Dedra Dukes Shuman

Swainsboro—Dedra Dukes Shuman of Swainsboro, 69, died March 11, 2025.

She was born in Ludowici on Dec. 27, 1955. She was brought up and lived in Jesup for many years, until she relocated to Reidsville and then Swainsboro. She attended Wayne County High School and Georgia Southern College.

She was employed as a school teacher for many years prior to working with RESA until her retirement. During her retirement years, she loved being “DBs” to her grandchildren and spending time with her family.   She also loved spending time with her special and wonderful friends on Tybee Island that she considered family, and she loved to go to and spend time at Disney.

She was the daughter of the late David and Velma Dukes.

Survivors include a son, J.R. (Megan) Shuman; grandchildren, Ellie and Teddy; her precious fur baby, Oz; siblings David Dukes, Denise Voyles and Lynn (Danny) Witt; nieces and nephews, Deanna (Chris) Barlow, David (Rochelle) Dukes, Taylor Voyles and Caitlyn Witt; and a multitude of cousins and close and dear friends.

Memorial services were held March 15 at Jesup First Baptist Church. A celebration of her life was held after the service at the family home on Odum Highway in Jesup.

Ruby Teston Johns St. Dennis

Jesup—Ruby Teston Johns St. Dennis, 91, of Jesup died peacefully at her home in the Red Hill community surrounded by her family.

A lifelong Wayne County resident, “Miss Ruby,” as she was often called, had a “larger-than-life” personality and positively influenced everyone around her, her family said. She enjoyed being the life of the party and the instigator of playful mischief. She was always ready to help those in need, and over the years many friends and relatives spent a few days, or a week, or a month, or several months at her home.

She co-founded Jesup Plate Glass in the 1950s and later owned a convenience store on Rayonier Road for more than 30 years.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Hubert Johns and Robert “Bob” St. Dennis; her daughter, Cathy Johns Robinson; and a granddaughter, Stacy Jones Ledbetter.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Tony (Jill) Johns of Lucinda, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Tristin (Stacey) Drury and Cobi (Matthew) Daniels, all of Jesup, Benjamin Johns of Lucinda, Pennsylvania and Anna Johns of Jacksonville, Florida; and several other relatives.

Funeral services were held March 18d at Rinehart Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Manning Jr. officiating. Interment followed in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers were friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of South Georgia, 1625 Sunset Blvd., Jesup, GA 31545.

Linda Napier Moseley

Jesup—Linda Napier Moseley, 77, of Jesup died March 14, 2025.

The Bacon County native had lived in Wayne County most of her life and was a Christian. She was retired from civil service in Fort Stewart and enjoyed crocheting, gardening, cooking and traveling.

Her grandchildren were the people she was most proud of, and she enjoyed doting on them, her family said.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Moseley; and her parents, Theron and Arlene Napier.

Survivors include two sons, Kevin (Madrae) Moseley of Odum and Kell (Teresa) Moseley of Jesup, and three grandchildren, Miles (Heather) Moseley, Blake (Cheyenne) Moseley, Brayden Moseley and Clark Sapp.

Funeral services were held March 17 at Rinehart Chapel with the Rev. Stanley Todd officiating. Interment followed in the Altamaha Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Miles Moseley, Blake Moseley, John Robinson, Ritchie Taylor, Liam Barwick and Roger Moseley.

Ann Kay Hilton Wohlgemuth

Jesup—Ann Kay Hilton Wohlgemuth, known to all as Kay, died on March 16, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, joy and faith.

Born on May 25, 1936, in Kershaw, South Carolina, to McA and Annie Belle Hilton, she grew up with a passion for learning, a quick wit and a heart full of kindness.

A proud graduate of Columbia College, she earned her degree in education and dedicated her life to teaching. She loved her role as a kindergarten teacher, finding immense joy in sparking a love for learning in young minds. In 1989, she was honored as Teacher of the Year—a testament to her dedication and impact. She retired from the Wayne County school system in 1998, leaving behind a legacy of countless students whose lives she touched.

She was known not only for her kindness and faith but also for her marvelous sense of humor and storytelling. She had a remarkable ability to entertain everyone within earshot, weaving tales that could light up a room with laughter. Whether she was reminiscing about her own adventures or playfully recounting family memories or tales from her classroom, her stories were filled with warmth and wit, leaving listeners with a smile on their faces.

Throughout her life, she embraced sunny optimism, always seeing the bright side, no matter the circumstances. Her positive outlook and unwavering belief in the goodness of life inspired everyone around her. She approached challenges with grace and joy, reminding those who knew her to find beauty in every moment.

She cherished time spent with her family, enjoying camping trips and travel adventures. She especially enjoyed summers in Myrtle Beach, where the salt air and ocean waves brought her endless joy. She firmly believed that the ocean could cure all that ailed you, and her love for the sea became a cornerstone of cherished family memories. Her older brother’s family loved the many weeks they spent together at the beach, creating bonds that will be forever treasured.

Her deep and unwavering faith in God was central to her life. She was a woman of prayer, encouragement and radiant happiness, sharing her love for life, fun and her family with everyone she met. Her smile was a beacon of warmth, and she cared deeply for those around her, always quick to offer support and kindness.

