Ingeborg Gertrude Tagge Delk

Jesup—Ingeborg Gertrude Tagge Delk, 82, died April 21, 2021, at home.

A resident of Jesup for nearly 50 years, she was born on Sept. 28, 1938, in Friedland, East Germany, to the late, Gustav Adolf and Ida Rexin Tagge. She was a longtime employee of Kmart in Jesup, where she was the 23rd person hired. She eventually became a department manager before her retirement in 1998.

She enjoyed cooking, baking beautiful cakes and shopping, especially on QVC, in her spare time. More than anything she enjoyed spending time with the ones she loved the most, her beloved family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Gilbert Delk, and two brothers, Wolfgang and Horst Tagge.

Survivors include her daughter, Christine Boyd of Jesup; a son, Hart (Terri) Boyd of Dallas; a sister, Hannelore Thomas of Newbern, North Carolina; grandchildren, Dwayne (Robin) Strickland of Plaquemine, Louisiana, Eric Strickland of Jesup, Justin Boyd of Jesup and Nathan and Natalie Boyd of Dallas; great-grandchildren, Tylar and Jackson Strickland of Barhamsville, Virginia and Camilla and Marshall Strickland of Plaquemine; her goddaughter, Marion Dalrymple; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended-family members.

Private graveside services were held in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Stanley Todd officiating.

Remembrances may be made to Hospice of South Georgia, 1625 Sunset Blvd., Jesup, GA 31545.

Joyce Perkins Quick

Odum—Joyce Perkins Quick, 82, died peacefully on April 25, 2021, at home under the care of Hospice of South Georgia and surrounded by her loving family.

A native and lifelong resident of Wayne County, she was born on May 5, 1938, to the late Leonard and Quinelle Trull Perkins. She was an English teacher in the Wayne County school system for more than 28 years, having taught at Wayne County Junior High and Wayne County High School.

She was a member of the Wayne County Retired Educators and was a longtime active member of the Odum Baptist Church, where she served in many different capacities over the years, including Sunday school teacher, treasurer and children’s church director.

In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, reading and traveling. She was blessed with a servant’s heart and had the sweetest spirit, making her an extraordinary wife, mother and grandmother, her family said. She devoted herself to her family with unconditional love and treasured the time they spent together, according to her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Wheeler Quick; her son, Alan Quick; and her sister, Dorothy Mallard.

Survivors include her daughters, Kimberly Quick Browning, Latrisa Quick (Mitchell) Brewer and Bonnie Quick (Mike) Gordon, all of Odum; a stepdaughter, Angie McElman of Jonesboro; sisters, Greta Vinson of Macon and Melba (Donald) Stephens of Odum; a brother, Eddie (Susie) Perkins of Jesup; grandchildren, Adrienne Browning of Brunswick, Rachael (James) Ludwig of Hahira, Andrea Browning of Brunswick, Liana (Keith) Jackson of St. Cloud, Florida, Garrett Brewer of Statesboro, Tommy Davis of Jonesboro and Chris (Amy) Gordon of Jesup; great-grandchildren, Peyton and Max Ludwig and Haze and Renz Gordon; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended-family members.

Funeral services were held April 27 at Odum Baptist Church with the Rev. Vann Dempsey officiating.

Interment was in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Josh Fenn, Chamois Campbell, Gordy Campbell, Brooks Mallard, James Perkins, Dell Stephens and Dwaine Mallard.

Over the last five years, Mrs. Quick’s caregivers have been extraordinary: They have been fiercely loyal, dependable and have sacrificed much to spend long hours meeting every need, the family said. Also, a special thanks goes out to Hospice of Southeast Georgia and Dr. Hendrix and his staff.

Ralph Valentine Dill Jr.

Jesup—Ralph Valentine Dill Jr., 86, died April 23, 2021, at Memorial Hospital in  Jacksonville.

A resident of Jesup for the past 26 years, he was born on May 18, 1934, in Maine. He was an accomplished musician who could play almost any stringed instrument, but his specialty was steel guitar. He played for many years on the Grand Ole Opry and had toured with numerous big time country performers, including Charley Pride, Conway Twitty and Tanya Tucker, along with many others.

