Ray Doyle House

Jesup—Ray Doyle House, 59, of Jesup, died May 27, 2023.

The Glynn County native had lived in Wayne County the past 33 years and has been a City of Jesup commissioner for several terms, beginning in 1995. He attended Brewton- Parker College, earned an associate’s degree, and pursued a career in his earlier life as a City of Brunswick police officer.

He later married and moved to Jesup, where he was with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, was a trained fireman, and held a working friendship with the Jesup Fire Department and many of the current and retired staff.

His favorite pasttime was enjoying golf with his many friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife, DeLisa House, and his parents, Raymond and Betty House. 

Survivors include a host of cousins, friends and supporters.

Funeral services were held May 30 at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with the Rev. Stanley Todd officiating. Interment was in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. His many law enforcement and firefighting friends served as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to Hospice of South Georgia, 1625 Sunset Blvd. Jesup, GA 31545.

Neal Henry Lynn

Jesup—Neal Henry Lynn, 59, of Jesup died May 28, 2023.

The Wayne County native was a former truck driver and plumber. He enjoyed motorcycle riding and working on classic Chevrolets.

He was predeceased by his parents, Jasper and Vernice Bunton Lynn; and a brother, Jack Lynn.

Survivors include two sisters, Toni Frawley of Jesup and Barbara Lynn of Dublin; two nieces, Gina and Cher; a nephew, Craig; and several cousins.

Memorial services are being held by his family.

Charles “Mann” Harvey

Odum—Charles “Mann” Harvey, 81, of Odum died May 24, 2023.

The Wayne County native was a Christian and attended Piney Grove School and graduated from Odum High School. He held many jobs, including auto sales and vinyl tops. He always enjoyed his “gift of gab” with many family and friends. Shrimping and fishing were favorite pasttimes as well as old Westerns, but he greatly enjoyed being “Pop-Pop” to his grands.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Tyre Harvey; mother, Willie Mae Warren Harvey; father, William Jasper Harvey; and brother, Warren Harvey.

Survivors include a daughter, Leisha (David) Martin of Odum; three sons, Michael (Terri) Harvey of Odum, Randy Harvey of Jesup and Joey Harvey of Athens; grandchildren, Zach and Josh Martin, Chasity and Garrett Harvey, and Jarrett, Jainey, Jacen and Jenna Harvey; great-grandchildren, Bella, Bubba and Leo; sisters, Iris Scott and Emily Lacy, both of Orlando, Florida; and extended family Donna Todd of Jacksonville, Florida, and Robbie Todd of Odum.

Funeral services were held May 26 from Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. R.M. Warren and the Rev. Jimmy Lord officiating. Interment followed in Piney Grove Cemetery. Active pallbearers were family and friends.

Bret Brooker

Jesup—Bret Brooker, 48, of Jesup died May 23, 2023.

The Glynn County native had lived in Wayne County all of his life and was a member of Anderson Drive Baptist Church. He was an ASE-certified mechanic and owned BB’s Auto Repair. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, tinkering with trucks and boats, and spending time with his family and dogs.

His parents, Douglas and Sandra Brooker, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Micki Carter Brooker of Jesup; two daughters, Harley LaShae Robinson and Marissa Brooker, both of Jesup; a son, Cameron Brooker of Jesup; three grandchildren, Kayleigh, Kayden and Josie; a sister, Laurie (Hal) Roby of Keysville; a brother, Fred (Tammy) Anderson of Jesup; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life was held May 26 at Rinehart Chapel with the Rev. Fred Anderson officiating. Private interment was in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation was held one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Southern Bank, 927 S. First Street, Jesup, GA 31545, c/o Fred Anderson, for medical expenses for Bret.

Julian C. McLendon Jr.

Jesup—Julian C. McLendon Jr., 80, of Jesup died May 26, 2023.

The Chatham County native and former resident had lived in Wayne County the past 20 years and was a retired social worker with DFACS. He loved to have a pen or pencil in his hand while he transferred many pictures in his mind to his paper. Everyone around him called him “Grandad,” whether he was kin to the person or not.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth “Nana” McLendon; his son, Daniel McLendon; and two sisters, Joan and Barbara.

Survivors include a grandson, Daniel Fields of Jesup; and three great-grandchildren, Mary, John and Dawson.

Private memorial services will be held Saturday, June 3.

Josephine Herrin Tyre

Odum—Josephine Herrin Tyre, 97, of Odum died May 30, 2023.

The Wayne County native was a lifelong member of Blanton Grove Church of God. She will be remembered for her employment with Wayne Memorial Hospital, Manhattan Shirt Factory and Pascal Shirt Factory.

Her ministry was shared with her love of gardening and flowers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Franklin Tyre; her son, Ronnie Tyre; three grandchildren, Michael Moore, Jerrod Tyre and Tiffany James Daniels; and several siblings, Fleming, Vernon, Jimmy, Lamar and Etheleen.

