Ruth Johnson “Granny” Counts

Odum--Ruth Johnson “Granny” Counts, 90, of Odum died July 24, 2019, in the Appling County Pavilion Nursing Home after an extended illness.

The Wayne County native was a member of Old Bethel Baptist Church and attended Bethel Baptist Church in Blackshear. The homemaker enjoyed cooking, flower gardening and spending time with her family especially her grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Jack “Pat” Counts; parents, Gaulden and Zinnie Johnson; and a brother, Wilbur Johnson.

Survivors include two sons, Paul (Debra) Counts of Patterson and James Harold “Pansy” Counts of Blackshear; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary (Ed) Lynch of Jacksonville, Florida.

Funeral services were held July 26 at Old Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Jason Long, the Rev. Wayne Williamson and the Rev. Larry Harris officiating. Interment followed in the Old Bethel Cemetery. Active pallbearers were family and friends.

Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Betty Lou Sullivan Mager

Jesup--Betty Lou Sullivan Mager, 84, of Jesup died July 23, 2019.

The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, native was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed playing golf and bridge with the Pine Forest Ladies Golf Association.

She was the widow of Thomas O. Mager.

Survivors include three daughters, Denise Bittner and husband, Dr. Gregory Bittner, of Allison Park, Pennsylvania, Marcy Rosswog and husband, David, of Valencia, Pennsylvania, and Dr. Sandra Mager and husband, Andrew Wetherington, of Jesup; seven grandchildren, Jaclyn Bloom, Brian Rosswog, Tara Lucki, Robyn Turner, Dr. Michael Bittner, Drew and Dylan Wetherington; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial mass services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Adam Kasela officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service at the Jesup Train Depot from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of South Georgia, 1625 Sunset Blvd., Jesup, GA 31545.

Jesse Ray Boleman

Jesup—Jesse Ray Boleman, 79, of Jesup died July 20, 2019, at his residence after an extended illness.

He was born in Hartwell to Kermit Boleman and Gatha Brady Boleman. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Aline Anderson Boleman.

He was a maintenance supervisor for NES and enjoyed saltwater fishing and working.

Survivors include five sons and two daughters-in-law, Paul Boleman of Lakeland, Florida, Jesse and Sondra Boleman of Texas; Billy and Dawn Boleman of Jesup, Lee Boleman of Mississippi and Joe Boleman of Mississippi; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Ronnie Smith of Mississippi; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

There will be no services at this time.

Arrangements are with Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