She shared 61 beautiful years of marriage with her husband, Dean Wohlgemuth, of Kansas, who preceded her in death. They provided a wonderful example of love for their family. She was also preceded in death by her parents, McA and Annie Belle Hilton, and her brother, Astor Ward Hilton.

Survivors include a loving family who will carry her memory in their hearts: her three children and their spouses, Warren and Jan Wohlgemuth, Cheryl and Jay Blevins, and Glenda and David Boone. She is also survived by her adoring grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

As a mother, she was fun-loving and full of delight in her children’s accomplishments. She made learning an adventure and filled her home with laughter and love. As a teacher, she cherished every child in her classroom and was grateful for the opportunity to guide them.

Her life was a testament to joy, faith and family. Her humor, her stories, her cheery optimism and her unshakable love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her, her family said, adding that she will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by everyone whose lives she enriched.

“May she rest in eternal peace, her smile, laughter and spirit shining down on us always. May all who knew her go forward with a piece of the sunshine she so graciously shared with us all,” her family said. 

Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. at Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Pete Boyd and the Rev. Dale Bange officiating. Interment will be in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be family. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Hospice of South Georgia and staff of At Home Assisted Living.

Family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of South Georgia, 1625 Sunset Blvd., Jesup, GA 31545.

Virginia B. Rentz

Jesup—Virginia B. Rentz, 82, of Jesup died March 16, 2025.

The Duval County, Florida, native had lived in Wayne County for the past 23 years and was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church. She enjoyed being a homemaker and pastor’s wife.

She was known for being loving, caring and encouraging and a prayer warrior. She loved to cook and bake, especially “sour dough” rolls.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Julie Agee.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Dr. Derrell Rentz, of Jesup; daughters, Sheryl (Dewayne) Herrin of Jesup, Kelley (David) Emig of Rogers, Arkansas and Karen (Kelly) Lewis of Lynchburg, Virginia; 20 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 22, at 11 a.m. at Red Hill Baptist Church with Pastor Alan Morgan and Missionary Barbara Hill officiating. Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be her family. 

Family will receive friends on Friday, March 21, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home.

Sissy Moxley May

Jesup—Sissy Moxley May, 57, of Jesup died on March 16, 2025.

The Wayne County native and 1985 Wayne County High School graduate and avid Yellow Jacket fan attended Jesup Church of God.

She was a former DFACS employee and substitute teacher for the Wayne County school system.

If you knew her, you knew she had the most infectious smile, personality and laugh, her family said. In her last years, she was a loving caregiver to her parents.

She was preceded in death by her father, Silas Moxley, and her nephew, Travis Moxley.

Survivors include a husband of 20 years, Gutt May of Jesup; a son, Dustin Moxley; twins, Cort and Charli May; her mother, Anna Lee Crosby Moxley; three brothers, George (Debbie) Moxley, Greg (Robin) Moxley and Wayne (Melissa) Moxley; nieces and nephews, Kacee (Wesley) Surface, Little Greg and Breezy Moxley, Zac (Grace) Moxley, Allie (Grayson) Thomas, Madison and Kadie Moxley; and several aunts, uncles, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services were held March 19 at Jesup Church of God with Pastor Scott Hatten, brother George Moxley and the Rev. Mark Ledbetter officiating. Interment followed in Sunset Memorial Oaks Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Kyle Owens, Russ Martin, Pat Carter, Michael Lewis and Wesley Stanfield. Honorary pallbearers were members of the 1985 Wayne County High School graduating class.

Verma Reddish Bennett

Jesup—Verma Reddish Bennett, 90, died peacefully on March 17, 2025, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

A native and lifelong resident of Wayne County, she was born on April 27, 1934, to the late Wiley Oran Reddish and Viola Ogden Reddish. In her early years, she worked at the Manhattan Shirt Factory before beginning a nursing career working on the surgical floor at Wayne Memorial Hospital for many years.

She was a longtime member of Trinity Baptist Church and enjoyed camping, reading and working puzzles in her spare time.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Floyd Bennett; a daughter, Gloria Crummey; sisters, Venita Wright and Vada Reddish; a brother, Cleveland Reddish; and a granddaughter, Rachelda Crummey.

Survivors include her daughter, Wylene (Mitch) Beverly of Odum; a sister, Vida Lane of Sterling; grandchildren, Jeremy (Yvette) Crummey of Jesup, Jay Crummey of Jesup, Whitney (Kevin) Hadlock of Jesup, Cheston (Karen) Beverly of Odum and Raven (Zamir) Hayes of Clovis, New Mexico; great-grandchildren, Brandon (Briana) Mullineaux, Noah Mullineaux, Madison (Dylan) Riendeau, Madilyne Greene, Maislee Greene, Maivree Greene, Kevin Hadlock, Kinslee McGauley, Carlin Ussery, Cotton Beverly and Huckleberry Beverly; great-great-grandchildren, William and Avery Mullineaux and Daxton and Magnolia Riendeau; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family members.

Graveside funeral services were held March 19 at Jesup City Cemetery with the Rev. Stanley Todd officiating. Active pallbearers were family.
