Glen Carrol Scott

Jesup—Glen Carrol Scott, 70, died peacefully at home on March 22, 2024, under the care of Hospice of South Georgia and surrounded by his family.

A resident of Wayne County for most of his life, he was born on July 27, 1953, in Jesup.  He graduated from Wayne County High School in the Class of 1971, and he worked as a farmer for most of his life. When he wasn’t working, he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed trips to the rodeo, hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jinks Henry Scott, and his grandson, Samuel “Dylan” Hargrove.

Survivors include his daughter, Michelle (Mike) Hargrove of Jesup; two sons, Ethan (Eryn) Wagnon of Alexandria, Virginia, and Garrett Wagnon of Jesup; his mother, Fay Scott of Jesup; a grandson, Morgan Wagnon; and a host of extended- family members.

A graveside funeral service was held March 24 at Old Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Parnell Aldridge officiating.

Howard & Jones Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. 

 

James Mikell Scott

Jesup—James Mikell Scott, 56, died suddenly on March 22, 2024, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

A native and lifelong resident of Wayne County, he was born on Aug. 15, 1967. He worked as a heavy-equipment operator for the city of Jesup for 25 years before health forced his retirement.

He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting, although he never seemed to kill anything when he went hunting.

He was a longtime member of Memorial Baptist Church and was the most big-hearted and fun-loving guy that ever lived, his familly said. He was always ready to help anyone in need any time. He loved the Lord and enjoyed sharing his faith with others.

His father, Henry Scott, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Rozanne Scott of Jesup; mother, Lounell  Scott of Jesup; three children, Jonathon (Jennifer) Scott, Amber Highsmith and Lynle (Ryan) Hopkins, all of Jesup; three brothers, John Scott of Worthington, Minnesota, Jerry (Georgianna) Scott of Hortense and Jason (Amber) Scott of Jesup; grandchildren, Peyton and Kadence Highsmith, Addison Scott, Nicholas, Seana and Brendon Hopkins and Noah-Jane Parker; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

Funeral services were held March 26 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup with the Rev. Tommy Gill officiating. Interment followed in Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Jason Scott, Nicholas Hopkins, Ryan Hopkins and Ricky, Robert and Jamie Greene.

Howard-Jones Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

 

Jerry Lavaughn Smitherman

Jesup—Jerry Lavaughn Smitherman, 81, died peacefully on March 22, 2024, at home in Jesup under the care of Hospice of South Georgia and his loving family.

A resident of Jesup for the past 14 years and former resident of Elmore, Alabama, he was born on March 15, 1943, in Clanton, Alabama, to the late Curtis and Alzie Bice Smitherman.

He was always a hard worker, doing steel work in his younger years before taking a job with Autauga Farming Company, where he worked in the maintenance department. Later, he continued his work in maintenance, working with the city of Millbrook, Alabama, from which he retired in 2009.  When he wasn’t working, he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and bass fishing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three brothers, Donald, Larry and Lyndon Smitherman, and his sister, Shirley Owens.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 62 years, Annette Smitherman of Jesup; two children, Jerome Smitherman and Susan (John) Albert, all of Jesup; two sisters, Patricia Clecker of Clanton, Alabama, and Linda (Pete) Warr of Verbena, Alabama; grandchildren, Jerry (Amy) Smitherman of Tuscumbia, Alabama, Andrew McGraw of Atlanta, Patricia (Jake) Wiest of Alaska and Wyatt Albert of Jesup; great-grandchildren, Madison Smitherman of Graham, Washington, Danika Smitherman of Tuscumbia, Alabama, and Kristian Whitehurst and Logan Currington, both of Montgomery, Alabama; special friends, Liz Wright, Jerry Garner, Ramona Martin, Ethan Garner and Ed Knoll; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

Funeral services were held March 26 at Prattville Memorial Chapel and Memory Gardens in Prattville, Alabama, with the Rev. Walter Batiski officiating.

Interment followed in Prattville Memory Gardens.

Active pallbearers were John Albert, Andrew McGraw, Leslie Boozer, Richard Robinson, Jerry T. Smitherman and Ed Knoll.

Carroll “Ronnell” Roberson

Jesup—Carroll “Ronnell” Roberson, 88, of Jesup died March 13, 2024.

The Wayne County native was a 1953 graduate of Jesup High School and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a retired machinist foreman with Georgia Pacific. In his retirement life, he enjoyed working with heating and air conditioning.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Willene Ray and Arlene Poppell.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Nell Yeomans Roberson of Jesup; a daughter, Rhonda Roberson of Jesup; a son, Michael (Kathy) Roberson of Bainbridge; sisters, Peggy Nichols of Atlanta, Oleita (Richard) Crews of Glen St. Mary, Florida; a brother, Remer (Marie) Roberson of Jacksonville, Florida; grandchildren, Ben, Daniel, Chris, Kellee and Robert; great-grandchildren, Fynn, Ava, Lillianna, Ellie and Lilah Rose; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and special friends, Ricky Palmer and Hugo Leggett.

Graveside funeral services were held March 15 the Old Bethel Cemetery with the Rev. Dennie Waters officiating.

John Larry Rowell

Jesup—John Larry Rowell, 78, of Jesup died March 19, 2024.

The Bacon County native and former resident of Ware County had lived in Wayne County for the past 40 years. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church and a retired civil service employee.

The U.S. Army veteran was an avid farmer and loved peddling his produce. He enjoyed spending time with his family and pets.

His stepson, Jimmy Cobb, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Glenda Wells Rowell of Jesup; a son, Jay (Marisol) Rowell of Lawrenceville; several step-grandchildren; and several extended family members, including Ray and Kay Wells and Harold and Bridgett Rowell.

Graveside funeral services were held March 21 in Old Bethel Cemetery with the Rev. Dennie Waters officiating. The American flag presentation was presented by the American Legion Post No. 311.

In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to Hospice of South Georgia, 1625 Sunset Blvd., Jesup, GA 31545.
