Sandra Mills Brooker

Jesup—Sandra Mills Brooker, 80, of Jesup died on Oct. 17, 2022.

The Appling County native had lived in Wayne County most of her life and was an active member of Anderson Drive Baptist Church and former secretary of Anderson Drive Baptist Church. Some favorite pastimes were gardening, fishing and spoiling her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Doug Brooker; her parents, Spurgeon and Helen Mills; and a sister, Anita Glenza.

Survivors include a daughter, Laurie (Hal) Roby of Keysville; two sons, Fred (Tammy) Anderson and Bret (Micki) Brooker all of Jesup; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Oct. 20 at Anderson Drive Baptist Church with Pastor Dustin Cribbs officiating. Interment followed in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers were her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Anderson Drive Baptist Church, Light of Life Missions Inc., P.O. Box 1604, Jesup, GA. 31598.

Martha Lee Brannen Moseley

Jesup—Martha Lee Brannen Moseley, 75, of Jesup died Oct. 20, 2022.

The Glynn County native and 1964 graduate of Jesup High School was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and the Adult Sunday School Class.

When she wasn’t at home on her porch reading, drinking coffee and playing solitaire, she could be found at the fish camp on Crescent Lake in Florida, where she would spend time chatting, drinking coffee and visiting with neighbors.

Before her late husband passed, they enjoyed fishing, cookouts, visiting area events and spending time with family, grandchildren and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Cary Moseley; her parents, Carrie Manning Sapp and Jessie William Brannen Sr.; and several siblings.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Angie and Wally Bishop of Jesup; two sons and a daughter-in-law, John and Jennifer Bollinger of Jesup and Cary G. “Doodle” Moseley Jr. of Jesup; an adopted son, Ethan King of Hot Springs, Arkansas; eight grandchildren, Travis and Deanna Bishop, Chloe and Sophie Bollinger, Katie Moseley, Austin and Ethan Kernes, Trevor Oglesbee and Justice Bourgoin; two sisters, Debbie Brannen (Dan) Klymshyn and Susie Brannen (Jimmy) Dixon of Surrency; a brother, J.W. (Marilyn) Brannen of Phenix City, Alabama; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held Oct. 24 at Fellowship Baptist Church with Pastor Timothy McBee officiating. Interment was in Flint Branch Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Richard and Ricky May, Danny Chavez, James Carver, Daniel and Daryn Klymshyn. Honorary pallbearers were members of her church family of Fellowship Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fellowship Baptist Church, 3730 Waycross Hwy., Jesup, GA 31545.

Roy Lavern “R.L.” Poppell

Odum—Roy Lavern “R.L.” Poppell, 83, of Odum died Oct. 17, 2022.

The Wayne County native was a member of the Bethlehem Wesleyan Church. He enjoyed playing the piano and working with the music ministry.

He worked for many years managing Poppell Motors. He was a U.S. Army veteran, proudly serving in Okinawa with the National Security Agency.

He was an avid gardener and loved being a “granddaddy.”

He was predeceased by his parents, Nathan and Lois Poppell; and a daughter, Lisa Poppell.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Doug (Paige) Poppell of Greensboro; three granddaughters, Dr. Katie Hollowoa of Little Rock, Arkansas, Emily Poppell of Dallas, Texas and Amanda Poppell of Charleston, South Carolina; a brother, Nathan Elbert Poppell of Odum; and two nieces and two nephews.

Private memorial services are being held by his family.

Carolyn Arnold Harris

Jesup—Carolyn Arnold Harris, 80, of Jesup died on Oct. 25, 2022.

She was born in Ridgeland, South Carolina, but lived most of her life in Wayne County. She was a member of Screven Baptist Church and graduated from Warren A. Candler School of Nursing in 1963. Being a nurse allowed her to care and see about others, which was her passion. She loved to entertain her family and friends. She was the happiest when her house was full, her family said.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Vonetta Arnold; her husband, Ernest Bill Harris Jr.; and her son, Ernest William “Trey” Harris III.

