Glenda Poppell

Jesup—Glenda Poppell, 72, of Jesup died April 23, 2024.

She was a Wayne County native who enjoyed worshipping at Grace Assembly of God. She always enjoyed working at Poppell’s Produce, Nang’s Restaurant and Walmart. She was part of a large, loving family, and in her spare time, she enjoyed spending time with them.

She was predeceased by her parents, Hyma and Thelma Page Poppell, and brothers, Wayne Poppell and Rick Poppell.

Survivors include sisters, Irene Kirkland and Barbara (Richard) Bennett both of Jesup, Betty (Don Bitter) Cason of Hilton Head, South Carolina, Carol (James) Brown of Jesup, Judy (William) Rozier of Jesup and Sandra (Steve) Dickens of Jesup; brothers, Dennis (Martha) Poppell of Odum, Jerry (Shirley) Poppell of Odum, and Genell (Tanya) Poppell of Odum; sisters-in-law, Cathy Poppell of Jesup and Joni Poppell of Guyton; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family.

Funeral services were held April 26 at Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dale Bange officiating. Family received friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Interment was in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery.  Active pallbearers were her nephews. Honorary pallbearers were staff members of Hospice of South Georgia.

She requested memorials be made to her church, Grace Assembly of God, 2324 Rayonier Road, Jesup, GA 31545.

Larry Parks Collins Sr.

Jesup—Larry Parks Collins Sr., 85, of Jesup died April 24, 2024, under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

He was a member of Jesup First United Methodist Church and a retired ITT Rayonier supervisor in the power house.

He enjoyed woodworking after retirement and had an interest in 18-wheeler trucks.

He was predeceased by his wife, Charlotte Hires Collins; his parents, Ralph and Hazel Parks Collins; and a brother, Don Collins.                                             

Survivors include his sons, Larry P. Collins Jr. of Jesup and Rusty Collins of Screven; grandchildren, Cody, Larry P. III, and Hanna Collins (Logan) Anderson, all of Jesup; and several nieces, nephews  and cousins.

Celebration-of-life services will be held today (Thursday) at 5 p.m. at Jesup First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rebecca Duke-Barton officiating.

The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to services at the church.

Jackie Johnson Perkins

Odum—Jackie Johnson Perkins, 90, of Odum died April 29, 2024, under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

The Patterson native was a faithful servant of Odum Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities. She was a retired Southern Bell telephone operator and also retired from Jesup Manor Nursing Home. She was predeceased by her husband, Jimbo Perkins, and seven siblings.

Survivors include two daughters, Marcia Mathison of Valdosta and Sarah (John) Zaruba of Palatka, Florida; three sons, Matt (Sarah) Mathison of Folkston, Bill (LuAnn) Mathison of Odum and James Perkins of Odum; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several beloved nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held May 1 at Odum Baptist Church with the Rev. Stanley Todd and Linda Moseley officiating. Interment followed in Odum City Cemetery. Active pallbearers were grandchildren.

Dale Bennett Lamb

Jesup—Dale Bennett Lamb, 75, of Jesup died April 29, 2024, under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

The Wayne County native was a member of Little Creek Baptist Church and attended Calvary Baptist Church. She was a consultant for Harrelson and Associates. She enjoyed kayaking on the Altamaha River and going to the beach as favorite pastime activities. She also loved fashion, as she co-owned Benets’ Clothing Store and modeled for several clothing stores. 

She was predeceased by her godparents, Donald and Ruth Horton; her parents, Gerald Richard and Juanita Landon Bennett; her son, Dean Thompson Jr.; a sister, Kay Geiger; and a brother, Alan Bennett.

Survivors include her son, Jody Thompson and his father, Dean Thompson Sr. of Jesup; grandchildren, Brooke (Keith) Kinna of Jesup, Dylan Thompson of Screven, Madison (Daniel) Darden of Jesup; great-grandchildren, Katee, Kennedy, Maxen and Docton; a sister, Fran Palmer; a brother, Ricky (Patty) Bennett; companion, David Harrelson, of Jesup; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Graveside services were held May 1 from Little Creek Cemetery with the Rev. Vann Dempsey and Hospice Chaplain Ryan Wilson officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of South Georgia, 1625 Sunset Blvd, Jesup, GA 31545 or Augusta Burn Center, 3614 J. Dewey Gray Circle, Building C, Augusta, GA 30909.

Beth Ammons

Jesup—Beth Ammons, 30, died suddenly April 24, 2024, in Jesup.

She was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, to Dwayne Edward Ammons and Virginia Gail Jones Ammons. She was a 2012 graduate of Wayne County High School and former assistant manager of Cato’s in Jesup. She was employed as a receptionist at Elite Primary Care in Waycross.

In her spare time, she enjoyed camping, going to theme parks  and just being outdoors.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Thomas and Betty Ammons.

She is survived by her fiance’, Lee Hall, of Jesup; her parents, Dwayne and Gail Ammons of Jesup; a sister, Alyssa Ammons of Jesup; grandmother, Shalimar Ludwig of Elloree, South Carolina; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Riley “Bossy” Hall and Missy Hall of Jesup; her beloved dogs, Lyla, Walker and Roscoe; and numerous cousins and other relatives.

A memorial service was held April 28 at Music Funeral Home Chapel. Memorialization will be by cremation.
