Willie “Glenn” Franklin

Jesup—Willie “Glenn” Franklin, 87, of Jesup died Jan. 22, 2022.

His ship sailed for the shores of Heaven and Sweet Beulah Land from his home, surrounded by his loving family, the family said.

He was the oldest living member of Fellowship Baptist Church. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and received the Good Conduct Medal.

He was predeceased by his brother, Carl Wolfe; his grandson, Glenn Garett Settles; and a brother-in-law, Rufus Anderson.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Dale Oliver Franklin of Jesup; two daughters, Glynis (Meddy) Settles of Jesup and Annisa (Greg) Feuz of Waynesboro; a son, Norman (Charlotte) Franklin of Jesup; grandchildren, Alana (Lance) Dykes of Guyton, Franklin Tatum, Madison Settles, Walker Franklin and Weston Franklin of Jesup; great-grandchildren, Raigan, Laynie and Emilee Tatum of Waynesboro; a sister, Barbara Anderson of Screven; and brothers, Earl (Diane) Franklin, Ronald (Debbie) Wolfe and Tommy (Katherine) Wolfe, all of Jesup.

Services to celebrate his life were held Jan. 26 from Fellowship Baptist Church with the Rev. David Bohannon officiating. A eulogy was given by his son, Norman Franklin. Interment services followed with a VA flag presentation with Mackey McReady at Thompson Family Cemetery.

Pallbearers were his brothers, Earl Franklin, Tommy Wolfe and Ronald Wolfe, and brother-in-laws, P.C. Oliver, Hilton Oliver and  Wilton Oliver. Honorary pallbearers were all men of Fellowship Baptist Church; Ranger Road Club members; Allen, Mike and Greg McBee; Michael Lewis; Ron Twilley; Jay Leggett; Mike Henderson; Georgia Hospice Care staff; Tonya McReady; Taylor Reddish; Kristen Cravy; chaplain Ron Wilson; and ResCare staff member, Elizabeth Evans.

Hilda Ann “Peachy” Lightsey Herrin

Jesup—Hilda Ann “Peachy” Lightsey Herrin, 81, of Jesup died on Jan. 23, 2022.

She was born on July 6, 1940, in Appling County, where she attended school and graduated from Appling County High School. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, sister-in-law and aunt.  She was a member of the Jesup Church of God, where she enjoyed being involved in many areas of ministry.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lawton Willis Herrin; parents, Kenneth and Gladys Lightsey;  and two sisters and brothers-in-laws, Eleanor “Pud” (William “Bill”) Turner and Peggy (Marvin) McIntyre, all of Baxley.

Survivors include three sons, Kenny (Renee’) Herrin of Jesup, Randy Herrin of Jesup and Scotty (LaShae) Herrin of Pooler; grandchildren, Brendan (Danielle) Herrin, Sarah Herrin and Blake Herrin, all of Jesup, Breanne (Caleb) Dawson of Tifton, andLawton Herrin of Pooler; great-grandsons, Abram Tate Herrin, Nolan Jude Herrin and Elijah Ray Dawson; a great-granddaughter, RaeAnne Leigh Dawson; a sister, Shirley Deen of Baxley; a sister-in-law, Jackie Hutchinson of Brunswick; a brother and sister-in-law, the Rev. Robert (Lisa) Herrin of Cleveland, Tennessee; and many nieces, nephews and special friends.

Private graveside services were held on Jan. 25 at Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Scott Hatten officiating.

Marie Leggett Wall

Jesup—Marie Leggett Wall, 72, of Jesup died Jan. 21, 2022.

The Wayne County native was a homemaker whose whole world revolved around her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles D. Wall Sr.; her parents, Lum and Estelle Leggett; a brother, Bobby Leggett; and a sister, Janice Leggett.

Survivors include her two daughters, Charlotte Wall and Crystal Lariscy, both of Jesup; four sons, Charles Wall Jr., Ronnie (Marianne) Harrison, Chris (Lyndsey) Harrison and Greg (Samantha) Leggett, all of Jesup; siblings, Mary (Richard) Waher, Wilma (Steve) Beverly, Donald Leggett, Billy (Nita) Leggett, Charles (Brenda) Leggett and Larry(Kay) Leggett, all of Jesup; 14 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Jan. 23 at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with Brother David Simmons officiating. Interment followed in  Odum City Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Greg, Timmy and Bobby Leggett, Gary Waher, Garrett Graham and Cody Powell.

Luther “Luke”

Norman King

Jesup—Luther “Luke” Norman King, 80, of Jesup died Jan. 23, 2022.

The LaGrange native had lived in Wayne County for the past four years and was a member and deacon of Bethany Baptist Church in Pine Mountain and was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

He was a retired superintendent with Langford Construction Company out of LaGrange. One of his favorite jobs was bringing the building out of the ground, especially the “Butterfly Center” in Callaway Gardens and the EMG Classic movie theatre. After retirement, his joy came with restoring vintage vehicles and enjoying outdoor nature.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Brenda H. King of Jesup; two sons, Huby (Mechelle) King of Pine Mountain and Christopher Pope of St. Simons Island; a daughter, Cassie Morris of LaGrange; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at the Bethany Baptist Church in Pine Mountain on Feb. 5 at p.m. with Pastor Mike Yarbrough officiating.

