Wayne County schools will be closed this week, beginning Tuesday.
Students were already out Monday for a teacher work day.
The school system had already planned to be closed next week and the following week, and spring break was already planned for the following week.
The Wayne County Board of Education made the decision at a called meeting Monday morning.
The Board plans to meet April 9 (the Thursday of the final week of the four-week break) to reassess the situation.
Plans are now being made to provide meals for students dependent on school lunches and to pursue possible distance learning for students.
According to School Superintendent Jay Brinson, his recommendation to close schools immediately was based on new recommendations from national health agencies regarding how best to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus causing COVID-19.
