Janie Ruth Miller Strickland

Jesup—Janie Ruth Miller Strickland, 85, of Jesup died Sept. 30, 2026.

The Wayne County native was a caregiver and friend to many.

She was predeceased by her parents, Green (Doc) Miller and Jessie Thomas.

Survivors include a son, Terry Solomon, of Jesup; a granddaughter, Sarah Ilcken of Jesup; and two sisters, Sarah Joyner and Sisie Marie Fielder, both of Jesup.

Memorial services will be held by the family.

Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

Geneva Brooker Goff

Jesup—Geneva Brooker Goff, 90, of Jesup died Oct. 2, 2026, under the care of Georgia Hospice Care.

The Wayne County native was a member of Spring Grove Freewill Baptist Church and worked many years as a cashier and an art teacher.

Her husband, Bill Goff, preceded her in death, along with brothers  Bobby, James and Leland Brooker and a sister, Juanita Lewis.

Survivors include a daughter, Anita “Niki” (Jeremy) Barwick of Jesup; a son, Greg Goff of Jesup; six grandchildren, Ryan, Ashley (Chris), Ramsey, Jared Goff and Emily, Warren and Lliam Barwick; great-grandchildren, Layla Jefferies and Georgia and Micah Ramsey; a sister, Shirley Simniok; a brother, Jerry (Ruby) Brooker; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Oct. 5 at Spring Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Tim Brantley officiating. Interment followed in Spring Grove Cemetery. Active pallbearers were family.

Helen Aspinwall

Scarborough

Odum—Helen Aspinwall Scarborough, 88, died peacefully on Oct. 4,2026, at home  surrounded by her family and under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

A native and lifelong resident of Wayne County, she was born on Oct. 12, 1937, to the late, Joe Ross Aspinwall and Nora Lee Carter Aspinwall. She was educated in the Wayne County school system, graduating from Odum High School in the class of 1956. 

She learned early in life that hard work pays off, and she devoted herself unselfishly to her family and to her employers over the years, working as a seamstress for Ashley Manufacturing where she earned awards several times for perfect attendance.

She loved cooking and was known to make the best coconut cake around. She was a longtime active member of the Odum Church of God where she learned to love her family and friends as Jesus did. She was always studying the scriptures and was known to praise God through any situation, her family said.

In her spare time, she stayed busy working in her flower garden, and she used her skills as a seamstress to upholster furniture and to make clothes for her children. She loved the Lord first and was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother, according to her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Carl E. Scarborough Sr.; her daughter, Deborah Scarborough Dean; a grandson, Phillip Bacon; and a sister, Doris Stephens.

Survivors include one daughter, Carla Thomas, and her fiancé, Richard Kamppi, of Bloomingdale; two sons, Carl (Vicki) Scarborough and Nathan (Amy) Scarborough of Odum; siblings, Vernon (Vivian) Aspinwall of Jesup, Bernice (Judy) Aspinwall of Jesup, Varney Aspinwall of Rincon, Joe Aspinwall of Odum, Aldean Kay of Jesup, Eloise Freeman of Jesup, Allene Nevil of Statesboro and Audrey (Wayne) Flowers of Jesup; grandchildren, Becky Patterson of Bloomingdale, Joey (Ericka) Scarborough of Odum, Brandon (Natalie) Scarborough of Louisiana, Tyler Thomas of Baxley, Alexis (Zack) Long of Odum, Nick (Taylor) Child of Odum, Tyler Child and companion, Maddie, of Jesup, Kami (Randy) Mobley of Odum, Zack Mallard of Odum and Clint (Christina) Mallard of Odum; a host of great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews and other extended-family members.

Funeral services were held Oct. 7 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup with Joey Scarborough and the Rev. Justin Moriarty officiating. Interment followed in Piney Grove Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Josh Flowers, Phil Kay, Wayne Aspinwall, Mike Aspinwall, Dustyn King, Nick Child and Brandon Scarborough. Honorary pallbearers were Tyler Child, Zack Long, Matthew King and Tyler Thomas along with the Adult Sunday School Class of the Odum Church of God.