Family will receive friends one hour prior to services.

The family requests memorials be made to the Southeast Georgia Health System Foundation, Cancer Care Center, 2415 Parkwood Drive, Brunswick, GA 31520

Lela Collins Hunt

Aiken, South Carolina—Lela Collins Hunt, 80, beloved wife of Ronald A. Hunt, died Jan. 9, 2022, at Aiken Regional Medical Center.

She was born on March 15, 1941, in Pahokee, Florida. She was the daughter of the late Major David and Susie Hall Collins. She began her career as a certified medical technologist in Albany. She met her husband in Orlando, Florida. Once married, the couple have lived in Aiken since 1972.

She retired from her career as a former teacher’s aid in the fifth-grade science lab at Aiken Elementary. She was a member of Millbrook Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Ron Hunt; her son, Brian A. (Emily) Hunt of Lawrenceville; her daughter, Elise J. Hunt of Aiken; three grandchildren, Gabriel R. Hunt, Cooper A. Hunt and Caylee A. Hunt; and her sister, Dorothy (Charles) Hodges of Screven.

The family will receive friends and family Feb. 12 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Millbrook Baptist Church Chapel on Pine Log Road. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Clint Smith officiating. Interment will be in Southlawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org) or to Millbrook Baptist Church Building Fund.

Barry P. Flowers

Jesup—Barry P. Flowers, 64, died Jan. 16, 2022 at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah.

He was born Nov. 13, 1957, to Ben and Doris Williamson Flowers and lived in Jesup all of his life. He was one of 15 children. He was employed with Wayne County maintenance as a heavy equipment operator for the past 15 years. He was a certified welder and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a loving, caring husband and brother, his family said.

He was preceded in death by his parentsand a brother, James Flowers.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Gloria A. Flowers of Jesup; siblings, Ann Gratham of Jacksonville, Florida, Linda Rae of Bamberg, South Carolina, Johnnie (Audrey) Flowers of Jesup, Mary Beth Walling of Jesup, Georgia, Dennis (Sylvia) Flowers of Jesup, Kathy Lynn of Glennville, Nancy Griffin of North Carolina, Michael Flowers of Jesup, Terri Diller of Cochran, Russell Flowers of Louisiana, Thomas (Misty) Flowers of Jesup, Jennifer Baur of Jesup and Allison (Andy) Kicklighter of Jesup; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Jan. 23 at the Chapel of Brannen Kennedy Funeral Home with the Rev. Greg Smith and the Rev. Thomas Kelly officiating. Burial was in Pigott Branch Church Cemetery.        

Pallbearers were Derrell Bennett, David Bennett, Wesley Rogers, Timothy Walling, Greg Flowers and Brian Flowers.

Henry Lincoln Iverson Jr.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida—Henry Lincoln Iverson Jr., 74, died on Dec. 30, 2021 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, surrounded by loved ones in the comfort of his home.

He was born Aug. 4, 1947, in Jesup to the late Henry Lincoln Sr. and Iona Vaughns Williams. He was also the stepson of the late Warren T. Williams Sr.

He was educated in the Wayne County public school system. As a child, he was reared up attending Sunday school and church at St. James Holiness Church under the leadership of Mother Jonathan Green. He was affectionately known as “Audo” by some of his family and close friends.

He relocated to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in his early 20s and worked in the upholstery business, employed by his uncle Melvin Copeland at Mel’s Upholstery Shop. He gained valuable skills as a master upholsterer, which helped him to secure a position at the International Cushion Company for many years, until it went out of business. He discovered a new passion in life, working in the detailing business. He was known throughout Broward County for his meticulous, attentive work, making any automobile look sparkly-clean and new.

He also had a love for playing softball from his early childhood days. He would often be found on the baseball field. Friends and family say he will always be remembered for his left-handed throws and swings.

He joined the Gospel of Christ Ministry of Fort Lauderdale under the leadership of pastors Torrey and Keisha Phillips.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis Williams and Ulysses Norris Iverson; two sisters, Kathy Diane Iverson and Ireazetta Rankin; and a special friend, Virginia Kimble.

Survivors include one daughter, Keisha Phillips Torrey; two sons, Derrick (Latosha) Cheaton  and Jeremy Livingston; six granddaughters, Kateria, Torkecia, Torkiana, DeAijeah, LaTaijeah and Torkayla; five grandsons, Torrey Jr., Derrick Jr., Torvon, Malik and TreDerrick; 11 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Martha Jones, Mary Dickens, Helen Iverson-Ruise, Patsy (Clarence) Blake  and Melanesia Iverson; four brothers, Warren T. (Desherica) Williams Jr., Lanzy Williams, Ronald (Yvonne) Williams and Bruce Leon (Tarris) Iverson; two sisters-in-law, Audrey Williams and Rosetta (Gene) Little; a special aunt, Gloria Sead; a special uncle, pastor Melvin Copeland; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many other sorrowing acquaintances and friends.

A celebration-of-life service was held Jan. 8 at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Lauderdale with the Rev. Jimmy English officiating.
