Dixie Thompson King
Jesup—Dixie Thompson King, 92, of Jesup died on June 23, 2025, under the care of At Home Senior Living.
She was a Tatnall County native and had lived in Wayne County most of her adult life and was a 1950 graduate of Jesup High School. She was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and a 33-year retiree with ITT Rayonier.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jefferson Grady Thompson and Nola Walker Thompson who had a small farm in the 1940s which shaped her hard work ethic and financial values that lasted a lifetime.
She met and married the “love of her life,” Eldred B. King, in 1952, and they had enjoyed 70 years together before his death in 2023. All who knew them would say they were joined at the hip and vowed to always pay for what they had and to never owe the other “fella.”
They were blessed with a son, Jeff King and his family, who she traveled with extensively and enjoyed all of the sports and education endeavors.
In addition to her husband, Eldred King, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Sadie Kline, Nora Jordan, Martha Brennan, Grannon Thompson and Harry Thompson; and a granddaughter, Katelyn Anna King.
Survivors include a son, Jeff (Sheree) Gordon King of Naperville, Illinois; two grandsons, Spencer and Weston King of Naperville; a brother, Ross (Dean) Thompson of Jesup; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held June 30 from Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Steve Larson officiating.
Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Durand H. Westberry
Odum—Durand H. Westberry, 73, of Odum died July 1, 2025.
The Florida native had lived in Wayne County the past 17 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of New Hope Freewill Baptist Church and the Shriners and Masons.
He loved to hunt deer and hogs and watch Westerns. He was preceded in death by his wife, Renee Rondeau Westberry; his parents, Cecil and Helen Westberry; and his brother, Calvert Westberry.
Survivors include his two brothers, Ernie and Robert Westberry, both of Odum; a brother-in-law, Paul (Tammy) Rondeau of Atlanta; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held July 7 at 11 a.m. at New Hope Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor Tim Horne officiating. Interment will follow in the New Hope Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be his family and friends.
Visitation will be held an hour prior to services at the church.
