daniels

Jesup—Ronald Aaron Daniels, 72, affectionately known by many as “R.D.,” died Aug. 26, 2021, at home after a lengthy illness.

He was born on Nov. 14, 1948, in Blackshear to the late A.R. and Mary Groover Daniels. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict, where he was wounded in battle and lost his leg. Not one to sit around feeling sorry for himself, he quickly got back to work as soon as he was able. He worked for Georgia Narrow Fabrics for many years, even relocating to Honduras for a short period of time before taking a position with Healthy Pet, from which he retired in 2016.

When he wasn’t working, he loved all sorts of outdoor activities, including, fishing, skiing and camping. He was quite a dancer and had taught himself to play the guitar. He also enjoyed singing with his family, playing cards and watching Westerns on television.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Michelle Daniels Manning, and his siblings, Junior Daniels, Arvie Daniels, Velma Todd, Joseph Daniels and Calvin Daniels.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Sandra Wheelis Daniels of Jesup; a son, Steven (Kimberly) Daniels of Jesup; grandchildren, Tiffany (Josh) Woods, Joey (Tisha) Daniels, Tyler Manning and Courtney Daniels, all of Jesup, and Kyle Smith of Gainesville; sisters, Faye (David) Dennison of Screven, Mary Ruth (Woody) Manuel of Jesup and Vesta Mae (John) Tapley of Jesup; brothers, Danny Daniels of Jesup, Bobby (Susie) Daniels of Jesup and Leston (Dorine) Daniels of Hazlehurst; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

Funeral services were held Aug. 30 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup.

Interment followed in Ritch Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors rendered by the United States Army.

Pallbearers were Jody and Johnny Wheelis, Chad Tatum, James Todd, Brian Vickers, Luke and Richie Daniels and Leslie Burch.

Theodore Lawrence Teringer Sr.

Jesup—Theodore Lawrence “Ted” Teringer Sr., 66, died Aug. 25, 2021, at Jesup Health and Rehab after an extended illness.

A resident of Wayne County for more than 40 years, he was born in Ohio and raised in Inglewood, California.

After graduation from high school, he served his country for four years in the United States Army. While stationed at Fort Stewart, he met and married the love of his life, the late Barbara Engly Spradley Teringer.

He was a truck driver by trade who loved the open road. His friendly nature and love of people made him a joy to be around, and “he never met a stranger.“ He loved talking with people, bowling, fishing and spending time with the ones he loved the most.

Survivors include two sons, Theodore Lawrence “Teddy” Teringer Jr.  and Creighton Travis Teringer, both of Jesup; his  father-in-law, Vernon Spradley of Jesup; two grandchildren, Brianna Teringer and Elijah Rousey Teringer of Jesup; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

Funeral services were held Aug. 28 at Howard and Jones Funeral Home with the Rev. Rev. Tim Fulmer officiating. Interment was in Manningtown Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Doris Hester Sapp

Jesup—Doris Hester Sapp, 67, died Aug. 25, 2021, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

A resident of Jesup for the past 22 years, she was born on June 24, 1954, in Griffin to the late Hugh and Louise Key Hester.  She worked as a manager in the electronics department at Walmart for many years before her retirement five years ago.  She truly loved other people, and she especially adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She adored the time they spent together, and she shopped regularly for gifts to give them to show her love. She had the kindest heart and the warmest smile, her family said. She never met a stranger, and she was well loved by all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, her brother-in-law, Monty Sapp, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Michael A. Sapp of Jesup; a daughter, Lianne (Jeremy) Dubberly of Jesup; a sister, Deborah Watson of Griffin; brothers, Jeff (Kimberly) Hester of Morrow, John (Charlotte) Hester of Griffin and Kenny Hester of Griffin; grandchildren,  Zoe (Bryce) Stephenson of Jacksonville and Arabella McKenzie and Abigail Pounds, both of Jesup; great-grandchildren, Jaimee, Delilah, Adalyne and Herbie; a sister-in-law, Lisa (George) Young of St. Marys; nephews, Patrick and Michael Taylor; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

Graveside funeral services were held Aug. 29 at Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery.

Ida Jeffords Jennings

Jesup—Ida Jeffords Jennings, 75, died Aug. 25, 2021, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

A resident of Jesup for the past 38 years and former resident of Fort Mill and Abbeville, South Carolina, she was born on Sept. 7, 1945, in Dovesville, South Carolina, to the late Robert and Vinnie Jeffords.

She spent her early years there and was educated in the Darlington County school system. She worked as a seamstress for a while in her younger years before taking a job selling insurance with Liberty National Life Insurance Company, from which she would retire after many years of sales in Baxley, Waycross and Jesup. She enjoyed her work and received numerous awards and bonuses over the years for her outstanding performance.

In her spare time, she enjoyed fishing and spending time with her family and friends. She was a longtime member of Trinity Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Bubba and Billy, and her sister, Ruth.

Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Edwin G. Jennings III of Jesup; a daughter, Melissa (Bossy) Hall of Jesup; a stepson, Kevin Edwin Jennings of Elberton; a sister, Ann Ard of Hartsville, South Carolina;  grandchildren, Lee Hall and fiancee, Beth and Brittany Jennings; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended-family members.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Kenneth “Kenny” Darwin Anderson

Jesup—Kenneth “Kenny” Darwin Anderson, 93, died peacefully at Harborview Health Systems in Jesup on Aug. 29, 2021.

He was born in Wayne County to Arlie and Ora Slater Anderson on March 2, 1928. He was a former school bus driver before starting his long career at Rayonier in 1954.

One of his favorite hobbies was growing a big garden and blessing many with the fruits of his labors. In his early retirement years, he could be seen around town sitting on the tailgate of his shiny black 1953 Ford pickup truck, selling greens.

He loved to visit family and friends and reminisce about the old days and who married who and who their children were. He loved to joke and make people laugh, and he especially enjoyed going to the Rayonier retirees fish fry at Lake Grace.

He liked to ask, “Do you know the way to Heaven?” answering, “You turn right and stay straight.”

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two wives, Willa Mae and Anne; a granddaughter, Miranda Anderson; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Anderson; four sisters and their spouses, Eva (Herbert) Reddick, Bebe (Harry) Webb, Vela Mae (Jimmy) Olliff, and infant Annie Ruth; and eight brothers, Earnest (Louise), Foster (Zelma), Ledford (Ester and Ruby), Ford (Hazel), Woodrow (Jeannette), Arlie Jr. (Bobbie), Edward and Brantley.

Survivors include three sons, Dwane (Sarah) Anderson, Roger (Dale) Anderson and Rex (Terry) Anderson, all of Jesup; grandchildren, April (Steve) Dixon and their children, Dake and Hallie of Jesup, Kade (Kristy) and their children, Kadie and Kaycee of Odum, Evan (Sharla) and their children, Asher Anderson and Kencie and Khloe Boyette of Waycross, Miranda’s son, Kyler Anderson and Allen Anderson, both of Jesup,Shelby (Cliff) Hudson and their children, Emily, Kaleigh, Briley and Barrett of Ludowici, and Mary (Chris) Pickering of Enid, Oklahoma; the mother of his sons, Elizabeth Duncan; a sister, Lynnah Bumgardner; two sisters-in-law, Thera Anderson and Betty Anderson, both of Odum; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside funeral services were held Sept. 1 in Friendship Cemetery with Pastor and nephew, Calvin Anderson, officiating. Active pallbearers were Kade, Evan and Allen Anderson, Victor Oliff, Chuck Bumgardner and David Johnson.

Leon “Buddy” Ring

Covington—Leon “Buddy” Ring died Aug. 25, 2021.

He was a Wayne County native and graduate of Wayne County High School.

He proudly served in the United States Army and was part of the F Troop 4th Calvary which included tours in Vietnam. He was awarded several medals including Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Air Medal and Purple Heart. He was a loved and respected member of the F Troop.

He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Retiring after 41 years from Union 72 out of Atlanta, he enjoyed classic cars, fishing, traveling, and most of all spending time with his family and friends.

His parents, Wilmer and Thelma Ogden Ring, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Sue Ring, of Covington; a son, Andy (Shannon) Ring of Monticello; a daughter, Kimberly (Harry) Ragan of Monticello; a son, Keaton Ring of Covington; a sister, Diane (David) Jones of LaFayette; an uncle, Euell (Ellen) Ogden of Odum; 10 grandchildren, AJ Ring, Gary Ring, Christopher Ring, Ashlynn Ring, Talan Ring, Harry Ragan III “Tripp,” Kolin Ragan, Khloe Ring, Ava Ring and Parker Ring; and many other nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Funeral services were held Aug. 27 at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with the Rev. Glenn Ring officiating. Interment followed in the Odum City Cemetery. Active pallbearers were his family.

James “Jimmy” Hershel Collins Jr.

Jesup—James “Jimmy” Hershel Collins Jr., 71, of Jesup died Aug. 26, 2021.

The Dublin native had lived in Wayne County most of his life and was a 1968 graduate of Wayne County High School. He was owner and operator of Collins Fabrication and enjoyed fishing, golfing and tinkering.

He is predeceased by his former wife, Mary Louise Poppell Collins,and his parents, Hershel and Minnie Collins.

Survivors include sons, Jim Collins of Brunswick, Sherod (Jana) Collins of Jesup and Burt (Melissa) Collins of Jesup; two sisters, Nadra (Tom) Scott of Roanoke, Virginia, and Violet Marrow (William Love) of Ridgely, Maryland; three brothers, Quinn Collins of Jesup, John (Becky) Collins of Baxley and Mark (Julie) Collins of Leicester, North Carolina; two granddaughters, Kate and Marlie Collins; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services were held Aug. 28 in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Pete Boyd officiating.

