Rev. John Cecil Currie

Screven—The Rev. John Cecil Currie, 91, of Screven died Oct. 2, 2018, in Wayne Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

The Wayne County native and U.S. Army veteran was a member of O’Quinn Baptist Church and began his church pastoral positions in 1963 and retired in 2010.

He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Christine Wimpey Currie.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Jo Ann and Robert Hagan of Statesboro and Brenda and Danny Sowell of Jesup.; two grandchildren, William and Katie Hagan of Hendersonville, North Carolina, and John and Rose Hagan of Altamonte Springs, Florida; a step-granddaughter, Jennifer (Gary) Sapp of Claxton; and four step-great-grandchildren, Molly Bradley, Jamie, Sara and Kaitlyn Sapp.

Funeral services were held Oct. 4 at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with the Rev. Vann Dempsey and the Rev. Gerald Greenlee officiating. Private family interment followed in O’Quinn Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Larry Wimpey, J.A. Beaver, Carlton James, Gary Ray, Mitch Beverly and Buddy Martin.

Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

 

James L. Yeomans

Jesup—James L. “Jimmy” Yeomans, 78, of Jesup died Oct. 2, 2018.

The Wayne County native was a member of Altamaha Baptist Church and a 26-year senior master sergeant with the U.S. Air Force. He received numerous citations and commendations including “Distinguished Graduate” with the Tactical Air Command, Vietnam Service Medal and the American Spirit Honor Medal. He was a bronze, silver and gold life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and former commander of the Leon Parrish Post No. 4583 in Jesup.

After a second career with the U.S. Postal Service, he loved spending time on the family farm, hunting and fishing.

Survivors include a daughter, Cyndi (Dale) Valentine of Lewiston, Idaho; two sisters, Zebe Schmitt of Port St. Joe, Florida, and Rebecca Yeomans of Darien; a granddaughter, Malysa (Jerry) Martinez of Denver, Colorado; and other extended family.

Graveside funeral services were held Oct. 5 at Altamaha Church Cemetery with the Rev. Jack Lee officiating along with the American Legion‚Äôs Post No. 311’s presentation of the U.S. flag. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Leon Parrish Post No. 4583 VFW.
