Doyal E. Scoggins

Jesup—Doyal E. Scoggins, 92, of Jesup died Oct. 4, 2023.

The Florida native had lived in Wayne County the past 20 years and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Senior Adult Sunday School Class. He was a 20-year retired major in the U.S. Air Force. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and bee-keeping.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Scoggins, and a former wife, Fuji.

Survivors include his stepchildren, Thomas and Timothy Scott, both of Jesup, and John Smith and Connie; his sister, Faye Sheard; and three brothers, Marvin Scoggins, Lloyd Scoggins and Kenny Scoggins.

Memorial services will be held today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. from Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Vann Dempsey officiating.

Family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

Lois Holmes

Jesup—Lois Holmes, 90, of Jesup died Oct. 12, 2023, under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

The New York native had lived in Wayne County the past 43 years. She adored her pet cat, “Bella” and loved to receive and send greeting cards.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Gleyn Holmes; a sister, Shirley Freeman; and two brothers, Robert and Ansell Sweet.

Survivors include her daughter, Carole (Philip) Trumbull of Jesup; a son, Steven (Penny) Holmes of Lakeland, Florida; six grandchildren, Philip, Amanda (Travis), Jennifer, Tori and Joy Sue; five great-grandchildren, Savannah, Grant, Rayne, Erica and Melinda; a great-great-granddaughter, Alice; a brother, Larry (Sue) Sweet of Fort Myers, Florida; a special niece, Sally Grossman; and a special friend, Kathy Carter.

Private memorial services will be held by the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of South Georgia Building Fund, 1625 Sunset Blvd., Jesup, GA 31545.

Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

Lannie Manning Mathis

Jesup—Lannie Manning Mathis, 80, died Oct. 13, 2023.

The Wayne County native was the last charter member of Manningtown Church of God. The homemaker used her spiritual gift of testifying about the Lord and praying for anyone who needs it. She would stop wherever she was to intercede for her Christian brothers and sisters.

“Aunt Lannie,” as she was called by anyone who knew her, was a social butterfly who enjoyed visiting.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Roland Mathis; her son, Cliff; parents, Lester and Ione Manning; and a brother, Woodrow Manning.

Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Bennett of Jesup; two sons, Stanley Mathis of Jesup and Joe (Kay) Mathis of Jesup; grandchildren, Carl (Mindy) Mathis, Dustin (Meagean) Mathis, Brittany Bennett (Jeremy Roberson) and Cliff Bennett; a sister, Joyce Goss of Jesup; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Oct. 15 at Rinehart Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Manning Jr., the Rev. Joe Manning and Pastor Tim Fulmer officiating. Interment followed in Manningtown Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Carl, Dustin and Jakob Mathis, Cliff Bennett, Josh and Jeremy Goss, Zachary Peacock and Joseph Caleb Manning.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Manningtown Church of God, 33 Orman Street, Jesup, GA 31546.
