Splost passes; Boyettes defeated
Election Day Tuesday was a good day for SPLOST supporters in Wayne County and a bad day for candidates named Boyette in Screven.
The SPLOST (special purpose local option sales tax) was renewed for six more years by a 4-1 margin (1,613-344, or 82.4 percent to 17.6 percent).
The 1 percent tax for special county and city projects passed in every precinct--with margins from 3-1 (250-78) in Screven to 9-1 (36-3) in Ritch.
Voter turnout was 13.8 percent (1,969 votes out of 14,213 registered voters).
In the Screven city election, political newcomer Jason Weaver defeated former mayor Donald Boyette 134-76 in the race for mayor, and incumbent Post 2 Councilman Lee Stevenson defeated incumbent mayor Melvin Boyette (Donald Boyette's son) 151-58 for the Post 2 seat.
Winning without opposition were Jody Mingledorff (153 votes) for Post 1, incumbent Raquel Wright (133 votes) for Post 3, Bobby Gray (169 votes) for Post 4 and Lonnie Murphy (147 votes) for Post 5.
Voter turnout in the city election was 53.7 percent (212 out of 395 votes).
