Susan Nettles Milea

Jesup—Susan Nettles Milea, 66, died July 12, 2021 at Memorial Health University Medical Center after an extended illness.

A former resident of New York and a resident of Florida for more than  25 years, she was born on Sept. 15, 1954, in Wayne County to the late Wilbur and Adris Smith Nettles. She was a homemaker. In her spare time, she enjoyed fishing and spending time with the ones she loved.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Milea; a son, Michael Milea; and two brothers, Tommy and Allen Nettles.

Survivors include her sons, Paul Milea and Joseph Grandinetti; two brothers, Ralph Nettles and Norman Nettles; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended-family members.

Private graveside services will be held in Jesup City Cemetery.

Robert “Brantley” Anderson

Odum—Robert “Brantley” Anderson, 98, of Odum died July 15, 2021.

The Wayne County native was a Baptist and was known lovingly as a “Southern country gentleman.” He enjoyed his life of farming, including row crops, cattle, vegetables and anything pertaining to the outdoors.

A Rayonier retiree, he was most proud to take care of his wife and family.  His son, Robert Anderson, preceded him in death, along with his grandson, Brant Anderson; sisters, Bebe Webb, Eva Reddick and Vela Mae Olliff; and brothers, Earnest, Ledford, Ford, Arlie Jr., Woodrow, Ed and Foster Anderson.

Survivors include his wife of 75 years, Thera Mae Anderson of Odum; two daughters, Judy (Jerry) Landon and Ginger Smith, all of Jesup; a granddaughter, Meliea DeLoach of Jesup; two great-grandchildren, Axl and Ace Anderson; a sister, Lynnah Bumgardner of Brunswick; and a brother, Kenny Anderson of Jesup.

Celebration of life services were held July 18 at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with nephew and the Rev. Calvin Anderson officiating. Graveside services followed in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery.  Active pallbearers were his family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Georgia Hospice Care, 141 Macon Street, Jesup, GA 31545, and the family is most thankful for its nursing care.

Ray G. Beard

Jesup—Ray G. Beard, 81, of Jesup died July 16, 2021.

The Alabama native and U.S. Army veteran had lived in Wayne County most of his life and was a member of Memorial Baptist Church. The Rayonier retiree had worked also with M&S Steel in Baxley.

He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, collecting arrowheads, his animals and spending time with his family.

His former wife and the mother of his children, Irene Kirkland Beard, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Angie Brannen Beard of Jesup; a daughter, Sharon (Tommy) Corry of Jesup; sons, Tim (Michele) Beard of Folkston and Mike (Jeanie) Beard of Screven; a stepdaughter, Keisha Price of Jesup, and a stepson, Charlie Hartley of Boston, Massachusetts; two sisters, Terri Senter of Gadsden, Alabama and Pat (Jody) Stone of Gatlinburg, Tennessee; brothers, Alan Beard and John (Sarah) Beard, both of Gadsden;  and nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held July 20 at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with the Rev. Harris Nix officiating. Interment followed in the Memorial Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were his family and friends. Honorary pallbearers were his co-workers of Rayonier and M&S Steel Company.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Animal Refuge Foundation, P.O. Box 432, Jesup, GA 31598.

Walteen Edge Carter

Odum—Walteen Edge Carter, 91, of Odum died July 19, 2021.

The Truetlen County native had lived in Wayne County most of her adult life and was a member of Jesup Church of God. She was very supportive of her husband, Festus Carter, and they co-owned Carter Dredging Company and the Odum Sunbelt Blueberry Farm. They enjoyed working together to help establish the ITT Rayonier Employees Federal Credit Union in Wayne County.

She also enjoyed cooking, canning, fishing and spending time with her family.

Her husband of 67 years, Festus Carter, and several siblings preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, David (Carolyn) Carter of Odum; granddaughters, Brooke (Gordy) Campbell of Odum and Dawn (Michael) Elliott of Odum; grandsons, Justin Bennett and Dustin (Monica) Bennett; great-grandchildren, Carter, Griffin, Hudson, Gunner and Cambri; a brother, W.T. (MaryAnn) Edge of Kibbee; and several nieces and nephews.

