David N. “Bull” Cameron

Screven—David N. “Bull” Cameron, 86, died suddenly Nov. 4, 2021, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah.

A resident of Wayne County for most of his life, he was born on April 1, 1935, in Jesup to the late Clyde and Addie Coleman Cameron. He served his country in the United States Army and lived in California for a short period of time before moving back home to Wayne County, where he worked several different jobs over the years, including owning and operating his own pulpwood trucks.

A longtime member of Screven Baptist Church, he was a regular at the Crossroads Store for breakfast in the mornings, and he enjoyed spending time with his friends and family and watching television in his spare time.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy “Dot” Cameron, and his two brothers, Elbert Cameron and Clyde Cameron Jr.  

Survivors include his children, Tim Manning, Tina Manning, Mark Manning and Robbie Rogers, all of Jesup; a stepdaughter, Teri Hitt of Fullerton, California; sisters, Colleen Pye and Christine Mosley, both of Jesup, and Vivian (David) Edmondson of Inman, South Carolina; grandchildren, Blake Manning, Morgan Sahle, Maghan Warthan, Lexi (Spencer) Flowers, Mary Grace Manning and Shedrick Pass; great-grandchildren, Jaren Anderson, Lively Warthon, Mila Warthon, Grayson Flowers, Hudson Stanfield and McKenzie Flowers; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

Funeral services were held Nov. 7 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup with Durwood Miller officiating. Military honors were rendered by the United States Army.

Private interment services will be at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Russell Paul Ballard Jr.

Jesup—Russell Paul Ballard Jr., 71, died Nov. 4, 2021 at home under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

A resident of Wayne County for more than 30 years, he was born on Dec. 16, 1949, to the late Russell and Olive Flinchum Ballard.

He served his country in the United States Army, where he attained the rank of master sergeant. Having served in several different duty stations, including military installations in Germany and Korea, and also participating in Desert Shield and Desert Storm, he was awarded numerous awards and commendations, including the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal and the Kuwait Liberation Medal.

Upon retirement, he began a second career as an over-the-road truck driver, working most of the time for Schneider National, from which he retired in 2017.

He was a true “jack of all trades” and could fix almost anything, according to his family. When he was home and not working, he enjoyed resting and spending time with his beloved family.

In addition to his parents, his daughter, Christina Marie Ballard, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Mary G. Ballard of Jesup; one son, Russell Paul (Amy) Ballard III of Rineyville, Kentucky; two daughters, Kimberly Ann Green and Melissa Gail Ballard, both of Jesup; siblings, Carl (Sandy) Ballard, Betty Sue Reagan and Mark (Kim) Ballard, all  of Cincinnati, Ohio; grandchildren, Jared Mattocks, Christopher Ballard, Bryce Ballard, Thomas Jernigan, Valerie Green, Melissa Greene and Joshua Dean; great-grandchildren, Beau Jernigan, Amir Jackson and Adelina, Jojo and Arthur Ballard; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

Funeral services were held Nov. 10 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup with the Rev. Stanley Todd officiating. Military honors were rendered by the United States Army.

Interment will be private

Curtis C. Tatum

Screven—Curtis C. Tatum, 90, of Screven died Nov. 8, 2021.

The U.S. Army veteran and American Legion Post No. 311 member was a very faithful and active member of Ritch Missionary Baptist Church. The eldest church member was an ordained deacon and served on many committees. He was a retired brick mason who enjoyed farming on his family land and gardening.

Whenever you met him, he wanted you to know first and foremost that Jesus Christ was his Lord and Savior and his church was very important to him, his family said.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Bessie Tatum; two sisters, Mary Pierce and Aldine (Rudy) Crews; a great-grandson, Maddux Howard; a son-in-law, Barry Collier; and a brother-in-law, Royce Blalock.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Sonuya Tatum of Screven; five daughters, Karen Collier, Vickie Johnson, Lisa (Gary) Massey, and Della (Spud) Swain, all of Jesup and Lori (Wayne) Atkinson of Screven; two sons, Jammie (Mandy) Tatum and Eric (Lisa) Tatum, both of Screven; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Blalock of Waycross and Alva (Tommy) Barrow of New Bern, North Carolina; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. at Ritch Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Donnie Mullis, the Rev. Shon Cunningham and the Rev. Bryan Gill officiating. Interment will follow in Ritch Cemetery with military honors.

Active pallbearers will be his grandsons, Travis Denison, Leslie Griffis, Shawn Thornton, Franklin Tatum, Chad Tatum and Seth Swain.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
