Dorothy Adele Langston Hires

Jesup—Dot Hires, 93, affectionately known as “Dot” or “Mrs. Dot,” died peacefully Oct. 3, 2024, at Hospice of South Georgia, surrounded by love.

She was born on May 9, 1931, in Jacksonville, Florida, to the late Julian Preston Langston and Dorothy Deforest Langston. She spent her early years in Jacksonville, graduating high school in 1948. She continued her education at Florida State University, where she was recipient of a bachelor’s degree and also the Phi Beta Kappa President’s Award.

She soon began her teaching career, where she taught English for one year at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville before taking a position working as an underwriter with Prudential Insurance for nearly 22 years. In June of 1967, she met and married the love of her life, her late husband, Robert Gordon Hires. The two relocated in 1975 to Jesup,  where his family owned farmland, and they raised cattle and produce.

After about two years, she gained her certification to teach in Georgia and began to pursue her first love—of teaching English—again at Wayne County High School, a career she would pursue until her second retirement in 1993.  During this time, she continued learning and earned a master’s degree from Georgia Southern University.  After her retirement, she and her husband enjoyed taking their produce to other towns to sell.

She was an avid reader who loved crossword puzzles and traveling.

A lifelong member of the Episcopal Church, she was a very active communicant of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where she served on the Altar Guild and ECW.  She served as a lector at the annual Diocean Conference for many years and was a part of the Pastoral Prayer Team. She enjoyed taking spiritual retreats and always loved centering prayer.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Langston; a stepson, Thomas Hires; and a stepdaughter, Martha Carmen Hires.

Survivors include her stepdaughter, Linda Hires (Vern) Quathamer of Jesup; a granddaughter, Dr. Colleen Lara; a grandson, Michael Lara; great-grandchildren, Brianna Kerridan, Preston Kerridan, Isaac Lara and Micaela Lara; great-great-grandchildren, Sedona and Slade Dunning and Solana Lara; and a host of extended-family members and great friends.

Mass of Christian burial was held Oct. 8 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Steve Larson, celebrant.

Interment followed in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Van Lamb, Chip Nance, Chuck Bennett and Cecil McDonald. Honorary pallbearers were Tommie Fuller, Charles Tootle, Denzil Fuller and Ernie Larson, members of the Wayne County Retired Educators, and her beloved caregivers, Julie, Nanci, Tammie, Shirley, Allene, Tanisha and Debbie.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 745 S. Palm St. Jesup, GA 31546.
