James Coye “Jimmy” Overstreet

Jesup—James Coye “Jimmy” Overstreet of Jesup died May 20, 2023, under the care of Hospice Savannah Inc. with Parkinson’s disease.

He was born Jan. 18, 1945. A 1963 graduate of Waycross High School, he played varsity basketball and baseball. He attended Massey Business College in Jacksonville, Florida, receiving an associate’s degree in accounting. He served his country in the U.S. Army with service in Fort Benning, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Germany and Holland.

He had a strong work ethic even as a young boy in Waycross. He was the scoreboard keeper for the Milwaukee Braves Farm Team and a lifeguard at the Waycross Recreation Department and had a bicycle route delivering the Grit newspaper.

He retired from Rayonier after 40 years of service. He also officiated basketball and baseball for the Georgia and Wayne County officials association and for the Wayne County Recreation Department for more than 31 years, along with the late Jimmy Peek and the late Jimmy Martin. This trio of officials were in demand at tournaments owing to their experience and accuracy at making calls. They were mentored by the late Johnny Tyre, Jimmy’s uncle.

He and his son, Jamie, also operated Overstreet Lawn Service for 15 years in Jesup. The two were devoted fans of the Wayne County Yellow Jackets and rarely missed a game or sports event. He loved athletics and was very knowledgeable about statistics in all major league and college sports. He was an avid Atlanta Braves and University of Georgia Bulldogs fan and was a longtime member of the Unity Church of God.

Survivors include his son, James “Jamie” Coye Overstreet Jr. of Jesup; two sisters, Jean O. Dougherty of Fernandina Beach, Florida, and Mary O. (Ron) Burroughs of Savannah; a sister-in-law, Darlene H. (Bill) Antley of Port St. Joe, Florida; a brother-in-law, Ricky Hammond of Jesup; eight nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins and other extended-family members.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 27, at 2 p.m. at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup with the Rev. Calvin Anderson officiating.

Private interment will be held at the Georgia Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Jimmy Overstreet Fund at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in care of Jeff Chandler to assist in medical and funeral expenses.

Rebecca H. Collins

Jesup—Rebecca H. Collins, 64, died May 19, 2023, at Jesup Health and Rehabilitation under the care of GHC Hospice.

A resident of Screven for the past five years, living with her aunt Hazel Bullock, she was born on June 2, 1958, in Jesup. She spent her early years in Glennville where she was raised by her late grandmother, Rebecca Murphy.

She was a graduate of Glennville High School in the Class of 1977. She never had children of her own, but she lovingly helped raise her step-grandchildren and was respectfully called “Nanny.”

In her spare time, she enjoyed fishing, vegetable gardening and watching her favorite soap operas on television.

In addition to her grandmother, she was preceded in death by her husband of 20 years, J.T. Collins, and her parents, Devon Herrington and Doris Nichols.

Survivors include two brothers, Robert and Len Herrington; two sisters, Susan Bunch and Vicki Vogelsang; an aunt and caregiver, Hazel Bullock; a friend of more than 30 years who was like a sister, Vickie Sue (James) McGlashan; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

Funeral services were held May 21 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup with the Rev. Randy Pruitt officiating.

Private interment services were held at Jesup City Cemetery.

The family would like to extend its deepest gratitude to the staff of GHC Hospice for the “wonderful” care given to her over the past few years.

Tommie Driggers Beasley

Jesup—Tommie Driggers Beasley, 72, of Jesup died May 23, 2023.

The Wayne County native attended Unity Church of God and was retired as manager of Wildridge Apartment Community. She enjoyed her fellowship with family and friends, working with Wayne County Productions, but especially being “MeMe” to her loving grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her father, Kenny Driggers, and loving dad, Cecil Griffis.

Survivors include a daughter, Tina Beasley of Watkinsville; two sons, Robert (Colleen) Beasley of Bishop and Patrick (Rachel) Beasley of Knoxville, Tennessee; her mother, Mary Alice Madray Griffis of Jesup; eight grandchildren, Anabel, Dallas, Presley, Cecilia, Tannin, Robert William, Lawson and Thomas; a sister, Sherry (Neal) Brannen of Dalton; two brothers, Valdine (Becky) Griffis and Kelvin (Zelda) Griffis, all of Jesup; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Celebration-of-life services will be held Sunday, May 28, at 2 p.m. from Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Calvin Anderson officiating. Interment will be in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be family and friends.

Family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home.

Wanda Faye Osborne

Jesup—Wanda Faye Osborne, 75, of Jesup died May 16, 2023.

The Wayne County native was a member of O’Quinn Baptist Church and a retired employee with Altamaha Technical College. She enjoyed gardening, puzzles, and listening to her music.

She was predeceased by her parents, Herman and Ida Sheffield Osborne, and her sister, Gwen Sessler.

Survivors include her sister, Glenda Osborne and a brother, Elder Jim (Vicky) Osborne, both of Jesup, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held May 19 from Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Gerald Greenlee officiating. Interment followed in Ritch Cemetery. Active pallbearers were family and friends.

Dwayne Michael Strickland

Plaquemine, Louisiana—Dwayne Michael Strickland, 46, of Plaquemine, Louisiana, died May 14, 2023.

He was a native of Jesup and graduated from Georgia Tech in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree of civil engineering. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was an outdoors enthusiast who took every opportunity to be outside in the sun or on the water. He made lifetime friends with everyone.

He was a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend who will be missed dearly, his family said.

He was preceded in death by his father, Daniel Strickland; paternal grandparents, J.W. Strickland and Opal Fetner; uncles, David and Dwain Strickland; and maternal grandparents, Ingeborg “Omi” Gertrude Ida Tagge Delk and James Gilbert Delk.

Survivors include his wife, Robin and their children, Camilla and Marshall. Their loving relationship spanned more than 15 years. They were married for seven. In addition, he is survived by his mother, Christine Boyd; his brothers, Eric Strickland and Justin Boyd; niece and nephew, Tylar and Jackson; his uncle, Hart Boyd, and his family; sisters-in-law, Amanda Strickland and Loree Marshall; and numerous cousins.

There will be two life celebrations scheduled for family and friends. One will be held in Plaquemine, and the second will be held on the Georgia coast.

Should family and friends desire, contributions may be sent to Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) of Louisiana, in memory of Dwayne Strickland. Contributions help conserve, promote and enhance the present and future availability of coastal resources for the benefit and enjoyment of all.