Celebration-of-life services were held  July 21 at Jesup Church of God with Pastor Justin Moriarty, the Rev. Scott Hatten and the Rev. Ronnie Rentz officiating. Interment followed in Odum Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Earl Beaver, Timothy Hillyard, Kyle and Kevin McCrary, Tracy Brown and Dylan Brown.

Dianne Johns Livernois

Jesup—Dianne Johns Livernois, 65, of Jesup died July 15, 2021.

The Homerville native had lived in Wayne County most of her life, was a homemaker and attended several Church of God churches.

All who knew her called her “Nana” because of her loving and kind spirit. Her creative juices and talents flowed when she would sew, crochet, craft, work on puzzles, make jewelry and arrange flowers. Her last favorite work of art was making tooth-fairy pillows for all of her great grandchildren.

Her husband, Willard Livernois, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharri (David) Mosley of Jesup; two grandchildren, Dustin (Elizabeth) Devine of Mims, Florida, and Kirsty (Josh) Woodcock of Jesup; four great-grandchildren, Aria, Malakai, Eliana and Dalton; two sisters, Rose (Joel) Lunsford of St. Marys and Norma Jean Bush of Jesup; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life service was held July 19 at Rinehart and Sons Funeral Chapel with Pastor Brandon Stone officiating. Interment was private.

Floyd Philip Morgan

Jesup—Floyd Philip Morgan, 80, of Jesup died July 18, 2021.

The Wayne County native was a long-time member of Calvary Baptist Church, an active member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class and served on many committees. However, his most favorite role was being a smiling, loving, back- door greeter (aka Candyman).

He enjoyed growing a bountiful vegetable garden with his wife and always being there for his family.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Doylene Ray Morgan of Jesup; a daughter, Michelda (Earl) Watson of Jesup; a son, Phil (Raye) Morgan of Berthoud, Colorado; a sister, Shirlene (Charlie) Ward of Jacksonville, Florida; grandchildren, Cole and Casen Watson, Madison, Mary Beth and Jack Morgan; and a special cousin, David Harrelson.

Celebration-of-life services were held July 21, 2021 from Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Vann Dempsey and Associate Pastor Pete Boyd officiating. Honorary pall bearers were the Senior Adult Sunday School Class members of Calvary Baptist Church. Private committal service were held by the family.

J.B. Perry

Jesup—J.B. Perry, 83, of Jesup died July 17, 2021.

The Nash-ville native had lived in Wayne County the past 15 years and was a member of Crossroads Church of God, where he was a former Sunday school teacher.

A U.S. Army veteran was a retired employee with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. An important part of his life was serving the ministry through pastoring and mission programs. He also volunteered with Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for 10 years.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Geneva Oswalt Perry of Jesup; two daughters, Pam (Gregory) Hites of Douglasville and Linda Gelbhaar of Wallace, North Carolina; a son, Mike (Cathy) Perry of Plant City, Florida; a god-child, Sylena Eppich of Wallace; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A celebration-of-life service was held July 20 at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with the Rev. Hulet Smith and Pastor Brandon Stone officiating. Interment followed in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers were his family. Honorary pallbearers were members of the WMH Auxiliary.

Thomas Eugene Boone

Jesup—Brother Thomas Eugene Boone, 90, of Jesup died July 15, 2021, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Facility following an extended illness.

He was born on Nov. 24, 1930, to the late, Helen Elma Drakes Boone and Tommie Boone in Wayne County. He was a member at St. John First Born Holiness church, where he assisted the Senior Choir.

He and the late Ethel Lee Burnette Boone were joined in holy matrimony in 1957.

He was employed at Wayne Line and Hendrix Hauling Company. He enjoyed riding his bike, landscaping, teaching his grandchildren to drive and how to play the piano.