Survivors include her daughters, Pam (Mark) Williams of St. Simons Island and Kim (Craig) Sims of Jesup; four granddaughters, Mary Katelyn (Troy) Bland of St. Simons Island, Miranda (Alex) Bradford of Macon, Cara Laine (Patrick) Riley of Suwanee and Kenzlee Sims of Jesup; two sisters, Rosie (Bobby) Miller and Linda Fennell of Jesup; one brother, Jimmy Arnold of Jesup; and five great-grandchildren who were the apples of her eye.

A celebration-of-life service will be held today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. at Rinehart Chapel with Joey Fennell officiating. Family will receive friends an hour before the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Trey Harris Scholarship, 6330 Odum Screven Road, Jesup, GA, 31545.

Norma Irene Goodson

Odum—Norma Irene Goodson, 81, died suddenly on Oct. 22, 2022 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

A resident of Wayne County for the past 21 years and former resident of Atlanta and Wyaconda, Missouri, she was born on Aug. 31, 1941, in Iowa to the late George H. and Orion Smith Swinderman.

She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother.   She loved her family and devoted herself to them unselfishly. When her children were young, she stayed home to care for them. The family moved quite frequently, as military families often do, throughout her husband’s military career including appointments in Germany and Italy.

Later in life, she worked as an assistant budget officer with the Georgia Department of Agriculture. She loved doing crafts and sewing in her spare time. She stayed busy gardening and piddling around the house. Her cookies were world-renowned amongst her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two sons, Mark Earl Goodson and Mathew Guy Goodson; and her two brothers, Guy Richard Swinderman and George H. Swinderman.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, James Nelson Goodson of Odum; three children, Michele Elaine Hudson of Carrollton, Michael Edward (Pam) Goodson of Odum and Penny Joyce (Tim) Bohannon of Crowley, Texas; one sister, Judy (Elmer) McElhinney of Unionville, Missouri; grandchildren, Jennifer Michelle Payton, Rochele Leann Hugeley, Christopher Michael Goodson, James Mathew Goodson, Jonathon David Goodson, Timothy Patrick Bohannon, Stephanie Diane Bogert and Taylor Irene Bohannon; great-grandchildren, Frances Ellen Michele Payton, Michael Judson Payton, Samuel Lee Hudson, Tatum Lucas Hudson, Abbigail Rene Goodson, Christopher Michael Goodson Jr., Hailey Anna Goodson, Michael Dylan Goodson, Isabelle Elaine Goodson, Huxley Reign Goodson, Adeleine Claire Bogert, Caleb Patrick Bohannon, Audrey Grace Bohannon, Eleanor Rose Bogert and Evelyn Rose Bogert; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.

Memorial services will be private.

E. Ricky Souza

Jesup—E. Ricky Souza, 62, died suddenly Oct. 24, 2022, at Memorial Health University in Savannah.

A native and lifelong resident of Wayne County, he was born on Feb. 2, 1960 to the late E.A. and Mary Ruth Buckley Souza.

He was a member of the Wayne County High School graduating Class of 1978 and worked as a self-employed diesel mechanic for more than 40 years. His years of experience had paid off, and he was one of the best at his trade.

In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing, and he was a lifelong drag-racing enthusiast and member of Little Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Lisa Priester Souza of Jesup; five children, Reggie, Amanda, Lydia, Ricky and Patrick Souza all of Jesup; two sisters, Julie Carter and Tina Sapp, both of Jesup; 10 grandchildren, Harley, Mary, Tucker and Tristan Souza, Madelyn Hewitt, Tony Ramos, Trenton and Ashton Souza, Emerson McGahee and Kylan Souza; two great-grandchildren, Zaedon and Jayden Souza; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.

Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. at Little Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Rooster Manning officiating. 

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jason Priester, Grant Lewis, Trenton Smith, Jamie Blanchard, Brian Vickers and Weston Guest.
