Dr. Lawrence R. Bennett

Jesup—Dr. Lawrence R. Bennett, 91, affectionately known as “Doc” or “Larry” died peacefully on Feb. 10, 2019, at Wayne Memorial Hospital under the care of Hospice of South Georgia and surrounded by his loving family.

A celebration of life will begin with a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Jesup with the Rev. Dee Shaffer and the Rev. Steve Larson officiating. A reception will follow immediately in the parish hall, and all are encouraged to attend.

Honorary pallbearers will be his caregivers, Doc’s Pool Ladies, members of St. Paul’s Adult Sunday School Class, the Jesup Kiwanis Club, Wayne County NAACP, Mental Health Association of America and Penny’s Bible Study Group.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 745 S. Palm St., Jesup, GA 31546; Wayne Counseling Center, 263 N. Karen Gilder

Jesup--Karen Gilder, 64, died Feb. 22, 2019, at home under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

She is survived by her husband, Rodney Gilder and numerous other family members.  Services will be private.

Charlie Lee Jackson

Jesup--Charlie Lee Jackson, 74, of Jesup died Feb. 22, 2019 at Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick.

A viewing will he held March 1 from noon to 5 p.m. at Royal Funeral Home Chapel

Funeral service will be held March 2 at Royal Funeral Home Chapel.

William F. “Bill” Miller III

Fernandina Beach, Florida—William F. “Bill” Miller III, 70, of Fernandina Beach, Florida, died Feb. 25, 2019, at Baptist Medical Center-Nassau.

He was born on May 10, 1948, in Atlanta to the late William Flynn Miller Jr. and Carolyn Morrison Miller. His family moved to Fernandina Beach when he was a baby, and he grew up there, graduating from Fernandina Beach High School in the class of 1966. He was always athletic and excelled at baseball, starting in high school. After graduation, he attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College; he then graduated from the University of Georgia with a bachelor’s degree in forestry. While at UGA, he lettered in baseball and was in the Sigma Chi fraternity.  

In 1972 he met the former Nancy Ritch in Jesup, and they married in 1973. His employment as a forester had the family residing all over the Southeast. For 33 years he worked for Union Camp Corporation and International Paper in various jobs, including regional manager in Alabama, South Carolina and Georgia. Most recently, he was the vice president of forest operations for F&W Forestry Services. He served as the president of the Georgia Forestry Association and also of the UGA Warnell Alumni Association and Big Jay Hook. He was a member of the Society of American Foresters and was elected SAFellow in 2012. He was inducted into the Georgia Foresters Hall of Fame in 2012. He was also in the Georgia Army National Guard.

In 2011 he and his wife returned to Fernandina Beach, where he enjoyed “semi-retirement” playing tennis and watching any and all sports, particularly Georgia Bulldog football. He was a member of the Kraft Tennis Club and the “Council Group” which consisted of gentlemen from “Old” Fernandina who would gather together every morning for coffee at the high school baseball field. He was an active member of First Baptist Church and the Joy Sunday School Class.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy R. Miller of Fernandina Beach, Florida; children, Carrie Miller Molinari and her husband, Steve, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, Katie Miller Bennett of Macon, and Flynn Miller IV and his wife, Brook, of Athens; grandchildren, Drew, Dean and Kate Molinari, Libby and Davey Bennett, and Wills and Doss Miller; sisters, Marilyn Miller of Jacksonville, Florida, Marcia Vincent of McDonough, Georgia, Jan (Bill) Henning of Oxford, Mississippi, and Julia (Mike) Burch of Jesup; a brother-in-law and his wife, Tom and Ashlyn Ritch of Rome; a sister-in-law and her husband, Anne and Mark Miller of Jesup; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 28 at First Baptist Church with pastor Zach Terry officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church an hour before the service. Burial will be in Bosque Bello Cemetery.