He was preceded in death by both parents, Helen and Tommie Boone; his wife,  Ethel Lee Burnette-Boone (by a short seven months)  his two children, Margo “Pennie” Boone and David Boone; four sisters, Annie Will, Lucie Ann, Helen Davis and Hattie Rushing; and six brothers, the Rev. James “Jimmy” Boone, Theophilus Boone Sr., Rufus Boone, Archie Boone, Marion Boone and Osborn Boone.

Survivors include four daughters, Hazel Boone of Fitzgerald, Shelia Frazier of Brunswick, Cynthia Boone-Hudson of Newport News, Virginia, and Brittney Boone of Brunswick; two sons, Dexter Boone Sr. of Fitzgerald and Eugene Bell of Valdosta ; his sister, Eddie Mae Burns of Savannah; 21 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A viewing was held on July 20 and a graveside service on July 21at Jesup City Cemetery.

The family asks that all planning to attend either service, adhere to the guidelines set for the preventing of the spread of COVID-19, including wearing masks and observing the social-distancing guidelines.

Senior Pastor Carl Mackey

Jesup—Senior Pastor Carl Mackey, 76, of Jesup died July 16, 2021, at his residence surrounded by his loved ones.

He was born on June 17, 1945, to Pearlie Lee Taylor in Screven and Henry Jones of Blackshear. He was educated in Wayne County Training School and graduated in the class of 1966. Upon completing high school, he was employed with CSX Railroad Transportation where he retired after 39 years of dedicated service.

He gave his life to Christ, Feb. 15, 1976, as an adult, when he became a member of Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Black-shear. His early upbringing in church was at Bennett Union Baptist Church, and he later served as a pastor in Pentecostal Miracles of Deliverance Center Inc. in Waycross and Jesup.

He shared his testimony to hundreds, providing hope and inspiration, which developed his commitment to those who struggled with addiction. “Dope to Hope” was his testimony which he shared with many, especially those incarcerated at the Wayne County Detention Center for more than 35 years.

He was honored with a service award, honoring his 30-plus years of service on June 30, 2019, presented by former Wayne County Sheriff John Carter. Additionally, he received a Proclamation Day, proclaiming June 30 Carl Mackey Day by Commissioner James “Boot” Thomas on June 30, 2019.

He and his wife, Dr. Jennifer C. Mann-Mackey, founded New Covenant Family Life Center Inc., located in Jesup, where they pastored and co-pastored for the past 20 years.

After retiring from CSX, he invested a lot of time in furthering his education by attending several seminary schools to include his experience at Fresh Fire Theological School in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada and Jacksonville Theological Seminary in Jacksonville, Florida.

He owned and operated the local Christian book store, Grace Abounds, located in Jesup, prior to becoming ill. It was named in honor of his wife’s mother, who has passed away.

His life’s motto was and has always been “Love wins out.” He will always be remembered for his integrity, love for humanity, and being a humble, kindhearted, forgiving, giving Man of God. The world is a better place because he lived, his family said. He loved people and showed his love for them. He was a confidant to many. He sowed positive seeds everywhere he went. He was a friend to the stranger.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Charles Latson and Henrietta Williams, and his mother-in-law, Grace Helen Mann.

