Robert Eugene Hamilton
Jesup—Robert Eugene Hamilton, affectionately known by his family and friends as Bob or Gene, 89, died Oct. 17, 2017, at Wayne Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
A resident of Jesup for nearly 50 years, he was born on May 4, 1928, in Pembroke to the late Curtis Lee and Sarah Wood Hamilton.
After high school graduation, he attended Brewton-Parker Junior College before enlisting in the United States Army, where he served as an information and education specialist and also a medical technician for Ryukus Command in Okinawa, Japan, eventually attaining the rank of sergeant.
After returning to the states, he continued his education at Mercer University and later attended Medical College of Georgia for three years. He worked as a chemist at Rayonier for many years, until his retirement in 1982, and was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church since his relocation to Jesup.
He was an avid outdoorsman who spent most of his time “in the woods” or “on the water” and was hunting and fishing until the very end of his life, killing his last deer at the age of 88. He was a charter member of the Tri-County Gun Club and had participated in countless skeet-shooting competitions. He enjoyed shooting and dearly loved teaching young people how to be responsible gun owners.
He was a former chairman of the Wayne County Republican Party and a past member of the Georgia State Republican Committee and served as president of the 8th Congressional District from 1966 to 1968.
He was a past master of Jesup Lodge No. 112 F&AM, a 33-degree Scottish Rite Mason, a former member of the Savannah Scottish Rite Consistory, a past president of the Bill Turner Scottish Rite Association in Jesup and a past chairman of the advisory committee of the Jesup Chapter of the Order of the DeMolay.
In addition to his parents, his two half-sisters, Carol Stuart and Sherril Hamilton Williams Carlsen, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his children and their spouses, Robert N. and Penni Hamilton of Watkinsville, Sherril and Bobby Costlow of Statesboro, Rick and MaryBeth Hamilton of Dahlonega and Bill Hamilton of Jesup; seven grandchildren, Laura, Allyson, Alexis, Orain, Madie, Bryce and Shannon; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
A memorial service will be held today (Saturday) at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Jesup with the Rev. Dee Shaffer and Deacon Marty Meuschke officiating. A reception will follow immediately in the church parish hall.
