Leonard “Len” M. Hauss

Jesup—Leonard “Len” M. Hauss, 79, of Jesup died on Dec. 15, 2021. 

The Wayne County native was a member of Jesup First Baptist Church and a 1960 graduate of Jesup High School, where he was a three-year Yellow Jacket letterman as a fullback, lineman and linebacker.

He chose the University of Georgia over a host of colleges and universities nationwide and played center for the Bulldogs. After college graduation, he played professional football with the Washington Redskins for 14 years. 

After retiring from sports, he continued his career in the banking industry.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Ida Hauss; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charlie and Claudia Johnson; and brothers-in-law, Johnny Johnson and Sherman Burch.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Janis Johnson Hauss of Jesup; a daughter, Lana (Dana) Snyder of Winder; two granddaughters, Jobie (Christian) Bailey of Maysville and Charlie-Len Snyder of Winder; a sister, Lenell Burch of Jesup; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Danny (Linda) Johnson of San Diego, California; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration-of-life service will be held Monday, Dec. 20, at 3 p.m. at Jesup First Baptist Church with Dr. Felix Haynes officiating. Private interment will be in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.

Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home of Jesup is in charge of arrangements.

 

Freddie Frye

Screven—Freddie Frye, 80, of Screven died Dec. 9, 2021.

The Tennessee native had lived in Wayne County most of his life. He was a member of Odum Baptist Church and attended Turning Point Worship Center with his family. He will be most remembered for his career as a broadcaster with WLOP in Jesup. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and keeping up with sports as he umpired many Wayne County recreation softball games.

His wife, Sue Ann Forehand Frye, preceded him in death.

Survivors include two sons, Gary (Mary) Frye of Screven and Mark (Amy) Frye of Jesup; four grandchildren, Kristina (Philip) DeLeGal, Garrett (Halie) Frye and Summer and Gracie Frye; two great-grandchildren, Ella Frye and Pat DeLeGal; a brother, Floyd Frye of Athens, Tennessee; and several loving nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services were held Dec. 11 in Liberty Cemetery with Pastor Justin Mitchell officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of South Georgia Building Fund, 1625 Sunset Blvd., Jesup, GA 31545.

Susie Verma Huff Sansom

Jesup—Susie Verma Huff Sansom, 93, of Jesup died Dec. 10, 2021.

The Wayne County native was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Faithful Friends Sunday School Class. The devoted follower of Christ and His church was also a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Graduating from Jesup High School, Class of 1945, she became a registered nurse for her lifetime career. In years past, she served at her beloved church in Hope Night Prayer Ministry; as director of discipleship training, leader and director of Women’s Missionary Union, and office relief; and on the finance committee and church council.

Her husband, J.D. Sansom, preceded her in death, along with her daughter, Toni Sansom; mother, Mary Lou Tillman Huff Sears; and sons-in-law, Wayne Poppell and Robert Cooper.

Survivors include two daughters, Joni Poppell of Guyton and Bonnie (Wayne) Burdette of Brunswick; grandchildren, Mandi (Matthew) Page, Josh (Elizabeth) Poppell and Caleb Poppell; great-grandchildren, Wyatt Page, Sadie Page and Grace Poppell; a sister, Cathy Ehlers; and several beloved cousins.

A celebration-of-life service was held Dec. 14 at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with Pastor Vann Dempsey officiating. Interment followed in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers were her family and friends.
