 Marcelle Edmondson Yeomans

Jesup—Marcelle Edmondson Yeomans, 90, of Jesup died April 28, 2023.

The Wayne County native was a 1951 graduate of Jesup High School, a member of the Spring Grove Freewill Baptist Church, a homemaker, and a 27-year employee with The Press-Sentinel.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed flower gardening.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Warner Yeomans, and a son, Charles Yeomans.

Survivors include a daughter, Veta Yeomans of Jesup; a brother, Darryl (Sarah) Edmondson of Screven; a granddaughter, Angie (Paul) McDuffie of Odum; two great-grandchildren, Rem Flournoy and Macie McDuffie; and several nieces and nephews, including Rebecca and Hugh.

Graveside funeral services will be held Sunday, May 7, at 2 p.m. at Spring Grove Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the cemetery.

Lauree Surrency Hires

Jesup—Lauree Surrency Hires, 98, a life-long native of Wayne County, died April 29, 2023, under the care of Hospice of South Georgia surrounded by her close, loving family.

She was a devout Christian, a “Godly Lady,” who enjoyed worshiping in song, witnessing about her Lord and Savior, and living by example. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

At the age of 17, she was a welder in the J.A. Jones Shipyards, building Liberty Ships during the World War II war effort, along with her two older sisters. She was a former employee of the Sea Island and Manhattan shirt factories and enjoyed a 26-year career with ITT Rayonier, retiring from the Technical Department at 76.

She was a loyal supporting member of the Blanton Grove Church of God for decades and then returned to her roots to worship faithfully in her later years at Altamaha Baptist Church, where she was the oldest member.

She was well-known for her cooking and baking skills and was always happy to share a cream cake with her family and friends, many times as “comfort food” or “just because.” She was a long-time member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, which provides medical- field scholarships given in the name of her mother to many Wayne County High School graduates—a family tradition that carries on.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Terrell and Bessie G. Surrency; her loving husband of 72 years and fishing buddy, Robie H. Hires; sisters, Carobeth Highsmith and Nanelle Bacon; brothers, Frank, Griffin and Tyler Surrency; and a grandchild, Lemar Stephens.

Survivors include five daughters, Yolonda “Tootsie” (Roger) Garner of Baxley, Alma (Pat) Wade of St. Simons Island, Robyn (J.C. ) Blanton of Baxley, Rita (Kenny) Copeland of Screven and Fain Hires of Jesup; two sons, Jerry (Jackie) Hires and Herschell (Shani) Hires of Jesup; 20 grandchildren, Jay Hires, Patrick Wade, Heather Shefka, Mike Benda, Amy (Scott) Cole, Travis Hires, Stephanie (Chad) Chadwick, Anna (Tracy) Tyre, Sarah (Jason) Drew, Dallas (Britt) Richey, Andy (Karen) Benda, Bess (Jason) Brown, Asa (Tonya) Garner, John (Kristy) Garner, Whitney Hires, Kailey (Tyler) Rogers, Cindy (Mike) Woodard, Sharon (Larry) Jacobs, Karen Paulson and Candi Strickland; 44 great-grandchildren; 30 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held May 3 at Altamaha Baptist Church with the Rev. Ed Bacon, the Rev. Will Bacon and Dink NeSmith Jr. officiating. Honorary pallbearers were Maxine Barwick, Caleb Poppell and the rest of the loving staff of Hospice of South Georgia. Private interment will be held in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances be made to the Business and Professional Women’s Club “Bessie G. Surrency Memorial Scholarship Fund” in care of Susan Sutton, P.O. Box 834, Jesup, GA 31598 or Hospice of South Georgia, 1625 Sunset Blvd, Jesup, GA 31545.

Rachelda LaDonna Crummey

Jesup—Rachelda LaDonna Crummey, 49, of Jesup died on April 30, 2023.

The Wayne County native was the office manager at Jesup Pediatrics. She loved to travel to Callaway Gardens for the peaceful scenery and also to the North Georgia mountains.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Herman Bennett; paternal grandparents, Clifford B. and Annie Ruth Crummey; and uncles, Jessee, Otis and Thad Crummey.

