Joseph Cleveland  Arnett III

Kingsland—Joseph Cleveland Arnett III, 69, lovingly known as JC, died on Aug. 14, 2021.

He was born in Jesup but has been a resident of Kingsland for the past 43 years. He was born on Jan. 17, 1952, to Joseph and Nellie Arnett.

He was married to Deborah Scarborough Arnett for 48 years. He was a devoted father and grandfather who had two daughters, April (Tim) Hughes and Amy (Ronnie) Blount. He had seven grandchildren, Micah Hughes, Cooper Blount, Jonah Hughes, Isaac Blount, Elliott Rose Blount, Mason Hughes and Gracie Hughes. He had one brother, Clifford Arnett (deceased), and two sisters, Nancy (Mike) Copeland and Sue Arnett, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He graduated from Wayne County High School. He was most proud of being a part of the 1967 Georgia AA State Title baseball championship, where no Wayne County team before or since has won this title. He joined the Army National Guard as a young man, where he proudly served his country for six years. He received a degree in engineering and began his career as a mechanical engineer at Georgia Power Company until he retired after 32 years.

He enjoyed being near water, listening to music and fishing, but the thing he enjoyed most in this world were his grandchildren—all seven of them. He made a point to spend as much time with each of his grandchildren as he could. They hold fond memories of their time with their Papa. Among the many memories are the Thursday dates that he had individually with his grand-babies. He never missed an event involving his grandchildren. He loved telling stories to his grandchildren. That was one of the things they looked forward to during their time with Papa. He also loved taking them for rides in his green truck. And when the kids saw him coming, you could hear a resounding “PAPA!!” coming from their joyful voices.

He attended and served as a deacon at First Baptist Church of Kingsland. He had a heart for helping others, and one of his proudest accomplishments was helping in the development of the Miracle League of Camden County. He served as a chaplain in the Truck Stop Ministry of Camden County. Each year he would also be sure to donate school supplies to David L. Rainer Elementary School. He also served in the Kiwanis Club for many years. He was willing to help anyone and everyone he could, at a moment’s notice, his family said.

Service information will follow in the coming weeks.

Byron Johnson Scott Jr.

Surrency—The Rev. Byron Johnson Scott Jr., 76, of Surrency entered his heavenly home on Aug. 14, 2021, after a short but difficult battle with cancer.

He was born in Atlanta on Aug. 9, 1945. He graduated from Southwest DeKalb High School in 1964 and continued on to receive a psychology degree from Asbury College in 1967 and a master’s degree of divinity from Emory University in 1970.

He was married to Patricia (Tricia) Midget on June 12, 1965. Their marriage of 56 years was a godly example to all who knew them. He devoted 60 years of his life to pastoral ministry, delivering his first sermon at the age of 16 and his last one only three weeks before his home going at the age of 76.

In addition to loving others well, he enjoyed reading the Bible, studying theology and writing books. He was actively involved in praying for his loved ones. He was an encourager, prayer warrior, and loving man of God. He authored three books: The Mystery of God’s Will (a study of Ephesians), Called to Witness (how to evangelize), and Living with a New Heart (his testimony of God’s faithfulness through his heart transplant in 2010.)

He lived with a weakened heart from rheumatic fever he had as a child. He survived congestive heart failure, a stroke, skin cancer, and two automobile accidents, yet he faced each of these battles keenly aware of God’s grace, ability to heal, and presence. Through every trial, Byron gave glory to God and found ways to laugh. His sense of humor will never be forgotten.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ora Montine Scott and his father, Byron Johnson Scott Sr.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Scott; their children, Ken (Tammy) Scott, Tina (Daniel) Jobe and Amy (Ken) Morgan; 11 grandchildren, Lexie, Blake, Anna (Caleb), Christina (CJ), Bethany, Nathan, Sarah, Esther, Christopher, Jeremy and Abby; a sister, Janice Sanders; and his sister-in-law, Martha (Albert) Jones.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Bethel United Methodist Church, 740 Bethel Rd, Surrency, GA, 31563. This beloved church was the last appointment of his pastorate.
