Elsie Mae Roberson Denison

Screven—Elsie Mae Roberson Denison, 93, of Screven died May 30, 2018, in Harborview Satilla Nursing Home in Waycross after an extended illness.

The Pierce County native had lived in Wayne County most of her adult life and was a member of Screven First Baptist Church, where she was active in her Ready Sunday School Class, teaching children’s Sunday school, singing in the choir and working in the church office.  She worked for Whitaker’s Pharmacy and volunteered as a pink lady at Wayne Memorial Hospital. The homemaker made many delicious meals and cakes and sewed many of her children and grandchildren’s clothes including her granddaughter’s wedding dress.

She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Alton Denison; a son, Ricky Denison; three sisters, Cora “Sister” Pierce, Eulice Parker and Bertie Mae Davis and six brothers, C.L. “Sink”, Russell, Alvin, Oliver, Lenton “Son” and Jim Roberson.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Shuman of Waycross; three grandchildren and their spouses, Gina Shuman of Valdosta, Sherri (Scott) Willis of Valdosta, Les (Dana) Shuman of Hortense; six great grandchildren;  a sister, Dean Ball of Waycross; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Screven First Baptist Church with Dr. Ron Wilcox and Dr. Brad Ellington officiating. Interment will be in the O’Quinn Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be her family. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Ready Sunday School Class.

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. prior to services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Screven First Baptist Church, 302 School Street, Screven, GA 31560.

Bertie Mae Roberson Davis

Jesup—Bertie Mae Roberson Davis, 90, of Jesup, died May 28, 2018, under the care of Heartland Hospice.

Funeral services were held June 1 at Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Josh Stafford and the Rev. John Brown officiating.  Interment was in Offerman City Cemetery.  

Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

 

Roy Andrew “Andy” Griffis Jr.

Jesup—Roy Andrew “Andy” Griffis Jr., 53, of Jesup died May 31, 2018.

Memorial services will be held by the family.

Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Vernelle Griffis Poore

Roswell—Vernelle Griffis Poore, 83, died May 7, 2018, at Roswell Nursing and Rehabilitation after a long illness.

She was born April 19, 1935, to the late Willie and Easter Long Griffis of Screven. She was raised in Screven and graduated from Patterson High School. She lived in Florida most of her adult life.

After a career in baking and raising a family, she returned to Screven, where she was a member of the First Methodist Church and also the Screven Garden Club. She enjoyed working in her lily garden at home.

She was predeceased by parents, Willie and Easter Long Griffis; sisters, infants Lula and AnnieLou and Joyce Griffis Johnson; and brothers, Lloyd, Floyd and Leon (Jake) Griffis.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and Charles Treadwell and Anfrea and John Hammett of Florida; three grandchildren, Isaac Treadwell and Abigail and Alex Hammett; a sister, Sheila Griffis Miller of Roswell; three sisters-in-law, Susan Maley Griffis, Deloris Griffis Carter and Barbara Griffis; and a host of beloved nieces and nephews and extended-family members.

She donated her body to the Emory University School of Medicine

A graveside memorial will be held at Big Creek Church in K’Ville at a later date.