Survivors include a daughter, Janice (Rick) James of Odum; a son, Gary (Jamey) Tyre of Jesup; a daughter-in-law, Jeanie Tyre of Jesup; sisters, Faye Griffis of Odum, Dale (Roger) Anderson of Jesup and Ernie Herrin of Brunswick; brothers, Herbert (Joyce) Herrin of Valdosta, Bobby Herrin of Jesup, Bennie (Erica) Hiwassee, Charles “Hody” (Sharon) Herrin of Odum and Ray (Sharon) Herrin of Odum; seven grandchildren, Shane, Justin, Terry, Courtney, Allison, Greg and Ray; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and cousins. 

Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. at Altamaha Baptist Church with the Rev. R.M. Warren and Pastor Bob Richardson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be her family.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.

Laura Dean Tyre

Jesup—Laura Dean Shetters Tyre, 84, died peacefully on May 26, 2023 at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah.

A resident of Wayne County for nearly 55 years and former resident of Jacksonville, Florida, she was born on Aug. 27, 1938, in Sherwood, Tennessee, to the late Richard and Judy Pack Shetters.  She was a homemaker and beautician who was fiercely supportive of her family. She had a sweet and caring nature.

She was a faithful member of Anderson Drive Baptist Church for more than 40 years and was also a longtime member and past president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Jesup Shrine Club. She remained active throughout her life, participating in BRAG and riding bicycles across the state of Georgia with her late husband. She enjoyed gardening, and she truly loved flowers. In her spare time, she enjoyed entertaining her friends and family, many times over a cup of coffee on the back porch, sometimes even making her famous biscuits for her lucky guests to enjoy. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James A. “Hoss” Tyre; a daughter, Terri Johnson; a grandson, Caleb Tyre; brothers, James, Joe, Gene and Richard Shetters; and sisters, Mary Trussell, Bibb Durden and Johnnie Jones.

Survivors include her two sons, Jim (Tammie) Tyre of Waycross and Joe (Heather) Tyre of Jesup; two sisters, Bonnie Wise and Joy ‘Tiny” Kirkus of Yulee, Florida; one brother, Everett “Hutch” (Sonja) Shetters of Waycross; a son-in-law, Gary Johnson of Waycross; grandchildren, Brandy Murray and fiancé Michael James of Waycross, Colbi (Jamey) Sellers of Waycross, Mandee Waters of Jacksonville and Kennedy and Jameson NeSmith, both of Jesup; great-grandchildren, Andrew Murray, Hagen Seitz, Arleigh Sellers and Macon Sellers; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

Funeral services were held May 29 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup with the Rev. Dustin Cribbs officiating.

Interment followed in Jesup City Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Ronnie Mullis, Donnie Mullis, Ronnie Tyre, Isaac Wise, Junior Kirkus and Doug Miller.

Glenda Lynn Davis

Jesup—Glenda Lynn Davis, 45, died May 22, 2023, at University of Florida Health Jacksonville.

A resident of Jesup and Jacksonville, Florida, for most of her life, she was born on July 26, 1977, in Jacksonville.

Her work ethic was always second to none and throughout her life, she stayed busy working hard as a painter. In her spare time, she enjoyed collecting things, working on her truck and spending time with her beloved family.

She was preceded in death by her father, Willie Sapp, and her brother, Mac McHenry.

Survivors include her two daughters, Brittany Nicole (Jesse) Garcia and Summer Marie Blocker; three sons, Anthony Eugene Blocker Jr., Tyler Scott Blocker and Dalton Rhane Blocker; her mother, Linda Orand; sisters, Wendy Fralick, Lindagail D’Ignazio, Annette Jones and Carla Morris; brothers, Willie Sapp, Billy Drury and Carl Sapp; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

Funeral services were held May 28 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup.

Interment will be private.

Donnie R. Sikes Sr.

Baxley—Donnie R. Sikes Sr., 89, of Baxley died May 23, 2023, at Memorial Health in Savannah.

He was born Dec. 29, 1933, in Baxley to Oscar and Tempie Sikes. He was a carpenter, a volunteer firefighter for more than 38 years with the Baxley Fire Department, and a member of the Holmesville Masonic Lodge No. 195.

He was a member of Baxley First Baptist Church, the Fisherman’s Sunday School Class, and the Joy Group. He was an avid supporter of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and The Shriners Children’s Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth K. Sikes, and a granddaughter, Amy Reese.

Survivors include his sons, Donnie Sikes Jr. of Baxley and David (Laury) Sikes of Lawrenceville; daughters, Cecelia (Kerry) Reese of Baxley and Tempie (Jimmy) Anderson of Jesup; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; an aunt, Helen Shumans of Bloomingdale; an uncle, Henry Smith of Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held May 26 at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Brown, the Rev. Robert Wigley and the Rev. Fred Anderson officiating. Eulogies were given by David Sikes and Donnie Sikes Jr. Interment followed in Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Dallas Sikes, Ty Anderson, James Anderson, Les Grimm, Jesse Scott, Dawysn Sikes and Carson Anderson.

Honorary pallbearers were the Fisherman’s Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church, past and present members of the Baxley Fire Department, Mike Serrano, Larry Knight, Ricky Clark, Ray Carter, Freda Gruber and Jeff Baxley.