Survivors included a daughter, Carlin Ussery of Jesup; parents, Gloria Crummey of Jesup and LaDon (Viki) Crummey of Jesup; two brothers, Jeremy (Yvette) Crummey of Jesup and Jay “Tractor” Crummey of Jesup; a special cousin who was like a sister, Whitney Hadlock; a special aunt, Wylene (Mitch) Beverly; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A celebration-of-life service will be held Monday, May 8, at 11 a.m. at Rinehart Chapel with the Rev. Justin Ellis officiating.

The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to services at the funeral home.

Janet Mixon Savage

Jesup—Janet Mixon Savage, 81, of Jesup died April 29. 2023.

She was born in Bruns-wick and lived in Florida for many years but resided in Jesup for the past 40 years. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and a retiree from the Wayne County Tax Assessor’s Office.

She enjoyed growing flowers and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her helpful attitude, ready smile and sweet spirit will be missed by all who knew her, her family said.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Delmas E. Mixon and Hazel Collins Mixon, and three brothers, J. Rodney, Glen E. and Donald Wayne Mixon Sr.

Survivors include a son, John B. Savage of Waycross; two daughters, Ann (Paul) Goober and Susan (Gary) Crowder, all of Jesup; a sister, Sandra Mixon of Franklin, North Carolina; grandchildren, Sara Cushing, Austin Savage, Leah Hickox, Erica Goober Sutton, Josh Mullis, Sean Savage, Laura Mullis and Abigil Savage; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held May 1 from Liberty  Cemetery with the Rev. Mickey Tomberlin and the Rev. Gerald Greenlee officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to GHC Hospice, 141 S. Macon Street, Jesup, GA 31545.

Philip Lloyd Tyre

Screven—Philip Lloyd Tyre, 72, of Screven died April 27, 2023.

The Wayne County native was a self-employed electrician with Southern Electrical Company. Golfing, photography, and walking along the beach, finding seashells ,were favorite things that he enjoyed.

He was preceded in death by his son, Philip Brint Tyre; his parents, Lloyd and Louise Tyre; and two sisters, Lee Cleland and Sylvia Harvey.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Rhonda Tyre of Screven; a son, Justin Shane Tyre of Screven; a granddaughter, Zaley; a brother, Edwin Tyre of Screven; a brother-in-law, Ronald (Debbie) Burnette of Hiawassee; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held May 1 at Rinehart Chapel with David Simmons officiating. Interment followed in Screven City Cemetery. Active pallbearers were family and friends.

Julia Bargeron Waters

Warner Robins—Julia Bargeron Waters, 95, of Warner Robins died April 30, 2023.

The Wayne County native was a former member of Jesup Primitive Baptist Church. She began her career at Manhattan Shirt Factory and then worked at Hardees. Later in life, she reared her children at home and was a “nanny” for several family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Manning Everett Waters; a son, Allen Waters; and several siblings.

Survivors include three sons, Edison (Pat) Waters of Charleston, South Carolina, Marcus (Linda) Waters of Warner Robins, Dwayne (Lisa) Waters of Merritt Island, Florida; three sisters, Thelma, Norma Lou and Frances; a brother, Jobie; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. at Jesup Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Keith Tillman officiating. Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Steven, Jonathan, Joshua, Caleb, Chase, Chandler and Ty Waters.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.

Dwayne Wasdin

Patterson—Dwayne Wasdin, 76, of Patterson died April 26, 2023.

The Pierce County native attended Screven First Baptist Church and was a retired ITT Rayonier employee. Hunting and gun auction sales were favorite pastimes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Colon and Reba Wasdin; three sisters, Cynthia Thornton, Nancy Wilson and Saundra Miller; and a brother, Thomas Wasdin.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Sherry Thornton Wasdin of Patterson; two daughters, April (Ron) Regier of Escanaba, Michigan and Shay Wasdin of Patterson; a son, Jeremy (Shanda) Wasdin of Bristol; seven grandchildren, Ridge Purcell (fiancé, Mallory Duncan), Leslie Purcell, Jose and Jesse Zarraga, J.J. Wasdin, MacKenzie and Christian Regier; and an expected great-grandson, Walker Ridge Purcell.

