Julie Ann Batten
Odum—Julie Ann Batten, 60, of Odum died Aug. 24, 2017, after an extended illness.
The Piece County native had lived in Wayne County most of her life and was a homemaker. She enjoyed spending time with family.
She was predeceased by her parents, J.P. and Allie Mae Jordan; two sisters, Wylene Miller and Joyce Simmons; and two brothers, Cartheal and Kenneth Jordan.
Survivors include her husband, Gene Batten of Odum; a daughter, Dedria Westberry of Jesup; three sons, Matthew, Carlton and Jordan Batten, all of Odum; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lois James of Odum, Vivian Waters of Waycross and Sue Smith of Odum; two brothers, J.P. Jordan Jr. of Macon, and Carl Jordan of Piedmont, South Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.
Private memorial services will be held by the family.

Screven—Donald Ray Whitman, 70, of Screven died Aug. 24, 2017.

Mamie Jackson Edwards
Jesup—Mamie Jackson Edwards, 77, of Jesup died Aug. 27, 2017, in Jesup Health and Rehabilitation Center.
The St. Paul’s, North Carolina, native had lived in Jesup the past 12 years and was a member of Faith Chapel.
She was a homemaker and, according to her family, “a woman of God.”
She was predeceased by her parents, Neil and Blanche Jackson.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Stephen Willis Edwards of Jesup; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Stephen Nelson and Leslie Edwards of Jesup and Victor Edwards of Jesup; two grandchildren, Christy and Marcus Edwards, both of Jesup; one great-grandchild, Dante Muller; three sisters, Bessie, Teresa and Doris; two brothers, Lee and Charles; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Great Marsh Baptist Church Cemetery, 270 E. Great Marsh Church Road, St. Pauls with Rickey Taylor officiating.
The family will receive friends at the cemetery.

Jerry W. Groover
Jesup—Jerry W. Groover, 74, finished his battle with Lewy Bodies Dementia Aug. 29, 2017. He died peacefully surrounded by his family.
The Wayne County native and life-time resident was a member of Blanton Grove Church of God. He was a millwright at Rayonier and a business owner who loved farming and his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Eudell Groover, and siblings, Patsy Ray, Harry Groover and Terry Groover.
He is survived by his greatest loves in his life, his daughters and a son-in-law, Monique Cothern of St. Simons Island, Michelle Braswell of Jesup and Monica and Roy Hewitt of San Antonio, Texas; seven grandchildren, Noah Cothern, Shelby Braswell, Sydney Braswell, Sophie Braswell, Hannah Hewitt, Mallory Cline and Zoe Hewitt; five great-grandchildren; siblings and their spouses, Billie Ilee and Carroll Floyd, Jack and Emily Groover, Tom and Opal Groover, and Deeann and Steve Pierce; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Blanton Grove Church of God with the Rev. Calvin Anderson officiating. Interment services will be in the Pinecrest Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Jody Groover, Jason Floyd, David Floyd, Ashley Ray, Josh Ray and Matt Groover.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Willie Joe Roberts
Odum—Willie Joe Roberts, 61, of Odum died as a result of an accident while working at Rayonier Advanced Materials on Aug. 27, 2017.
He was born April 20, 1957, to the late Willie and Eva Roberts in Jesup. He was employed by Rayonier for 41 years and was a member of New Life Ministries. He never met a stranger and was a friend to all and will forever be remembered for the kind-spirited person that he was, friends say. Roberts enjoyed college sports and spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by both parents, Willie and Eva Ford Roberts; a sister, Janie Roberts; and three brothers, Charles Roberts, Jackie Roberts and Roy Roberts.
He is survived by his loving wife whom he cherished, Velma Roberts of Odum; two daughters and a son-in-law, Lakeshia and Brandon Stalling of Radcliff and Kentucky and Alisha Roberts of Valdosta; a son, Robert Harris of Miami, Florida; six grandchildren, Haley, Tai, Vyshonn, Aliah, Ariana and Brandon Jr.; his siblings, David and Annie Roberts of Jesup, Delva Shields, Bennie Mae Brock, Rosezanna Roberts, Barbara Roberts and Daisy Roberts, all of Savannah; his mother-in-law, Lona Smith of Screven; his brother-in-law, Emery Smith of Marietta; sisters-in-law, Regina Smith of Jacksonville, Florida and Cathy Roberts of Washington, D.C.; a special friend, Gleneese Grimes; and a host of other in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A viewing will be held Friday at St. John Holiness Church, 386 W. Poplar St. in Jesup, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at New Bethel Life Changing Ministries, 521 Brown St. in Screven.
Interment will follow in Odum City Cemetery. Repast will be at Odum City Recreation Center, Odum.