Randy W. Paulson

Jesup—Randy W. Paulson, 71, of Jesup died Aug. 24, 2021.

The Wayne County native was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and formerly worked with his father in Paulson Construction Company. He was most proud of being a 1969 graduate of Wayne County High School and his work with Civil Air Patrol out of Brunswick.

His parents, Walter and Evelyn “Impi” Lindell Paulson, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his cousin and caregiver, Joan Lindell Wentworth of Jesup.  He loved his extended family and his pets.

Graveside funeral services were held Aug. 26 in Jesup City Cemetery with Father Keith O’Neill officiating.

Joseph “Joe” Wayne Manning

Screven—Joseph “Joe” Wayne Manning, 57, of Screven died Aug. 25, 2021.

The Wayne County native was a member of Crossroads Church of God and a captain and jail administrator with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. He also had a certification with accident reconstruction and was an arson investigator, a deputy coroner, a sniper and an honor guardsman.

He was a third-degree Master Mason and secretary for the lodge, an Elks Club member, a former past president of the Jesup Jaycees (where he worked on the fair committee for many years )and a Leadership Wayne graduate.

When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, crafting leather and being owner of Manning Custom Leather. Other interests were spending time with his grandchildren, gardening, and smoking meats for his church and community.

His parents, Lloyd and Marilyn Webb, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Tammi Roberson of Screven; a daughter, Rusti (Ryan) Harrison of Gum Branch; two sons, Timothy Hewitt of Screven and Richard (Kristen) Hewitt of Bozeman, Montana; eight grandchildren, Hayden, Emma, Kyler-Ann, Piper, Ezra, Adalyn, Alivia and Kenzington; two sisters, Lucretia (Hutch) Hutchinson of Lawton, Oklahoma, and Linda Southwell of Fernandina Beach, Florida; two brothers, Lonnie (Judy) Manning of Odum and Phil (Erin) Manning of Cummings; several nieces and nephews; and very special friends, Steven (Donna) Crane and Sandra Tarantino, all of Odum.

Funeral services were held Aug. 28 at Crossroads Church of God with Pastor Brandon Stone and the Rev. Keith Lairsey officiating with COVID precautions in place with masks. Honorary pallbearers were Mark and Kyle Manning, John Carter, Phillip Spell, and all law-enforcement. Interment was in the Screven City Cemetery with full law enforcement honors and full Masonic rites.

Franklin Eugene “Gene” Altman Jr.

Jesup—Franklin Eugene “Gene” Altman Jr., 74, of Jesup died Aug. 31, 2021. 

The Hazlehurst native had lived in Wayne County all of his adult life and was of the Baptist faith.

The U.S. Army veteran was very loyal to his country, having served in the Vietnam War. He was a state captain for military funerals in the Patriot Guard Riders. He also was a member of the Combat Veteran’s Motorcycle Association and the VFW. Some favorite pastimes were motorcycles, “loving” on his grandchildren and his dogs.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Brandi Altman; his parents, Franklin “Frank” Eugene Sr. and Helen Altman; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Alvin and Mary Ann Watson; and a brother-in-law, Mark Watson.

Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Chris Altman of Jesup; a daughter, Brittany Graham of Jesup; three sons, Franklin Eugene Altman III of Waycross, Chris (Heather) Altman of Jesup and Brad Hires of Statesboro; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister, Joy Altman of Orlando, Florida; and a brother, Dave Altman of Jesup.

Private family burial services will be held today (Thursday) at 1 p.m. in Georgia Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Glennville with the Rev. Fred Anderson officiating.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon today at Rinehart and Sons Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to ARF, P.O. Box 432, Jesup, GA 31598.

Debra Kay Quinn McCombs

Jesup—Debra Kay Quinn McCombs, 58, of Jesup died Aug. 30, 2021.

The Oklahoma native had lived in Wayne County for many years and was a homemaker who enjoyed everything about her family. She also loved to go camping, fishing and spending time on the river.

Survivors are her husband of 38 years, Marty McCombs of Jesup; sons, William (Shelby) McCombs of Jesup and James (Katie) McCombs of Texas; seven grandchildren; and several siblings.

A private family burial will be held today (Thursday) in Jesup City Cemetery with the Rev. Pete Boyd officiating.

Suzanne Mansfield

Odum—Suzanne Mansfield, 59, of Odum died on Aug. 28, 2021, at Wayne Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

She was married to Dillard Mansfield on March 11, 1978. She worked as a seamstress. She found happiness from fishing and going to the beach but mostly from her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Dillard Mansfield; four children Tina Hand, Jessica Oliver, David Mansfield and Miranda Mansfield; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and extended family.

Arrangements will be announced later by the family.

Cremation will be provided by Golden Isles Cremation of Brunswick.