Although he loved music, the love of his life was his wife, Jeanette Dill, who he stated “rocked his world” the day he met her. He was a hard worker and took other jobs to make ends meet when necessary,  painting houses or doing construction. He also painted murals and pictures in his spare time, and he truly loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

His parents, Dorothy and Ralph Valentine Dill Sr., and several of his brothers and sisters preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife and soulmate for the past 35 years, Jeanette Dill of Jesup; daughters, Debra (Chris) Dixon of Jesup, Abby Hinton of Jesup, Margie Williamson of Jesup, Jeanine (Chris) Brabham of Ellalbell and Penny (James) Burrage of Jesup; a son, Noah Hinton of Jeusp; siblings, Lenwood, Jimmy, Sylvia and Ruthie; 12 grandchildren; multiple great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended-family members.

Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in with his longtime friend the Rev. Mark Downs officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Interment will follow in Sunset Oaks. Memorial Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be family members, Chris, Noah, Bryce, Gage, Lance and C.J.

Joyce Willene Oakes

Oakland, California—Joyce Willene Oakes, 81, died at her home in Oakland, California, on April 17, 2021.

She was born on Jan. 20, 1940, in Wayne County to the late Solomon and Asilee Jarriel Mallard. She spent her early years in Odum, where she was educated in the Wayne County school system and graduated high school as salutatorian. After meeting and marrying her husband, who was serving in the United States Army, the two were stationed in Germany before returning to the United States, where they lived in Tennessee, Ohio, Florida and Georgia.

Later in life, she attained her nursing degree from South Georgia College in 1980, graduating at the top of her class. She then began a rewarding career working as a registered nurse at several different hospitals, including Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas; Cape Canaveral Hospital in Cape Canaveral, Florida; and Wayne Memorial Hospital in Jesup. She even worked as a visiting nurse for many years, making house calls for people who were “shut in” and ensuring that their health needs were met.

Her strong desire to serve and help others made her a natural at her career, and she excelled. She constantly looked after the needs of others and was always willing to lend a helping hand, her family said.

She was an active member of New Hope Free Will Baptist Church, where she served as the church secretary for many years. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening and traveling, but her heart was always happiest when she was with her beloved family and close friends, her family said.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobbie Hugh Oakes; her brothers, Thomas and Raymond Mallard; and her daughter, Michelle Oakes.

Survivors include her daughter, Grace Oakes and her fiancé, Blaze Kenyon of Oakland; a son-in-law, Russell Kiel of Oakland; three special sisters-in-law, Linda Mallard of Brunswick, Billie Ruth McMillan of Sylvania, and Jane (Pete) Hutchinson of Ellabell; a longtime friend who was like a son, Adam Cornelius of San Francisco, California; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.

Memorial services will be held May 6 at 11 a.m. at New Hope Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Horne officiating. 

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Dr. Melvin F.

“Mel” Wilson

Jesup—Dr. Melvin F. “Mel” Wilson, 97, of Jesup died April 21, 2021.

The Kansas native had lived in Wayne County most of his adult life and was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was an involved businessman and longtime optometrist. He was a former Kiwanis Club member as well as active in other community organizations. He was a World War II veteran, landing on Omaha Beach.

He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia “Patty” Wald Wilson.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Marsha (Jim) Risi of St. Simons Island; two sons, Mike Wilson of Albany and Bobby Wilson of Savannah; two grandchildren, Eric and Scott Risi; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Rebecca Duke-Barton officiating. Interment was in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery.

Madison “Madi”

Holland

Jesup—Madison “Madi” Holland, 20, of Jesup went running into Jesus’ and her twin sister Jade’s arms on April 22, 2021.

She was a member of Fort Caroline Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida, where she was the greeter who would welcome people into worship.

Her love of music, especially the song,“Wheels on the Bus” by Cedarmont Kids, put a smile on her face every time she heard it.  Her family would read and sing to her, swing her on the porch, and take her on some off-road rides in her wheelchair. Some other pleasures in life were having her hair blown dry, bouncing on her daddy’s lap, hearing children laugh and even listening for a baby’s cry.

Survivors include her parents, Kevin and Lisa Holland of Jesup; two brothers, Lance (Kara Theus) Holland and Tyler (Kurstin Williams) Holland, both of Jesup; maternal grandparents, Eddie (Brenda) Pye of Odum; paternal grandparents, George (Nancy) Holland of Jesup; two aunts, Kim Holland and Kayla (Justin) Owens; and several cousins, including Gage (Lily) Holland, Taylor, Jensley and Brylee Owens.

Memorial services were held April 26 at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with Pastor Ricky Powell officiating.

Judy Viola

Ammons Mendez

Screven—Judy Viola Ammons Mendez, 66, died April 21, 2021, at home.

A resident of Screven for more than 30 years, she was born on Dec. 10, 1954, in West Palm Beach, Florida, to the late John and Esther Buffer Ammons.

