Tracy Thornton

Screven—Tracy Thornton, 89, of Screven died Nov. 18, 2025, in the Hospice of South Georgia Inpatient Unit.

The Wayne County native was a member of Jesup Church of God and a farmer at heart. In his later years, he worked for Tractor Supply in Jesup. Hard work was his greatest character attribute, and that came in handy on his daily farming chores, his family said.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Glinda Faye Horton Thornton and Lizzie Marie Ammons Thornton; his daughter, Lorrie Thornton; parents, Alma and Clyo Thornton; a sister, Glenice Thornton; two brothers, Colson and Phillip Thornton; and a stepson, Timothy Johnson.

Survivors include two sisters, Jeraldine “Jerry” Griffis of K’Ville and Barbara Blankenship of Alabama; three sons, Matt (Julie) Thornton, Robin (Sarah) Thornton and Travis (Wendy) Thornton, all of Screven; seven grandchildren, Michael (Ashonda) Thornton, Jeremy (Kate) Metts, Adam (Mary Nell) Thornton, Brody (Summor) Thornton, Maegan (Dustin) Mathis, Elisha (John) Davis and Lorren (Ricky) Hall; several great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild on the way, several nieces and nephews; stepchildren, Curtis (Beth) Johnson and Angela (Wade) Gill; and their families.

Graveside funeral services were held Nov. 21 in Screven City Cemetery with Pastor Scott Hatten officiating. Active pallbearers were his family.

The family received friends at the cemetery.

Nell Daniel Ormandy

Odum—Nell Daniel Ormandy, 89, of Odum died Nov. 23, 2025, under Hospice of South Georgia’s care.

The Wayne County native was a member of Odum Methodist Church and a 27-year retired Odum city clerk, where she was instrumental in writing several grants for the city. In her earlier years, she worked at Raytheon Missile Plant in California while her husband was stationed there in the Navy.

Her yard was her joy, along with some other hobbies, such as square dancing, cooking, especially pound cakes and sewing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther “Luke” and Rozzie Goff Daniel; several sisters, Ruth Daniel, Norma Jean Walker and Betty Daniel; and several brothers, Vernon Daniel, Jack Daniel and Luther Daniel Jr.

Survivors include her husband of 69 years, Robert “Bob” Ormandy of Odum; two sons, Robert “Robby” (Sherry) Ormandy Jr. of Shellman Bluff and Luther “Luke” (Jamie) Ormandy Sr. of Severna Park, Maryland; grandchildren, Mandy (Hugh) Dixon, Heather Ormandy, Sydney Ormandy, Rowan Ormandy and Luther Ormandy Jr.; great-grandchildren, Preslee, Madison, Jerrison, Willow and Oakley; and several nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services were held Nov. 25 at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with the Rev. Dale Bange and Dean Slusser officiating. Interment followed in Odum City Cemetery. Active pallbearers were family and friends. Honorary pallbearers were the Hospice of South Georgia staff.

Visitation will be held an hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Richard Wells “Dick” Galphin

Atlantic Beach, Florida—Richard Wells “Dick” Galphin, 96, of Atlantic Beach, Florida, died peacefully on Nov. 11, 2025. He was born on May 26, 1929, in Oriental, North Carolina.

He was very proud to have graduated from Georgia Tech in 1951 on an NROTC scholarship and served three years in the Navy during the Korean War and eight years in the Naval Reserves. He worked for Container Corporation in Fernandina Beach, Florida, for more than 30 years and Rayonier in Jesup for 10 years.

He met the love of his life on a blind date while at Georgia Tech, and they married July 21, 1951. They were best friends for more than 75 years.

He loved his family, most particularly his great-grandchildren. He delighted in watching the slide show of their pictures every day. He believed in service to his church and community. He served as lay leader and taught Sunday school at Memorial United Methodist Church and Jesup First United Methodist Church. He was a Rotarian for more than 50 years, served as president of the Wayne County American Heart Association and was treasurer of the Good Samaritan Food Bank Center in Jesup for more than 20 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Wells Galphin Sr. and Margaret Colvin Galphin; a sister, Mary Louise Galphin; and brothers, Robert Galphin and George Galphin.

Survivors include his loving wife of 74 years, Carolyn Montgomery Galphin; daughters, Gail Cook, Catherine Galphin, Margaret (Rob) Farrell; son, Richard (Dorothy) Galphin; grandchildren, Angela, Tamie, Tessie, Kristy and Sean; and great-grandchildren, Owen, James, Fiona, Calvin, Dylan, Asher, Reagan and Griffin.

A celebration-of-life service was held Nov. 22 at Christ United Methodist Church, Neptune Beach, Florida. Interment followed on Nov. 23 in Bosque Bello Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to BEAM, The Salvation Army, The Gideon’s International, Habitat for Humanity or Heifer International.
