Lina Meeks Beecher

Jesup—Lina Meeks Beecher, 90, died peacefully on April 4, 2025, at home under the care of Hospice of South Georgia surrounded  by her loving family.

A resident of Jesup since 1955, she was born on Nov. 2, 1934, in Nicholls to the late Walter Daniel Meeks and Earnestine Griswold Meeks. She worked several jobs throughout her life, eventually retiring from the Georgia Department of Transportation district office in 1996 after many years of employment.

She was a longtime faithful member of First Baptist Church, Jesup, where she sang in the choir for many years and attended the Harmony Sunday School Class. She was also a former member of the Jesup Jaycettes and participated in the Jesup Jollies productions. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading books, gardening and spoiling her grandchildren.

She and her late husband traveled extensively after retirement, all over the United States,  including destinations in Hawaii and Alaska. She was always a social butterfly and a ray of sunshine to all her family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell Beecher; sisters, Peggy Meeks Hackel and Gloria Meeks; and a brother, Walter  Drexel Meeks.

Survivors include her daughter, Candee Beecher (Nick) Harris of Jesup; grandchildren, Erica Harris (Ryan) Madray of Jesup and Nicholas Beecher Harris of St. Simons Island; great-grandchildren, Charlee and Canon Madray; host of extended family members; and her beloved caregivers who became special friends, Christi Jones, Valerie Kenny and Susan Kennedy.

Funeral services were held April 7 at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Brooks Haddock officiating.

Private interment services were held in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Josh Barnhill, Ryan Madray, Nicholas Harris and Bradley Barrett.

The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff members of Hospice of South Georgia for all the extra special loving care extended to her during her final days. “You all went above and beyond the call of duty, and we are most appreciative,” the family said.

Sylvia Robertson

Jesup—Sylvia Sue Reddish Robertson, 77, died peacefully on April 3, 2025, at home under the care of Heartland Hospice, surrounded by her loving family.

Sue was born on Aug. 27, 1947, in Wayne County to the late Tommy and Georgie Lee Reddish. She spent her early years in Jesup before she met and married the love of her life, Larry Robertson, while he was serving in the military at Fort Stewart.  The couple moved around frequently, as is customary while serving in the armed forces, eventually settling in Marietta, where they lived for 45 years.

She was loving and caring in nature, devoting herself to her family first and foremost at all times. She loved being outdoors and spending time in her garden. Her favorite times were spent with the ones she loved the most, her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Johnnie Faye Drawdy, Louise Eidson and Della Mae Lloyd, and brothers, Harold Reddish and James Colon Reddish.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Larry Robertson of Jesup; one daughter, Sharon Perry of Jesup; two grandchildren, Heather Robertson of Jesup and Christian Johnson of Foley, Alabama; one sister, Helen Winn of Jesup; two great-grandchildren, Belle Strickland and Madison Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

Funeral services were held April 6 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup with the Rev. Brandon Stone officiating.

Interment followed in Piney Grove Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Christian Johnson, Tommy, Tony, Jamie and Thomas Reddish and Jason Priester.

Howard & Jones Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Louis Mullins Dent

Jesup—Louis Mullins Dent, 70, died on April 4, 2025, at his home after a long illness due to complications from bladder cancer and COPD. 

He was born on Aug. 19, 1954, in Jesup to the late Margaret Mullins Dent and James Calloway Dent. He was a lifelong resident of Wayne County and graduated from Wayne County High School, where he participated in football, baseball and track and remained an enthusiastic Yellow Jacket fan. He retired from RAYM (Rayonier) after 43 years of employment.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the Altamaha River and the woods. He also loved to hunt on the Flint River with the Cawvey family.

Survivors include his son, James Perry (Calysta) Dent of Jesup; two grandchildren, Dylan and Jada Dent; four siblings, Margaret Marie Dent of Savannah, Jamie Dent (Bob) Segrest of Rixeyville, Virginia, Douglas (Terry) Dent of Athens,  and George (Rebecca) Dent of Panama City Beach, Florida; nieces and nephews, Brantley Dent, Megan Dent (Elliott) Zell, William Segrest, Maggie Dent and Mollie Dent (Jacob) Cornell; and great-nieces, Rowan Dent, Mariah Zell and Olivia Martinez.

He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Jennifer Turman (Jared) Smith and her children, Makayla (Alan) Madray, Ridge Johnson, Rayna (Chance) Rodgers; his stepson, T.J. Turman and his daughter, Taylor Turman; and his great-grandson, Ryker Rodgers.

The family extends their gratitude to his devoted and loving caregivers at Georgia Hospice Care (GHC).

In lieu of flowers, he requested that memorials be made to Wounded Warriors Project (woundedwarriorproject.org); Georgia Hospice Care, 141 South Macon Street, Jesup, GA  31545; The Agape Ministry at First United Methodist Church, 205 East Cherry Street 31546; or a charity of your choice.

A celebration-of-life service is planned for May 5 at 3 p.m. from Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Brad Park officiating. 

Family will receive friends from 2 p.m.-3 p.m. at the funeral home.
