Jon Carlton Phillips

Jesup—Jon Carlton Phillips, 77, died peacefully on March 11, 2023, at Altamaha Healthcare Center in Jesup under the care of GHC Hospice.

He was born on Aug. 7, 1945, in Los Angeles, California, to the late Sam and Rosalie Begovac Phillips. He spent his early years in Detroit, Michigan, where he graduated from Western High School as an All-City pitcher for the baseball team. He also lived several years in Manhattan Beach and San Diego, California, before moving to Jesup many years ago.

He loved life, and he lived it to the fullest, his family said. Golf was his passion and he was an expert.  He shared his knowledge with others while working at Pine Forest Country Club in Jesup.

He loved cooking, motorcycles and working with his hands. He was artistic in nature, and his creativity with wood was impressive. His friends and family cherished the treasures he created for them. He had a quick wit and a sense of humor that was second to none.

Survivors include his two children, Poppie Phillips of Atlanta and Jason Phillips of Oxnard, California; two siblings, Janice Phillips of Atlanta and Jim Phillips of Valencia, California; a niece, Heather (Isaac) Phillips-Choi; a great-niece, Isla Rose; and a longtime special friend, J.C. Smith, and wife, Susan, of Ludowici.

Celebration-of-life services will be held within the next year in California.

Duncan “Bing” Crosby

Jesup—Duncan “Bing” Crosby, 80, of Jesup died March 11, 2023.

The Wayne County native and U.S. Army veteran was a member of O’Quinn Baptist Church and a retired carpet cleaner. He enjoyed cooking and visiting with friends.

He was preceded in death by his two sons, Terry and Jimmy; a grandson, Chad Herrin; and three brothers,  W.D. Crosby, Carl Curry and Eldon Curry.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Bobbie Robertson Crosby of Jesup; two daughters, Teraina (Jerrid) Ragsdale of Offerman and Kimberly Crosby of West Virginia; a son, Benji Crosby of Jesup; stepsons, Pete (Donna) Reid and Joe (Angie) Reid; three stepdaughters, Angie Seyler, Rebecca Hires and June (Gary) Colley; a sister, Jeanette Trapnell of Sunset, South Carolina; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held March 15 at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with Chaplin Ryan Wilson officiating. Interment followed in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery with military honors. Active pallbearers were his family.

Ben “Odis” Waldron Sr.

Jesup—Ben “Odis” Waldron Sr., 83, of Jesup died March 12, 2023.

The Pierce County native had lived in Wayne County most of his adult life. He was a member of Northside Bible Baptist Church and a sewing machine mechanic for 51 years. He also worked with his wife at Waldron’s Grocery Store. He enjoyed NASCAR racing and spending time with his family, especially as “Papa O.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmy and Lois Waldron, and his siblings, Marvin, Melvin, Bill, Donnie and Rosa.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Ann “Dot” Pittman Waldron of Jesup; two sons, Benny (Tina) Waldron and Keith (Alicia) Waldron; an adopted-in-love son, Jeff Richardson; sisters, Mamie Dryden, Linda (Randall) Hickox, Marilyn Jordan, Geraldine Mixon and Ocie (Joe) Worthington; brothers, Charles (Ruby) Waldron, Clifford (Mary Lou) Waldron and George (Tonja) Waldron; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held March 14 at Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with Benny Waldron and Pastor Anthony Hipps officiating. Interment followed at Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers were Brett Waldron, Justus Kidd, Phillip Kidd, Joe Chandler, Will Morris and Chance Horne. Honorary pallbearers included the staff of Bayview Nursing Home.

Dewanna Hardee

Jesup—Dewanna Hardee, 87, of Jesup died on March 12, 2023.

The Pierce County native was a member of Spring Grove Freewill Baptist Church. She loved to do yard work, fish and being “little grandma” to her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Coolidge Hardie; her daughter, Wanda Faye Blanton; a brother, Alvernon Smith; and a sister, Beulah Combs.

Survivors include two daughters, Gerene Dixon of Bowling Green, Kentucky and Charlotte Cason of Screven; a sister, Darlene Carter of Jesup; a brother, Franklin Smith of Gardi; six grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with the Rev. Randy Pruitt officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Grove Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be her family.

Visitation will be held an hour prior to services at the funeral home.
