Clifton “Cliff” James Brewer

Jesup--Clifton “Cliff” James Brewer, 31, of Jesup died Sept.11, 2019.

The Wayne County native was a former heavy-weather coxswain with the U.S. Coast Guard for eight years.

He was predeceased by his grandparents, James Olan “Geef” and Christine Kirkland Brewer and stepfather, Randy Hand.

Survivors include his son, Cason Rhett Brewer of Jesup; mother, Jamie Brewer Hand of Jesup; father, Walter Moring of Jesup; two sisters, Daisy Simmons and Myranda Hand, both of Jesup; brother, Chris (Elizabeth) Hand of Independence, Louisiana; and paternal grandmother, Willie Mae Westberry of Jesup.

Funeral services will be held today (Saturday) at 2 p.m. at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with the Rev. Tim Brantley officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Grove Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be his cousins.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Lora Allen Evors

Jesup--Lora Allen Evors, 82, of Jesup died Sept. 11, 2019, at her residence under the care of Heartland Hospice after an extended illness.

She had lived in Wayne County most of her adult life and was a homemaker and a member of Crossroads Church of God. She was a helpmate for her husband in his ministry and taught Sunday school in her earlier years. Gardening was a favorite pastime, but she especially enjoyed spending time with her dog, Lucky.

Her husband of 61 years, pastor Claude E. Evors preceded her in death, as did her three brothers, Nevil, Pete and Tommy “Mann” Allen.

Survivors are her daughter, Debra (Terry) Kidd of Jesup;  three sons,  David (Joanne) Evors and Claude (Deborah) Evors, all of Jesup,  and pastor Dwayne (Deanne) Evors of Warner Robins; 16 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Johnson of Ludowici.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at Crossroads Church of God with pastor Hulet Smith and State Overseer Gary Lewis officiating. Private entombment will follow in the Screven City Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crossroads Church of God, 2949 Lanes Bridge Road, Jesup, GA 31545.

Deacon Allen Johnson

Savannah--Deacon Allen Johnson, 72, of Savannah died on Sept. 3, 2019.

He was born Dec. 3, 1946, to the late Willie Johnson and Dorothy Owens-Johnson in Estill, South Carolina.

He was educated in the Wayne County Training School, where he played football and graduated in the Class of 1967. He was a loyal and dutiful member and deacon of Bennett Union Missionary Baptist Church, where he also served as a member of the Male Chorus and the Usher Board.

He was a retired master sergeant of the U.S. Army, where he served for 23 years. He also worked for the U.S. Postal Service, was a prison guard at Coastal State Prison and a security guard at the bus station in Savannah, and worked at several  other side jobs.

He was a Honorary Past Potentate of Omar Temple No. 21 Shriners, a 33-degree member of Ezra Consistory No. 27 Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Masons, and a Past Master of Hourglass Lodge No. 113 of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Georgia.

He was united in holy matrimony to Dorothy Horton on June 9, 1970, and to this union two children were born, Sonya and Maurice Johnson.

He was preceded in death by both parents, Willie Johnson and Dorothy Owens-Johnson; two sons, Maurice Johnson and Kenneth Smith; two brothers, Jack Johnson and James Owens Jr.; and one sister, Rosa Lee Young.

Survivors include his devoted and loving wife of 49 years, Dorothy Horton-Johnson of Savannah; one daughter, Sonya McLeod of Savannah; a niece that was like a daughter, Alicia Bird of Atlanta; one son, Charles (Vanessia) Wallace of Jesup; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leola Little of Savannah, Dorothy Weatherspoon of Jesup; three brothers, Willie Johnson Jr. of Kissimmee, Florida, Frank Johnson of Savannah and Booker (Martha) T. Owens of Jesup; one aunt, Lucretia Shields of Jesup; sisters-in-law, Vernell Chestnut of Lawton, Oklahoma, Cora Bernard of Miami, Florida, Christian Price and Rosaline (James) Morrison, both of Rochester, New York, Shirley Purdy, Gail Foster, Yurika Foster, Gloria January and Faye (Demetrius) Paschal, all of Jesup, and Laura Elliott of Jacksonville, Florida; two brothers-in-law, John Horton of Rochester and Edward Horton of Brunswick; his godchildren, Chelsea Lopez of Jesup, Chasity Rivera, Angela Darden-Rivers (Joe) of Hinesville, and Greg (Denise) Scott of Brunswick; a special cousin, Laura Wilson of Savannah; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held today (Saturday) at 11 a.m. at Bennett Union Missionary Baptist Church. Interment is in Sunset Oaks Gardens with military rites.