Survivors include his loving wife of 26 years, Dr. Jennifer Mann-Mackey of Jesup; his loving mother, Pearlie Mackey Taylor (Willie B. Taylor, deceased, Blackshear); his children, Carlos Mackey of Jesup, Carla (Dale) Willingham of Waycross, Reggie (Lisa) Mackey of Jesup, Carlton Mackey of Atlanta, Anthony (Susette) Formey of Jesup, Jeanie (Miguel) Vail of Jesup, Christian Mackey of Atlanta and Charity Mackey of Jesup; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; his father-in-law, Carl Mann of Carthage, Mississippi; his sisters-in-law, Janie Mann of Carthage Linda (Ray) Hinton, Richton, Mississippi; his brothers-in-law, Larry (Pat) Mann of Jackson, Mississippi, Terry (Shirley) Mann of Carthage and James (Emma) Mann of Carthage; a special aunt and uncle that he was exceptionally close to, Theodore “Buddy” (Pearline) Mackey of Blackshear and Jacqueline Blakely of Blackshear; a beloved aunt by marriage, Betty (Dave) Shaw Henderson of Gluckstadt, Mississippi; and a host of spiritual sons and daughters of New Covenant Family Life Center and those he ministered to at the Wayne County Detention Center. He was preceded in death by a dear friend, Brother Danny Howell, and  is also survived by a host of dear friends, Jason Bennett, Lawrence Hill, Isaac Moses,  Burnell Hill, Curtis and Joan Hill, Stanley Carter, The

Buffkins, Gary Swindoll, Elder Herman Mitchell, Ronald Madison, Bishop and Pastor Nathan Flowers, Apostle Curtis Lake, David Owens, Pastor Dale Moore, Bishop Christopher Smithson, Bishop Michael Burney, Pastor Bobby Walthour, Prophet Bobby Guyton and Pastor Bobby Orange.

He affectionately loved his “Brownlee Sisters” of Screven. He affectionately loved Ailene Wynn, Herman and Edward Lee “Rawhide” Latson, Henry Cooper, Helen Latson (deceased) and Mable King. He affectionately loved his brothers of the Wayne County Training School classes of 1965 and 1966 Walter Cummings, Eugene Darden, Sam Height, Donald Lawrence, Henry Smith (deceased), Willie “Great Ball” Reddish, Elder Frank Scott, Alonzo Stafford and Lewis Webb.

The family wanted to give special thanks to DaVita Dialysis Center in Jesup and Your Family Hospice of Hinesville.

A memorial was held on July 21 at New Covenant Family Life Center Inc., 682 W. Walnut St. A funeral will be held at his childhood church where he gave his life to Christ, Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 2808 Piney Grove Road, Blackshear, today (Thursday) at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Shiloh Cemetery.

A repast will be held immediately following the interment at Lee Street Community Center, 623 Sycamore St., Blackshear.

Those planning to attend services are asked to wear masks, as the threat of COVID-19 and the spread of it still exist, and adhere to the social-distancing guidelines whether you have been vaccinated or not.  Your cooperation in this matter would be greatly appreciated as the life that you save just might be your own.

Marthine Hutchison

Callahan, Florida—Marthine Hutchison, 90, of Callahan, Florida, died July 9, 2021.

She was born March 15, 1931, in Screven, the daughter of Wade Wasdin and Mary (Smith) Wasdin. Her mother passed away shortly after her birth. She graduated from Screven High School in 1948, and afterwards moved to Jacksonville, Florida.

She married Elmer Hutchison in Alamogordo, New Mexico in 1952. They returned to Jacksonville where she raised her three children: Linda, Elmer Jr. (Butch) and Dorothy Lynn.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary (Smith) Wasdin; father, Wade Wasdin; stepmother, Beulah Wasdin-Welch; husband, Elmer Hutchison; brothers, Carroll and Leon Wasdin; and sister, Shirley Wasdin.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda H. (Michael) Kelly, granddaughter Robin Kelly-Dreskin (Jeremy); great-grandchildren Emily Dreskin and Laszlo Kelly-Dreskin; grandson, James Kelly; son, Butch Hutchison; daughter, Lynn H. Walker (Julian C.), stepgrandsons, Rhett Walker (Sarah Haines), and Aaron Walker (Amber Lewis); great-grandchildren, Ansley Walker and Avery Walker; brother, Ronald Wasdin; and several nieces and nephews and many cousins.

Visitation was held July 11 at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home, Fernandina, Beach, Florida. Graveside services and burial, officiated by the Rev. Shirley Dandelake, were held July 13 at Chapel Hills Cemetery, Jacksonville.
