Dr. Horace William King Jr.
Lenoir City, Tennessee—Dr. Horace William King Jr. died on April 14, 2025.
For more than 40 years, he practiced emergency medicine. He was known to many as “Doc King.” He touched countless lives in East Tennessee—Knoxville, Morristown, Sevierville, Lenoir City, Jefferson City, Greeneville, Newport, Greenback, Athens and Bristol—and Rome, Georgia.
His family said he had a spirit of fierce love, strength and kindness. Always quick with a smile, he shared his passion for life with everyone he met. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, son and brother.
He was a practitioner of more than medicine. Taught carpentry by his father at a young age, he took pride in his skill with his hands—whether starting a concrete plant; building a house with his wife, Carolyn; or helping with his sons’ homes.
A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, he served with quiet humility in Vietnam and Thailand during the Vietnam War and later found deep camaraderie with his fellow veterans.
On his farm, he enjoyed working on fences and tending to his cattle. A lifelong learner, he discovered a passion for geology and paleontology later in life.
His presence was a gift, and his legacy lives on in the love he gave and the lives he helped shape, his family said.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Horace W. King Sr. and Anna Daisy Crews King.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn King; sons, Jeremiah (Brandy) King, Benjamin King and Samuel King; grandchildren, Elijah and Miah King; and brothers, Thomas King and John (Carole) King.
Funeral services were held April 23 at East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 2200 East Governor John Sevier Highway, Knoxville, Tennessee. Military honors were conferred by the East Tennessee State Veterans Honor Guard.
