Dr. Derrell Rentz
Jesup—Dr. Derrell Rentz, 83, of Jesup died Aug. 14, 2025 under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.
The Duval County, Florida, native and U.S. Air Force veteran had lived in Wayne County since 2002. He was a member and former pastor of Hickox Baptist Church in Brantley County and Red Hill Baptist Church in Wayne County. He received a bachelor’s degree in theology as well as a doctorate of religious education and a master’s degree in Christian counseling from Luther Rice Seminary College. He served the Lord in ministry through pastoring and counseling for more than 50 years. A favorite hobby was reading.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Baxley Rentz; a daughter, Julie Agee; and a sister, Joyce Conner.
Survivors include three daughters, Sheryl (Dewayne) Herrin of Jesup, Kelley (David) Emig of Rogers, Arkansas and Karen Lewis of Lynchburg, Virginia; 20 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Debbie (Artie) Schlesinger of Long Island, New York, and Cindy (Carlos) Cortes of Charlotte, North Carolina; two sons-in-law, Ben Agee of Jesup and Kelly Lewis of Brunswick; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, at 11 a.m. at Red Hill Baptist Church with Pastor Alan Morgan and Missionary Barbara Hill officiating. Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be his family.
Family will receive friends on Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Eddie C. Surrency
Odum—Eddie C. Surrency, 75, of Odum died on Aug. 16, 2025.
The Wayne County native was a member of Jesup Church of God and a retired ITT Rayonier employee. He served his country in the Army National Guard.
He used his horses and carriage to serve his community in parades, weddings and other special occasions. Hunting with his dogs was a favorite hobby.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Sandra S. Surrency; his father, Cecil W. Surrency; and a nephew, Stan Newman Jr.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Christy and Sean Ellerbee of Monroe; two grandchildren, Jack and Ben Ellerbee; his mother, Vivian Surrency (Vernon) Aspinwall of Jesup; and a sister, Kim Surrency (George) Newman of Odum.
Funeral services were held Aug. 20, 2025 at Rinehart Chapel with the Rev. Calvin Anderson officiating. Interment followed in Red Hill Cemetery.

David O. Davis
Odum—David O. Davis, 77, of Odum Aug. 17, 2025.
The South Carolina native had lived in Wayne County most of his life. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Altamaha Baptist Church. He was a retired Georgia Department of Transportation employee and later started his own business appraising for the state highway system.
An avid Atlanta Braves fan, he participated in all Wayne County sports and was very involved in athletic endeavors.
He was predeceased by a beloved daughter, Ondie Davis Phillips,and a brother, Daniel Davis.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Ogden Davis of Odum; a son, Adam (Heidi) Davis of Brooklet; a sister, Betty Ann (Charles) Pilgrim of Liberty, South Carolina; grandchildren, Bradley (Mallorie) Phillips and his father, Michael Phillips, of Jesup, Alex (Mary) Davis of Brooklet and Daisy Davis of Brooklet; great-grandchildren, Brady and Ada Kate; several special sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Aug. 19 at Altamaha Baptist Church with the Rev. Stanley Todd officiating. Private family interment will followed in Altamaha Cemetery. Active pallbearers were members of his family.
