Brenda Ann Tippins Leggett

Jesup—Brenda Ann Tippins Leggett, 66, of Jesup died March 27, 2024, surrounded by her family.

The Wayne County native was a Baptist and former employee with Wayne Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed gardening, NASCAR racing and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents, Lawrence and Nell Tippins.

Survivors include her husband, Charlie Leggett of Jesup; two daughters, Amy (Jeff) Meguiar of Colonial Beach, Virginia, and Donna Groover of Jesup; sisters, Vicki Brown (and special friend Tony Brigdon) and Linda Carter, all of Jesup; six grandchildren, Colby, Chelseah, Bradley, Abby, Eric and Derrick; a great-grandson, Oliver; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services were held March 29 in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Dale Bange officiating.

Memorials are requested to Hospice of South Georgia, 1625 Sunset Blvd., Jesup, GA 31545.

Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

 

Mary Elizabeth Johnson Duncan

Jesup—Mary Elizabeth Johnson Duncan, 94, died peacefully on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024, at Harborview Nursing Home under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

She was born June 10, 1929, to Lester and Annie Lee Beaver Johnson in Cherokee County. She had lived in Wayne County since she was an infant and was the oldest surviving member of Flint Branch Baptist Church, where she attended faithfully until her health started to fail. She was cared for faithfully in her home by her sons before suffering a fall recently and being placed under hospice care.

She was a former employee of Manhattan Shirt Factory and was retired from B.C. Moores, where she began working on its opening day in 1984. She was an excellent seamstress, taking pride in many garments she made for herself.

She was an exceptional cook and was well-known for her macaroni and cheese and blueberry delight at church potluck meals. She enjoyed growing a garden and canning her own vegetables. She thoroughly enjoyed fishing in her back yard pond and having family over for a fish fry.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a granddaughter, Miranda Anderson; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Anderson; two sisters, Dorothy Tyre and Jean Jackson Pope; and three brothers, J.T., David Earl, Isham “Buddy” Johnson, all of Jesup.

She is survived by three sons, Dwane (Sarah) Anderson, Roger (Dale) Anderson and Rex (Terry) Anderson, all of Jesup; grandchildren, April (Steve) Dixon of Jesup, Kade (Kristy) Anderson of Odum, Evan (Sharla) Anderson of Waycross, Allen Anderson and Shelby (Cliff) Hudson of Jesup, and Mary (Chris) Pickering of Enid, Oklahoma; great-grandchildren, Dake and Hallie Dixon, Kyler Anderson, Emily, Kayleigh, Brylee and Barrett Hudson of Jesup, Kadie and Kaycee Anderson of Odum, Asher Anderson, and Kencie and Khole Boyette of Waycross; a sister, Rose NeSmith of Nevils; a brother, Charles Johnson of Jesup; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held April 2 from Flint Branch Baptist Church with Pastor Scott Hickox officiating. Interment will follow in Flint Branch Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews, Kade, Evan, and Allen Anderson, Dake Dixon, Thomas Tyre, David Johnson, Robert and Donnie Dixon. Honorary pallbearers were members of the staff of Hospice of South Georgia.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be made to Flint Branch Baptist Church, c/o Tracy Smith, 7755 GA Highway 203, Screven, GA 31560.

Jerry Lester Bowen

Florida—Jerry Lester Bowen of Florida died unexpectedly March 4, 2024.

He was born Oct. 13, 1970. He was a truck driver for 25 years and saw most of the United States. “Even though his life was shortened, he will never be forgotten. He will always be loved,” his family said.

He was predeceased by his grandparents, Rufus Lester and Doreen Bowen and Benny and Vesper Landon.

He is survived by his parents, Richard and Frances Etwendil Bowen, both of Wayne County; his wife of 25 years, Sabrina Bryan Bowen of Florida; three children, Seth Bryan, Dayton Bowen and Chasity Bowen; four grandchildren, Alec Hires, Logan Keiffer, Korben Keiffer and River Bowen; and two brothers, Marcus (Sandy) Bowen of Waynesville and Lee Bowen of Odum.

No arrangements have been made at this time.
