James Edward Darsey

Jesup—James Edward Darsey, 60, died Sept. 10, 2023 at home.

A native and lifelong resident of Jesup, he was born on Dec. 9, 1962, to the late Lee Edward and Mae Nettles Darsey. He worked as a maintenance man for most of his life and was a member of Midway Baptist Church.  In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, taking care of his chickens, and spending time with his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Johnny Darsey, and his sister, Lucy Mae Darsey.

Survivors include his brother Bennie (Pat) Darsey of Jesup; nieces and nephews, Kim (Mike) Dixon, Joe (Cindy) Thompson, Clyde Thompson and Gordon (Glenda) Brooker; and a host of other extended family members.

Memorial services will be private.

Dana Renee Cox

Jesup—Dana Renee Cox, 55, died Sept. 15, 2023, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah after a lengthy illness.

A native and lifelong resident of Wayne County, she was born on June 12, 1968. She worked several different jobs throughout her lifetime—cooking, waiting tables and cleaning.  Her carefree spirit and selfless nature made her a joy to be around, and she treasured the time she spent with her loved ones, especially her grandchildren. In her spare time, she loved cooking, yard sales, thrift stores and listening to music.

She was preceded in death by her father, Herman Theo Winn; a sister, Deborah Winn Smith; and a grandson, Jayden McCorkel.

Survivors include her three children, Dustin (Ashley) Cox, Kelli (James) McCorkel, and Harlie Baker and companion Dustin, all of Jesup; her mother, Helen Winn of Jesup; grandchildren, Tanner and Remington Cox, Brylee McCorkel, Paisley and Palmer Grayson, Paxton Baker and Dustin Spivey Jr.; a sister, Lisa Smith of Screven; a brother, Sam Gordon of Screven; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

Funeral services were held September 19 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup with the Rev. Justin Drawdy officiating.

Interment followed in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Kaden Mallard, Konner Priester, Dalton White, Jason Priester, Trenton Smith and Greg Leggett.

Mildred “Sister” Lane Anderson

Jesup—Mildred “Sister” Lane Anderson, 90, of Jesup died Aug. 26, 2023, as the first patient at the new Hospice of South Georgia inpatient unit in Jesup.

She loved Jesus and attended Remember the Cross Ministries. She was a loving mother, grandmother and sister. Her “love language” was serving her family and giving to all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, C.I. Anderson; her daughter, Sue Anderson; and two brothers, Elmer and George Lane.

Survivors include two sons, Allan (Lydia) Anderson of Jesup and Mark (Jan) Anderson of Lilburn; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, A.W. (Becky) Lane and Kenny (Brenda) Lane; three sisters, Lora (Jimmy) Dowdy, Janet Evors and Joan Kennedy; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. 

Funeral services were held Aug. 29 at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with the Rev. Elliott Aspinwall officiating. Private interment was in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery.

Dayla Proctor Bunton

Jesup—Dayla Proctor Bunton, 64, of Jesup died Sept. 16, 2023.

The Pierce County native and 1977 Camden County High School graduate had lived in Wayne County for most of her adult life and was a Baptist. She was employed with Martha Rawls Smith Elementary School.

Her father, Royce Hubert Proctor, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her companion, Jerry Gray Sr.  of Jesup; her mother, Iona Johns Proctor of Brunswick; daughters, Christina Lynch, Danielle Jones and Iona Rooks, all of Jesup; two sons, John Bunton and Jerry Gray Jr., both of Jesup; two brothers, Royce Proctor of St. Marys and Ben Proctor of Albany; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. in the New Hope Cemetery in Hickox with the Rev. Dale Bange officiating.

Brian McEachin

Jesup—Brian “Binky” McEachin, 53, of Jesup passed died Sept. 17, 2023.

The Indiana native had lived in Wayne County most of his life and attended Turning Point Ministries. He loved to play golf with his father and watch basketball.

He was preceded in death by his fiancé, Nikki Ellis; his grandparents, Grover and Odell McEachin and Keith and Edna Mae Forrer; and a special uncle, Gerald McEachin.

Survivors include his parents, Grover “Mac” and Beth McEachin of Jesup; a brother, Ryan Heath (Nikki Thomas) McEachin of Buford; a niece, Taylor; a nephew, Peyton; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services were held Sept. 20 at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with Pastor Justin Mitchell officiating. Interment followed in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers were family and friends.

Farrel “Keith” Westberry

Jesup—Farrel “Keith” Westberry, 69, of Jesup died  Sept. 17, 2023.

The Wayne County native was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, a jack-of-all-trades and a musician in his community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Inez Westberry, and his brother, Fred Westberry.

Survivors include his daughter, Kerry McDuffie of Jesup; his son, Kristopher Westberry of Jesup; a twin sister, Karen (Ken) O’Neal of Middleburg, Florida; a brother, Ernie (Teresa) Westberry of Jesup; grandchildren, Chandler, Audrey, Gabriel and Amelia; and a great-grandchild, Blakleigh.

Memorial services are being held by the family in Little Creek Cemetery.

Bonnie L. Ham

North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina—Bonnie L. Boatright Bryant Gordon Ham, 91, of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, died Sept. 12, 2023, at the Legacy of North Myrtle Beach Nursing Home in North Myrtle Beach.

Born in Alma on May 20, 1932, she had lived in Screven for many years prior to moving to North Myrtle Beach to be near her son. She attended Patterson High School.

She taught preschool at Bayvale Baptist Church in Augusta prior to working for the Wayne County Board of Education as a paraprofessional.

Her later years were spent as a homemaker. A true Southern belle, she always kept an immaculate home and yard, which she took great pride in. She had enjoyed traveling and loved being a grandmama to all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

While living in Screven, she had been a member of the Screven Baptist Church, where she was in the Senior Ladies Sunday school class. The last several years, she had been a member of First Baptist Church of North Myrtle Beach. 

She was a daughter of the late Earl and Lula Mae Davis Boatright. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Marvin Bryant; her second husband, Curtis Gordon; her third husband, Joe Ham; a son, Marvin “Butch” Gordon; six of her brothers, Robert, Joe, Runt, Sam, Earl Jr. “Baby” and Bobby Boatright; and two sisters-in-law, Juanita Boatright and Delores Boatright.

Survivors include two sons, Artemus “Arte” Gordon of North Myrtle Beach and Donald (Kay) Ham of Covington; a daughter, Melissa Ham of Screven; a daughter-in-law, Alice Gordon of Charleston, South Carolina; four sisters, Wannie Mae (Talmadge) Metts of Bristol, Sheila (Cebbie) Smith of Mershon, Judy (Leon) Allen of Alma, and Paula (Norman) McMinns of Lake Placid, Florida; a brother, Mack (Debbie) Boatright of Blackshear; two sisters-in-law, Sandra (Cleve) Henderson of Blackshear and Janet Boatright of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina; six grandchildren, Christopher Gordon (Tess Martin), Brittany (Bruce) Murray, Reese (Colleen) Gordon, Scott Stanfield, Patrick Ham and  Lydia (Matt) Allen; eight great-grandchildren, Cooper, Margo, Kamryn, Cade, Claire, Ethan, Hank and Evy; two great-great-grandchildren, Ash and Hudson; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Sept. 18 from the Pearson-Dial Chapel with Brother Durwood Miller officiating.

Interment was in Pinecrest Cemetery in Jesup.