She was a loving wife and mother who devoted herself to her family and worked tirelessly to make their house a home. She loved shopping, especially from home, and socializing with her friends and family. She was known to talk on the phone for hours sometimes and may have been responsible for talking a few “ears off.” Her caring spirit didn’t stop with her family; she was a longtime member of the Screven Church of God, and she loved animals of all kinds, especially her canine companions.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,  Geraldo Lobo Mendez; and her siblings, Florene Anderson, Betty Jean Trogdon, Henry Ammons, Tina Luke and Darlene Hulett.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Jolene and Michael Bennett of Jesup; siblings, Julius “Doodle” Ammons of Clarksville, Tennessee, Vernon Ammons of Lakeland, Florida, and Linda Andrews of Cleveland, Tennessee; grandchildren, April Sweat, Michael Sweat, Kayden Bennett and Bentley Bennett, all of Jesup; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended-family members.

Visitation will be from held Thursday, April 29, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. with funeral services beginning at 7 p.m. at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup. The Rev. Dennis Johnson will officiate.

Private interment will be in Screven City Cemetery.

Myrtle Beverly Yarbrough

Odum—Myrtle Beverly Yar-brough, known by most as “Gran-ny,” 89, of Odum died April 22, 2021.

She was a native of Wayne County and a member of the Old Bethel Baptist Church. She was a former employee of Altamaha Nursing Home.

On Aug. 7, 1947, she married the love of her life, Bertie Yarbrough. They shared 43 years together before he moved to his heavenly home.

Granny was known for her sassy personality and her cooking skills. She enjoyed spending time with her family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in her heart.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James “Bertie” Yarbrough; her parents, Jake and Alberta Beverly; one son, Jimmy Yarbrough; stepdaughters, Ruby Y. Beverly and Willa Mae Anderson; a great-granddaughter, Courtney Danielle Wells; and brothers, Jack Beverly, Emmett Beverly, A.W. Beverly and Jake Franklin Beverly.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Nell Yarbrough; a granddaughter, Mechelle (Kevin) Sikes of Cobbtown; a grandson, Jimbo Yarbrough, and fiancé Melissa Wood, of Shelburne Ontario, Canada; great-grandsons, Allen Harper, Ricky (Nina) Harper, Levi Harper of Guyton and J.T. Yarbrough of Canada; one great-granddaughter, Jordan Yarbrough of Shelburne,  Canada; great-great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Boys, Cassidy Lawson, Dani Bailey, Nikolai and Eli Pontikakis and Chase Harper of Guyton, Daylyn and Calyann Reuther of Columbus, Ohio; special family Mitch and Wylene Beverly and Tony and Betty Davis; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be planned by the grandchildren at a later date.

Larry Dewayne Spell

Larry Dewayne Spell, 59, of Wayne County died April 24, 2021, at his home surrounded by his family, under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

The Appling County native had lived most of his life in Wayne County. He worked at Georgia State Prison in Reidsville before transferring to the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Jesup, from which he retired.

He served in the U.S. Army, which included a tour in Germany. He was well-liked by his co-workers, as well as by anyone he had the opportunity to meet, his family said.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Doris Edward Spell Sr. and Myrtle Lee (Spaulding) Spell, and nephews, Davey Spell and Richard Spell.

Survivors include his wife, Janice M. Spell, of Screven; daughters, Dr. Larissa (Josh) Fenn of Odum and Brandy Spell (Calvin Strickland) of Screven; grandchildren, Autumn and Christopher Geiger and Morgana and Holden Fenn; and brothers and sisters, Edward (Bonnie) Spell, Richard Spell, Greg Spell, Leonard Spell, Diane Spell of Baxley, David (Kim) Spell of Rayland, Ohio and Terrie (Robert) Schirg of Crestview, Florida.

Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Rev. Bud Womack officiating. A eulogy will be given by Larissa Fenn.

Interment will follow in Zoar Cemetery with Military Honors.

Active pallbearers will be Edward Spell, David Spell, Greg Spell, Leonard Spell, Daniel Davenport, Josh Fenn, Calvin Strickland and Jacob Spell.

Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Spell, Chuck Moseley, Guylee Washington, Tom Woods, Brenda Hearn, Ricky Sheffield, John Yawn, Tim Estep, Tony Shuman, Joel Johnson, Jim Echols, Georgia Clark, Dennis Wilkins, Joe Moseley, Walter Spence, Eric Mallard, Yancie Wright, Jackie Wright, Barbara Benge, employees of FCI- Jesup and Georgia State Prison.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