Graveside funeral services were held April 30 in Lake Chapel Cemetery in Patterson with Elder Jason Deal and Durwood Miller officiating.

Phillip Mark Bacon Jr.

Jesup—Phillip Mark Bacon Jr., 38, affectionately known by his family and friends as “Country,” died April 23, 2023, at home.

A resident of Baxley and Jesup for most of his life, he was born on Sept. 18, 1984, in Conroe, Texas. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps as an Apache helicopter mechanic for several years before returning home, where he worked in construction and HVAC.

He was always smiling and joking around. He was softhearted and loved people. In return, they loved him back. He was strong-willed and stubborn when he wanted to be but would give anything to help a friend in need. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with the ones he loved.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ralph and Mildred Bacon, and his aunt, Debbie Deen.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Mark and Cindy Bacon of Screven; his mother, Carla Thomas and fiancé, Richard Kamppi, of Bloomingdale; siblings, Rebecca Chancey of Bloomingdale, Tyler Thomas of Baxley, Ronnie Kamppi of Bloomingdale, Tyler (Brittany) Moseley of Screven and Amy (Blake) Smith of Screven; maternal grandparents, Carl and Helen Scarborough of Odum; maternal grandparents, Pete and Lynda Lastinger of Jesup; uncles, Carl (Vicki) Scarborough of Odum, Nathan (Amy) Scarborough of Odum and David (Crystal) Lastinger of Jesup; an aunt, Marlene (David) Jelks of Riceboro; a former companion of nearly 10 years, Kendra Drury; a special friend who was like a second mother, Janice Spell; a special friend and companion, Tasha Blanton; nieces and nephews, Tessa, Dustyn and Matthew King, Fayth Thomas, Mason and Kinsey Moseley, and Poppie and Easton Smith; and a host of other extended-family members.

Funeral services were held April 28 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home with Joey Scarborough and Pastor Bob Richardson officiating. Interment followed in Piney Grove Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Dustin King, Brent Messer, Phil Kay, Matthew King, Tyler Moseley and Joey Scarborough.

Honorary pallbearers were Breagan, Jayden and Koralyn Drury, Alicia Hall, Kyle Perry, Kristy and Dave Wilson, Ken Kamppi and Jordan Haglee.

Jonathan Lee Roy Collins

Tison—Jonathan Lee Roy Collins, 59, died April 13, 2023, at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah.

He was born in Jesup on Feb. 21, 1964, and lived in Tison for 25 years. He was a talented self-employed upholsterer for 35 years. He enjoyed camping and fishing on a sandbar on the Altamaha River.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lee Roy Collins, and a sister, Donna Collins Lang.

Survivors include his mother, Faye Collins of Jesup; a brother, Nelson Collins of Jesup; children, Tina (Dusty) Blair of Juliette,  Jonathan Collins of Jesup, Matthew Collins of

Glennville and Sheila Collins of Macon; his companion of 25 years, Deborah King, and her daughter, Kelly King, both of Tison; 11 grandchildren; two nieces; and one nephew.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted.

Marjorie Faye  Spivey Mimbs

Lyons—Marjorie Faye Spivey Mimbs, 81, of Lyons died April 27, 2023, at her residence after an extended illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, the Rev. Emory Edward Mimbs; parents, Ivey Lee Spivey and Ellena Morgan Spivey; two sisters, Margaret Maye Spivey (her twin) and Mary Spivey; a grandson, Jeffery Lee Mimbs; two sisters-in-law, Jeanette Tapley and Jean Payton; and one special nephew, Danny Elliott.

Survivors include two sons, Randall Lee (Vickie) Mimbs of Lyons and Roderick Edward (Phoebe) Mimbs  of Palmdale, California; one daughter, Selena Marie (Larry) Lockley of Lyons; one sister, Marie Martin of Dublin; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The graveside funeral service was held April 30 at Carter’s Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery in Dublin with the Rev. Brian Durden officiating.
